Top 10 of 2016: Best Books I’ve Read in 2016

Welcome to Day One of the Top 10 of 2016

A WEEK OF LOOKING BACK…

…AND LOOKING FORWARD

I can’t believe that I’ve been co-hosting this event for six years with Jaime of Two Chicks on Books and three years with Nancy of Tales of the Ravenous Reader! And while I’m so sad that Mindy won’t be joining us this year, I’m thrilled that Bridget of Dark Faerie Tales has joined the team, as has Nancy’s blog partner, Christy.

I haven’t read a ton of books this year, or blogged very much, so I almost decided not to participate. But this event is so much fun that I just couldn’t miss out.

If you haven’t yet heard of the Top 10 of 2016 week-long event, in a nutshell it’s where we share our favorite bookish lists and invite you to share yours over the next five days by leaving your post links in the daily Linky Lists.

Yet again, we’re each hosting our own giveaways on four of the five days of this challenge – We’re taking Day One off, Dark Faerie Tales is hosting Day Two’s giveaway, I’ll be hosting Day Three’s giveaway, Two Chicks on Books is hosting Day Four’s giveaway, and Tales of the Ravenous Reader is hosting Day Five’s giveaway. So be sure to visit each of our blogs this week to share your post links and enter the giveaways!

The Best Books I’ve Read in 2016

While I haven’t read nearly as many books this year as last year – I still have so many, many must read books to read – I have read some pretty amazing books. And while choosing just ten was not at all easy, it was even harder figuring out the order…

In the tradition of Speak, this extraordinary debut novel shares the unforgettable story of a young woman as she struggles to find strength in the aftermath of an assault.

Eden was always good at being good. Starting high school didn’t change who she was. But the night her brother’s best friend rapes her, Eden’s world capsizes.

What was once simple, is now complex. What Eden once loved—who she once loved—she now hates. What she thought she knew to be true, is now lies. Nothing makes sense anymore, and she knows she’s supposed to tell someone what happened but she can’t. So she buries it instead. And she buries the way she used to be.

Told in four parts—freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior year—this provocative debut reveals the deep cuts of trauma. But it also demonstrates one young woman’s strength as she navigates the disappointment and unbearable pains of adolescence, of first love and first heartbreak, of friendships broken and rebuilt, and while learning to embrace a power of survival she never knew she had hidden within her heart.

Guest Post

Renée Ahdieh On Writing the eNovellas

What was it like to write the e-novellas before the release of THE ROSE AND THE DAGGER? Was it fun to imagine the different perspectives, and did it make you think of your characters in a different way?

I had such a wonderful time writing the e-novellas! Of course any chance to write a pivotal scene from Khalid’s perspective is just amazing, as he’s such a complex character to write. Like a boy who hides his entire inner world all his life. I was always particularly struck by what Khalid must have been thinking when he first met Shahrzad. That scene in the audience hall was from Shahrzad’s perspective in THE WRATH & THE DAWN, so we only ever get the briefest glimpse into what Khalid must have been thinking. It was insanely fun to switch things up in the e-novellas and explore his thoughts and feelings in these pivotal moments. Also the second e-novella from Khalid’s perspective fills in some important gaps—specifically his thoughts and feelings when he returns to discover Rey decimated and Shahrzad gone. The way in which he assumes blame for each of these things is both very telling of his character and important information for how he intends to handle everything in THE ROSE & THE DAGGER. I hope everyone loves the e-novellas as much as I enjoyed writing them!

I probably had the most fun putting together Despina and Jalal’s backstory. I’d always had an idea of what might have transpired between them, but to really get the chance to flesh it out and give them their own solid narrative was a terrific experience. Plus, Despina schools Jalal so hard, and it literally had me laughing out loud as I wrote it. The great thing about these two characters is that—despite their discrepancies from the perspective of society, as one is cousin to the king and the other is a servant—they are both so evenly matched. Neither is the type to bow to the wind. And when they first meet, both of them are seeking something that haven’t yet found—a person willing to see through the veneer. Because both these characters are something else beneath the surface.

Today’s topic is:

BEST BOOKS I’VE READ IN 2015

I’ve read so many seriously amazing books this year, that picking just ten was a dreadfully impossible task. I’m just glad I read THE STARS NEVER RISE by Rachel Vincent in 2014 or it would have made narrowing down my list that much more horrendous. It also didn’t help that I read more books this year than last, that I’ve been in an eclectic reading mood, and that there were just so many incredible books written.

#1 MENAGERIE by Rachel Vincent – AMAZON | BARNES & NOBLE | GOODREADS

Why? Because it’s unique, it’s hard-hitting, the writing is beautiful, the story is phenomenal, the series potential has me desperate for the next installment.

#2 DEAD OF WINTER by Kresley Cole – AMAZON | BARNES & NOBLE | GOODREADS

Why? Because this series is an all-time favorite, because the ending is abso-freaking-lutely killer, because it’s dark and gorgeous and the waiting is exquisite torture.

#3 SIX OF CROWS by Leigh Bardugo – AMAZON | BARNES & NOBLE | GOODREADS

Why? Because the story is epic, the world-building incredible, the writing gorgeous, the detail impeccable.

#4 TEN THOUSAND SKIES ABOVE YOU by Claudia Gray – AMAZON | BARNES & NOBLE | GOODREADS

Why? Because the writing is stunning, the world expansive and fascinating, the series riveting.

#5 BRUTAL YOUTH by Anthony Breznican – AMAZON | BARNES & NOBLE | GOODREADS

Why? Because it’s dark and gritty and edgy and shocking and disturbing, the writing brilliant, the story unforgettable.

#6 SCHISM by Jenna Black – AMAZON | BARNES & NOBLE | GOODREADS

Why? Because it’s complex and interesting and fascinating. The world is chilling and still amazing. The characters sympathetic and scary. The story compelling.

#7 AN EMBER IN THE ASHES by Sabaa Tahir – AMAZON | BARNES & NOBLE | GOODREADS

Why? Because it’s thrilling and epic and gripping and unputdownable. The dual POV makes it edge-of-your-seat exciting.

#8 THE ROSE SOCIETY by Marie Lu – AMAZON | BARNES & NOBLE | GOODREADS

Why? Because it’s so wicked and dark and wildly entertaining. It’s about villains. Nothing more needs to be said.

#9 ROOK by Sharon Cameron – AMAZON | BARNES & NOBLE | GOODREADS

Why? Because it’s action-packed, nerve-wracking, suspenseful. There are twists and turns. There’s romance, betrayal and heartbreak. What’s not to love?

#10 SALT & STONE by Victoria Scott – AMAZON | BARNES & NOBLE | GOODREADS

Why? Because it’s awesome and amazing and adorable and nail-biting. The characters are ones you can’t help but love, love, love. Though the possibility that there might not be a next book in the series is heartbreaking.

Stunningly gorgeous, devastatingly heartbreaking and beautifully written, THE WRATH & THE DAWN will transport you to a world of secrets, revenge, treachery, heartache, love and loss. A world ruled by a king, a monster, who takes a new bride each night and sacrifices her at dawn. A world where one girl is willing to risk her own life for the chance to end his tyranny and keep another family from suffering.

It’s a story that invites you to learn its secrets. It beguiles you with stories within the story. It keeps you on edge wondering when – when will Shahrzad strike, when will Khalid grow tired of her, when will it be her final dawn, when will Tariq attempt to save her – and asking why and how and what if – Why is Khalid executing his brides? How can he live with what he’s done? How can Shazi stand to spend one second in his presence? What if she fails? What if she succeeds? What if Tariq fails? And what if he succeeds?

Renée Ahdieh created a story that is exciting and enchanting, nail-biting and suspenseful. She brings together the most unlikely of characters, makes them fall in love, puts tremendous obstacles in their way, and gives them impossible odds. She expands her world by telling the story from multiple characters’ points of view. And she teases with the promise of what’s to come in future books in the series.

The author gives readers a strong female main character in Shahrzad. She’s quick, clever, brave, fierce and passionate and can be sharp-tongued and imperious. But she also has a vulnerability to her, and is kind and loyal and instantly likable. Khalid is also strong, which makes for an exhilarating dynamic between the two. He is a skilled swordsman, a seemingly ruthless leader, quick-tempered, arrogant, secretive and cold, but yet vulnerable, redeemable and fiercely protective.

THE WRATH & THE DAWN is an enticing and exquisitely told story. It combines action and romance and heartbreak and anguish into a tale that is positively epic. Not all questions will be answered. Not all plans will be revealed. Not all alliances will be forged. Not all threats will be eliminated. And not all dangers will have abated by the story’s end, setting the stage for an even more thrilling and nerve-wracking and potentially heartrending sequel.

If you’re looking for a story that is breathtaking and moving and absolutely amazing, Renée Ahdieh’s debut is a must.
