Title & Series: BLOOD ROSE REBELLION (Blood Rose Rebellion #1)
Author: Rosalyn Eves
Release date: March 28, 2017
Publisher: Knopf Books for Young Readers
Pages: 416
Formats: Hardcover, audio, eBook

The thrilling first book in a YA fantasy trilogy for fans of Red Queen. In a world where social prestige derives from a trifecta of blood, money, and magic, one girl has the ability to break the spell that holds the social order in place.

Sixteen-year-old Anna Arden is barred from society by a defect of blood. Though her family is part of the Luminate, powerful users of magic, she is Barren, unable to perform the simplest spells. Anna would do anything to belong. But her fate takes another course when, after inadvertently breaking her sister’s debutante spell—an important chance for a highborn young woman to show her prowess with magic—Anna finds herself exiled to her family’s once powerful but now crumbling native Hungary.

Her life might well be over.

In Hungary, Anna discovers that nothing is quite as it seems. Not the people around her, from her aloof cousin Noémi to the fierce and handsome Romani Gábor. Not the society she’s known all her life, for discontent with the Luminate is sweeping the land. And not her lack of magic. Isolated from the only world she cares about, Anna still can’t seem to stop herself from breaking spells.

As rebellion spreads across the region, Anna’s unique ability becomes the catalyst everyone is seeking. In the company of nobles, revolutionaries, and Romani, Anna must choose: deny her unique power and cling to the life she’s always wanted, or embrace her ability and change that world forever.

The Review

BLOOD ROSE REBELLION is gorgeously written, imaginative, and rich with detail. It acquaints readers with a part of history and a people not often written about in young adult literature. It seamlessly weaves in a powerful and influential magical society. And it introduces characters who are interesting and different and brave and likable and those who are vile, underhanded, dangerous, and untrustworthy. It is an absorbing and fascinating and positively exhilarating read and the start to a series that looks to be amazing.

Anna Arden didn’t mean to be such a destructive influence or such a disappointment to her family. She wanted to be good, to fit into Luminate society, to cast spells and wield magic, to debut, to have a future. But she didn’t have the ability to control magic and she just couldn’t seem to follow the rules, do as she was told, accept her fate.

Not staying under the radar cost her everything – the man she thought she loved, a place in England with her family, and any hope of marrying into Luminate society. Attracting the attention of the elite Circle wouldn’t have been a bad thing had she had magical abilities. But her negative effect on magic drew their suspicion.

Forced to escape with her grandmother to Hungary, a place she was unfamiliar with, to live with relatives she didn’t know and who spoke a language she couldn’t understand, seemed like the end of the world. But a Romani secret, a handsome boy named Gábor, a growing resistance to the status quo, and the potential to make a difference, gave Anna hope that maybe this wasn’t the end, but rather a beginning.

Rosalyn Eves did a masterful job of fitting her story, her characters, her society into a real-world historical setting. She captured the revolutionary spirit of the time in Hungary and the discontent with the ruling Hapsburgs and used both to help ignite her rebellion, give purpose to her characters, and to make her story that much more intriguing.

The author gave Anna a unique ability, kept it a secret from both her characters and her readers, and teased its possibilities until nearer the story’s end, ensuring a captivating read. She laid the foundation for a sequel with even more dangers, even more unrest, even more battles, and the potential for more romance. And she gave readers an epilogue that is certain to pique their curiosity.

BLOOD ROSE REBELLION is an extraordinary and spellbinding read. If you’re looking for a story that is epic, that blends fantasy with history, and that immerses you into the world Rosalyn Eves imagined so completely you’ll forget where and when you are, you will not want to miss this book and series.

THE WISH GRANTER Blog Tour: Review + Giveaway

Welcome to today’s stop on THE WISH GRANTER Blog Tour. As a huge fan of the author and her Ravenspire series, I am thrilled to be able to share my thoughts on this second book in the series.

For those who haven’t read the first book in this series, THE SHADOW QUEEN, not to worry, as THE WISH GRANTER introduces a new world and characters to fall in love with… or detest if it’s Alistair Teague we’re talking about. And while you may know who he is from that other fairytale, you will definitely want to see just how C.J. Redwine imagined him.

THE WISH GRANTER releases in just one week, so the wait is almost over! And let me tell you, it is sooooo worth the wait!

In the meantime, be sure to check out the other stops on the tour for more reviews and a few guest posts. And if you’d like the chance to win signed copies of both books in the series, be sure to check out the tour-wide giveaway.

Title & Series: THE WISH GRANTER (Ravenspire #2)
Author: C.J. Redwine
Release date: February 14, 2017
Publisher: Balzer + Bray
Pages: 432
Formats: Hardcover, audio, eBook

An epic, romantic, and action-packed fantasy inspired by the tale of Rumpelstiltskin, about a bastard princess who must take on an evil fae to save her brother’s soul, from C. J. Redwine, the New York Times bestselling author of The Shadow Queen. Perfect for fans of Graceling and the Lunar Chronicles.

The world has turned upside down for Thad and Ari Glavan, the bastard twins of Súndraille’s king. Their mother was murdered. The royal family died mysteriously. And now Thad sits on the throne of a kingdom whose streets are suddenly overrun with violence he can’t stop.

Growing up ignored by the nobility, Ari never wanted to be a proper princess. And when Thad suddenly starts training Ari to take his place, she realizes that her brother’s ascension to the throne wasn’t fate. It was the work of a Wish Granter named Alistair Teague who tricked Thad into wishing away both the safety of his people and his soul in exchange for the crown.

So Ari recruits the help of Thad’s enigmatic new weapons master, Sebastian Vaughn, to teach her how to fight Teague. With secret ties to Teague’s criminal empire, Sebastian might just hold the key to discovering Alistair’s weaknesses, saving Ari’s brother—and herself.

But Teague is ruthless and more than ready to destroy anyone who dares stand in his way—and now he has his sights set on the princess. And if Ari can’t outwit him, she’ll lose Sebastian, her brother…and her soul.

NOTE: This review is based on an eARC received from the publisher via Edelweiss in exchange for my honest thoughts about the book. A Kindle eCopy has been pre-ordered.

The Review

Once again C.J. Redwine has taken a well-known fairytale and turned it into an amazing adventure and an unforgettable and magical read. THE WISH GRANTER has all the elements of a classic fairytale – royalty, wickedness, greed, foolish choices, heroism, innocence, justice, and the hope for a happily ever after. But it offers so much more – action, suspense, a smart, strong, and immensely likable heroine, heartbreak, romance, faerie lore, depth of plot and characters, an expansive and interesting world, and a darkly appealing tone that sets the mood for this positively gripping and absolutely wonderful tale.

With the queen seeking to eliminate any possible threats to her son’s future rule, Thad had no idea how he could save himself, let alone protect his sister. So when he was given the chance to save her, he took it. Even if it meant sacrificing himself to do so.

But when Ari discovered the price he agreed to pay and the other costs he hadn’t been aware of, she was determined to find a way to release him from the contract. Though it wouldn’t be easy. Not when the Wish Granter had the only copy of the agreement. Not when Thad was taking dangerous risks to try and get out of the contract on his own. Not when she had nothing to bargain with. And not when she knew next to nothing about faeries and how they might be defeated.

A kingdom in turmoil, a prince at risk of losing his soul, a wily princess who refuses to conform to expectations, a weapons master who is reluctantly falling in love, and a very dangerous, greedy, and power hungry faerie looking to have it all, make for an epic, enthralling, imaginative, and exciting read.

C.J. Redwine infused her fairytale with more darkness, more tragedy, a more vile and wicked villain, a slew of despicable foes, and a more challenging puzzle to solve. But THE WISH GRANTER also promises more bravery, heart, ingenuity, hope, and love.

While based on the story of a not-so-beloved character, this second book in the Ravenspire series is an original with a heroine who is sure to be beloved. And it is a story that can be read and thoroughly enjoyed whether or not the first in the series has been read.

A dark epic fantasy inspired by the tale of Snow White, from C. J. Redwine, the author of the Defiance series. Perfect for fans of A Court of Thorns and Roses and Cinder.

Lorelai Diederich, crown princess and fugitive at large, has one mission: kill the wicked queen who took both the Ravenspire throne and the life of her father. To do that, Lorelai needs to use the one weapon she and Queen Irina have in common—magic. She’ll have to be stronger, faster, and more powerful than Irina, the most dangerous sorceress Ravenspire has ever seen.

In the neighboring kingdom of Eldr, when Prince Kol’s father and older brother are killed by an invading army of magic-wielding ogres, the second-born prince is suddenly given the responsibility of saving his kingdom. To do that, Kol needs magic of his own—and the only way to get it is to make a deal with the queen of Ravenspire, promise to become her personal huntsman—and bring her Lorelai’s heart.

But Lorelai is nothing like Kol expected—beautiful, fierce, and unstoppable—and despite dark magic, Lorelai is drawn in by the passionate and troubled king. Fighting to stay one step ahead of the dragon huntsman—who she likes far more than she should—Lorelai does everything in her power to ruin the wicked queen. But Irina isn’t going down without a fight, and her final move may cost the princess the one thing she still has left to lose.

Romance, intrigue, and plenty of action are woven into a rich and suspenseful narrative in this powerful YA fantasy.

The mixed-race heroine Myra is a Flickerkin and can flicker (become invisible) at will. She hasn’t cultivated or revealed this ability, since Flickerkin are persecuted as potential criminals and spies. When invisible people become tricksters and then murderers, Myra’s Flickerkin heritage becomes a deadly secret, putting her relationship with the leader’s son—and her own life—in jeopardy.

Loyalties shift and difficult choices are made before Myra understands who she wants to be.

Note: This review is based on an eARC I received by the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for my honest thoughts about the book.

The Review

FLICKER AND MIST surprised me in all the best ways. It is not just the story of a girl who has to keep her abilities secret to live the life she wants. It does not have a typical love triangle where the girl’s heart is torn in two. The love story does not overshadow the more important aspects of the book. The characters’ actions and decisions aren’t predictable. The heroine’s choices aren’t easy. Who’s right and who’s wrong isn’t so clear-cut.

Mary G. Thompson created a world with an interesting, if archaic, belief system that consisted of the people of the Left Eye and those of the Plateau. While currently at peace with one another, the Plats lived a very different life than the Lefties. The Plats had freedoms and opportunities the Lefties weren’t given. They were the rule-makers, the enforcers, the deciders.

They weren’t the ones that the Flicker Men mixed with all those years ago, leaving behind Flickerkin whose abilities were feared and who were forbidden from entering the Plateau. They weren’t the ones whose existence risked the wrath of the Waters.

Myra hated that she was different from all the other Plats. She envied their darker skin, their straighter hair, their height. Even though her father was on the Council, she could never really fit in. Not having inherited many of her physical characteristics from her mother, who was from the Left Eye. And not with the fear that she might reveal herself to be a Flickerkin.

Still, she hoped to someday inherit her father’s seat on the Council. She hoped to prove to all that she was the best female rider. She hoped that her friend Porti was right and that the Deputy’s son, Caster, liked her as much as she liked him.

But with the growing threat of the rising waters that could bring back the Flicker Men, the recent pranks that had everyone on edge that somehow those who could make themselves invisible had infiltrated the Plateau, and the very real possibility of discovery, Myra’s hopes seemed less and less likely to become reality.

A tumultuous past, civil unrest, fear, hatred, oppression, betrayal, bravery, love, honor, acceptance, strength, FLICKER AND MIST has it all. It introduces a unique world, tackles many real-life issues, gives much food for thought. It gives readers a strong heroine to connect with, puts many obstacles in her way, tests her values and beliefs, forces her to make difficult decisions, and asks her to trust those she has no reason to trust.

And with a number of unexpected reactions, choices, outcomes, a wondrous ability, tragedy, heartbreak, romance, plenty of action and the possibility of more to come, this is a story that is not to be missed.

A MILLION WORLDS WITH YOU Blog Tour: Excerpt + Giveaway

If you’ve been following the tour this week you should be all caught up with refreshers on the series and have read a bit about what can be expected in A MILLION WORLDS WITH YOU by Claudia Gray. Well, TODAY you get to read a seriously awesome excerpt that will leave you that much more anxious to find out what will happen in this third and final book in the series when it releases next week.

Yes, the wait is almost over – though if you ask me almost is not soon enough. I am dying to find out what happens next and how this series ends. Especially after reading about what happens to our Marguerite in the excerpt and hearing about what happened to another of the Marguerites.

I have no idea how far into the book what happens in the excerpt takes place, but I can guarantee that any fan of the series who reads it will be racing through however many pages there are to get to this scene and find out what happened just before and what will happen immediately after. That’s what I’ll be doing on Monday Midnight when my copy downloads to my Kindle.

There is a brief intro from the author giving a bit of context – though it’s really more of a tease for those desperately waiting for A MILLION WORLDS WITH YOU – along with the excerpt below the book’s details which immediately follow.

For those new to the series or unfamiliar with the very spectacular Claudia Gray, information on both are also below.

Title & Series: A MILLION WORLDS WITH YOU (Firebird #3)
Author: Claudia Gray
Release date: November 1, 2016
Publisher: HarperTeen
Pages: 432
Formats: Hardcover, audio, eBook

The fate of the multiverse rests in Marguerite’s hands in the final installment of the Firebird trilogy by New York Times bestselling author Claudia Gray.

Ever since she used the Firebird, her parent’s invention, to cross through alternate dimensions, Marguerite has been at the center of a cross-dimensional feud. Now she has learned that the evil Triad Corporation plans to destroy hundreds of universes, using their ultimate weapon: another dimension’s Marguerite who is wicked, psychologically twisted, and always one step ahead.

Even though her boyfriend Paul has always been at Marguerite’s side, the Triad’s last attack has left him a changed man, and he may never be the same again. Marguerite alone must stop Triad and prevent the destruction of the multiverse. It’s a battle of the Marguerites . . . and only one can win.

In the epic conclusion to the sweeping series that kicked off with A Thousand Pieces of You, fate and family will be questioned, loves will be won and lost, and the multiverse will be forever changed.

The Excerpt

With an intro from Claudia Gray…

Marguerite is racing through the universes, chasing after another, wickeder version of herself. Wicked’s goal is to kill as many Marguerites as possible, because that’s the only way to close that universe off to our Marguerite forever. But the deaths can’t be too quick—the wicked one needs to escape, and she’s hoping for our Marguerite to leap in at the perfect moment to be killed too.

When this excerpt begin, our Marguerite has just jumped away from one universe only to appear in what seems to be an endless void, unlike anything she’s ever experienced…

Something brushes against my cheek, and I startle. The hands I couldn’t sense a couple seconds ago automatically come to my face to check. Turns out my curls are floating around me as if I were underwater. Okay, body parts intact equals good, but what the hell is going on?

Metal begins to clank and whirr, the unmistakable sounds of machinery at work. Light filters in from behind me, dim at first, then brightening. Turning around is difficult; I have to writhe with my whole body to do it, and by now nausea has begun to wring my stomach. Finally I manage to get a look at what’s going on. Enormous plates are shuttering upwards as if being folded, and beyond them they reveal—

–Earth. As in, the whole planet. Which I am not currently on.

Outer space. You’re in outer space. Deep breaths. I can’t talk myself down. Oh my freaking God I’m in outer space! There’s no oxygen in space!

Of course there’s oxygen here—wherever this is—because I’m breathing. But for how long?

Never, ever have I liked heights. I’m not phobic or anything, but I’m one of the ones you have to tell not to look down no matter what. Now there’s nowhere to look but down.

Red lights begin to flash, and I hear a female computer voice say, “Warning. Plasma venting in four minutes.” A male computer voice says something else afterward in another language, one I can’t identify, because I’m facing my second life-or-death crisis in five minutes and this is the closest I’ve ever come to passing out from terror.

Pull it together! Nobody’s going to save me but me. Now that there’s enough light in this chamber, I can see tons of openings, most of them square and small, as well as a single, large, round one that looks like it might be some kind of door. Please, let that be a door; it’s the only chance I’ve got.

I try to move toward that opening, basically attempting to swim through whatever air is in here, but that doesn’t work. It leaves me simply flailing in space, barely moving forward at all. Quickly I scan the area being revealed around me, this section of whatever enormous machine contains me now. If I could touch one of the walls, I could pull myself along the surface until I reached what I really, truly, sincerely hope is a way out.

The closest one is beneath me, if “beneath” has any meaning up here. So I wriggle in that general direction, moving so slowly I want to scream.

“Three minutes to plasma venting,” intones the computer voice, with her male echo just after. Three minutes isn’t long enough—at least fifty feet separate me and that opening, and I don’t even think I’ll be able to touch the nearest surface before then.

Another voice echoes through the chamber. “Marguerite? What are you doing?”

“Mom!” Where is she? I can’t see her, but it doesn’t matter. She can see me. “Get me out of here!”

The metal plates stop moving. My vista on planet Earth gets no wider. The computer voice intones, “Plasma venting aborted.”

I should be happy. I should be cheering and laughing, especially now that a mechanical tow arm is unfolding from the wall to bring me in.

Instead, I want to cry.

I lost the Egyptverse Marguerite too. I had chances to save them and failed. And this time Theo was the one who did it—Theo

Will I be able to save anybody? How many Marguerites have to die?
