The Vampire Diaries: The Return: Midnight by L.J. Smith will be released in the U.S. on March 15, 2011 in hardcover and eBook formats. It is currently available online for pre-order at Amazon and Barnes & Noble.
Published by Harper Teen the hardcover is 576 pages.
I have opted to spotlight this book’s release for so many reasons – but especially because I’m such a huge fan of this series, and have been for quite awhile, but also because it will be the last book in this series written by L.J. Smith and future books are rumored to be a significant departure from the direction and vision the author had for this series.
I don’t know of anyone who hasn’t heard of The Vampire Diaries even if they’re not the fan that I am. Obviously this book series, that started out in the 1990s, is now a hugely popular television show. And although the TV show differs fairly significantly from the books, I’ve managed to enjoy both equally, as the show isn’t just a poor imitation of the books.
The Return: Midnight will be the last full book written by author L.J. Smith. At one time (see Goodreads description #1) it may have been set to be the final book in the series, but there may be more books planned, written by a new author. And L.J. Smith’s website hints at a few other books.
This series, which has spanned the decades, has been the most elaborate and unique vampire series I’ve yet read. The world that L.J. Smith has created is both magical and terrifying – the horrors that have befallen many of the characters has been pretty gruesome and the ordeals they’ve had to face enormous.
If you have only seen the television shows just be prepared that the books are quite different. While the Elena Gilbert of the books isn’t the sweet and loving Elena from the television show, her chemistry with Damon is even more exciting in the books (if you can believe it). Of course now I cannot help but to picture Ian Sommerhalder as Damon as I read the books, although I still envision Elena as an icy blonde.
If you haven’t read this series, definitely start at the beginning, I don’t recommend bypassing the early books. You will get a chance to see a whole new Elena and meet Meredith, who is absent from the television show, but plays a large part in the books. And those pesky kitsune…
Shadow Souls was another dark and immensely harrowing journey for the characters, and I have been anxiously awaiting the release of Midnight to see what happens next.
With only a few weeks to go, I am on the edge of my seat waiting for this next, almost six hundred page, book in the series. And if the descriptions are accurate, I can’t wait to see just how Damon is going to handle this latest predicament.
Interestingly, Goodreads has two very revealing descriptions, so I’ve included both, below.
Goodreads description #1:
The vampire love triangle that spawned hundreds of thousands of fans-and inspired a hit television show-concludes in this powerful final volume of The Vampire Diaries.
In Midnight, golden girl Elena Gilbert is back from the Dark Dimension, having successfully freed her vampire boyfriend Stefan Salvatore from imprisonment. Saving Stefan had an unlikely consequence: his vampire brother Damon Salvatore has become a mortal. While the trio reels from this latest twist, they must still deal with the demons that have taken over Elena’s hometown, Fell’s Church.
As in every L.J. Smith novel, no matter how dark the night, there is always a happy ending. MIDNIGHT takes Elena, Stefan, and Damon to their darkest moments yet…Danger, romance, and paranormal mystery will keep readers fascinated with this captivating finale to the New York Times bestselling series.
Goodreads description #2:
The devil you know . . .
With the help of charming and devious Damon, Elena rescued her vampire love, Stefan, from the depths of the Dark Dimension. But neither brother returned unscathed.
Stefan is weak from his long imprisonment and needs more blood than Elena alone can give him, while a strange magic has turned Damon into ahuman. Savage and desperate, Damon will do anything to become a vampire again—even travel back to hell. But what will happen when he accidentally takes Bonnie with him?
Stefan and Elena hurry to rescue their innocent friend from the Dark Dimension, leaving Matt and Meredith to save their hometown from the dangerous spirits that have taken hold of Fell’s Church. One by one, children are succumbing to demonic designs. But Matt and Meredith soon discover that the source of the evil is darker—and closer—than they ever could have imagined. . . .
