UNBREAKABLE Blog Tour: Guest Post + Giveaway

Unbreakable-BT-Banner

I am totally psyched to be the final stop on the UNBREAKABLE Blog Tour and to be able to have the book’s amazing author, Elizabeth Norris, stop by and share a little bit about her writing process and the top ten songs she listened to while writing the Unraveling series.

As a newbie to this series – I’d only discovered UNRAVELING last fall – I am so excited to be a part of this tour and to have met her awesome characters – Janelle, Barclay, Ben, Alex, Elijah, Cecily, Struz, Janelle’s Dad and Jared. (Yes, I only listed the ones I was happy to meet. Sorry Reid!) And I’m so sad that this series has ended and that I won’t get to take another journey with them through the multiverse.

I could totally fall in love with interverse travel. Especially if I was stepping through the portals with someone like Interverse Agent Taylor Barclay. Yes, he’s awesome. If you haven’t yet met him, especially in UNBREAKABLE, be sure to check out Two Chicks on Books’ tour stop to learn just a little bit more about him.

I am a huge fan of this author and her series. And I have no idea how she writes at her “standing desk.” But clearly it works. Because this series is amazing! If you’d like to see what I thought of each of the books, here are my reviews – UNRAVELING, UNBREAKABLE.

But if you’d like to see what the author was listening to while she wrote those amazing, heartbreaking, swoon-worthy scenes, check out the guest post below. (Yes, I couldn’t resist embedding the YouTube videos.)

And if you haven’t yet entered the awesome giveaway that’s included as part of this tour, be sure to enter in the Rafflecopter which is just below that.

Unbreakable

About UNBREAKABLE

Four months after Ben disappeared through the portal to his home universe, Janelle believes she’ll never see him again. Her world is still devastated, but life is finally starting to resume some kind of normalcy. Until Interverse Agent Taylor Barclay shows up. Somebody from an alternate universe is running a human trafficking ring, kidnapping people and selling them on different Earths—and Ben is the prime suspect. Now his family has been imprisoned and will be executed if Ben doesn’t turn himself over within five days.

And when Janelle learns that someone she cares about—someone from her own world—has become one of the missing, she knows that she has to help Barclay, regardless of the danger. Now Janelle has five days to track down the real culprit. Five days to locate the missing people before they’re lost forever. Five days to reunite with the boy who stole her heart. But as the clues begin to add up, Janelle realizes that she’s in way over her head—and that she may not have known Ben as well as she thought. Can she uncover the truth before everyone she cares about is killed?

GUEST POST
On My Writing Process

I don’t need much to write. I can get pretty absorbed in what I’m doing and tune out everyone else—it’s a skill I’ve had since childhood. (My parents complained that I tuned them out quite a lot.)

Sometimes I’ll write in a notebook while I’m on the subway, or I’ve typed scenes into my iPhone, or I’ve managed to jot down notes or dialogue on the back of receipts or bills or random papers that were stuffed in my purse.

Obviously though, I do most of my writing on a computer (my editor is thankful for that).

I don’t have a desk, though. As a result, I’ve written chapters sitting on my couch or at my kitchen table, or at a coffee shop down the street. Recently though, I’ve turned my kitchen island into a standing desk.

I have a romantic picture saved to my desktop to get me in the mood.

I’ve gotten really attached to Scrivener in the last year after the fantastic Erin Bowman did a vlog explaining how it works. I especially love the outline feature, which helps me keep myself on task for a scene. (I have a tendency to wander and write much too long.) And I’m a huge fan of how many different things you can clip into the binder: pictures of characters, settings, inspirational images, etc. It all goes into the project.

But the number one thing I need most in order to write, in fact, I suppose the only thing I really need to write is music.

Here are the top ten songs that I listened to while writing the Unraveling series.

Top Ten Songs

10. “Set Fire to the Rain” by Adele. There’s a lot of different ways to interpret this song, but to me it’s about standing up and doing something impossible when you’re at your lowest point. And what else can I say? Adele could save the world with her voice alone. She’s amazing.

9. “With Every Heartbeat” by Robyn. This is a Ben/Janelle song. The title of the book is Unraveling because it’s really about Janelle unraveling a number of different mysteries and one of them is the mystery of Ben.

8. “Only if for a Night” by Florence + the Machine. I’m a huge Florence + the Machine fan, and I love the lines in this song: “You’re the only life/Only if for a night.”

7. “Untitled” by Simple Plan. This is a Ben song. For seven years prior to the books, there have been a lot of things that he blamed himself for and it just keeps getting worse.

6. “Stay With You” by Goo Goo Dolls. This song I listened to a lot (on repeat) when I wrote emotional scenes in the series. It’s another Ben/Janelle song.

5. “Blackout” by Breathe Carolina. This song is so upbeat and I played it a lot whenever I had to write something that was fast paced. It also made this chapter in Unbreakable happen: 03:11:05:00.

4. “Stay” by Rihanna featuring Mikky Ekko. This song wasn’t out until I was editing and writing Undone but it’s a definite Ben/Janelle. Especially in the very last scene of Unbreakable.

3. “All I Need” by Within Temptation. This Ben/Janelle song became my makeout song whenever I needed a makeout moment, I listened to this. Here’s why.

2. “Already Gone” by Kelly Clarkson. There’s a line in the beginning of this song, “We were always meant to say goodbye.” That’s sort of how I always envisioned Ben and Janelle—they have so much stacked up against them.  Plus, I love how heartbreaking this song is.

1. “We Are Broken” by Paramore. I’m a huge Paramore fan in general, but this is one of my favorite songs. I love the piano, the sort of haunting tone to the music, and of course I love Hayley Williams’ voice. But it’s the lyrics that really stuck with me while I was writing Unravelling. This is the song that inspired one of the big plot twists in the novel.
