Book Watch: Releasing This Week #46

Nov 14

Below are the YA books coming out this week that I am spotlighting for my “Book Watch: Releasing This Week” post.

These are books for the week of November 15th-November 21st that I have pre-ordered.

***

Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi will be released in the U.S. on November 15, 2011 in hardcover and eBook formats. It is currently available to pre-order in both formats at Amazon and Barnes & Noble. [Note: Amazon has a special Kindle edition with audio/video.]

Published by HarperCollins, the print edition is 352 pages.

Shatter Me is one of the books that can be chosen for the 2011 Debut Author Challenge hosted by Kristi at TheStorySiren.com.

Shatter Me is the first book in a new series of the same name by the author.

I will try not to ramble too much about this book. I’ve already read it twice, reviewed it (HERE) and rambled on endlessly about this book on my other blog. I gave it my six star off-the-menu rating because this book is that amazing. And while I could probably talk about this book over and over and over again, it’s just better to read it and find out how truly gorgeous it really is for yourself.

The author’s writing is beautiful and brilliant and breathtaking. She made her character, Juliette, fragile and beautiful and broken, but still good, kind and with a hidden strength. This is a book that is not easily forgettable, not that you’d ever want to try.

The dystopian future if fairly grim, but not hopeless. The Reestablishment may have control, but they don’t have Juliette, although Warner hopes to change that. And then there’s Adam, who is nothing less than a hero.

I can’t wait for the eBook to download – I actually think I have two different versions pre-ordered. I also have a couple print copies headed my way. So, to say that I’m excited about this book’s release would be a slight understatement.

The Pledge by Kimberly Derting will be released in the U.S. on November 15, 2011 in hardcover and eBook formats. It is currently available to pre-order online at Amazon and Barnes & Noble in both formats.

Published by Margaret K. McElderry Books, a division of Simon & Schuster, the print edition is 336 pages.

The Pledge is the first book in a new series of the same name by author Kimberly Derting.

***

Once again this is one of my most anticipated releases of the month. I’ve been stalking The Pledge since its cover was first revealed. I’ve had it pre-ordered since the very first day it was available to pre-order for my Kindle and I can’t believe it releases on Tuesday.

As I already spotlighted it for my Book Watch post, I won’t talk too much more. But this dystopian novel by Kimberly Derting sounds exciting and dangerous and absolutely thrilling.

Charlie’s abilities sound like a gift and a curse and a world where language is what sets you apart is fascinating. I haven’t had a chance to read it early, but I plan on reading it when it downloads on my Kindle this week and I’m so excited to finally read this book.

The Future of Us by Jay Asher and Carolyn Mackler will be released in the U.S. on November 21, 2011 in hardcover and eBook formats. It is currently available to pre-order online in both formats at Amazon and Barnes & Noble.

Published by Razorbill, the print edition is 356 pages.

I received an early copy of The Future of Us from a charitable auction I participated in and won. I have just started reading it, but I have the eBook downloading to my Kindle on November 21st and can’t wait to add this to my permanent collection.

The premise of the story is what drew me in – a boy and girl in 1996 who get internet access, go online and are able to see themselves fifteen years in the future on Facebook. I also love the fact that the chapters alternate between the two characters so readers can see both points of view.

I am really curious to see just what the teenage characters in 1996 think of Facebook and the world as it exists in 2011. And I’m even more curious to see how the authors explore this.

Wherever You Go by Heather Davis will be released in the U.S. on November 15, 2011 in hardcover and eBook formats. It’s currently available online to pre-order in both formats at Amazon and Barnes & Noble.

Published by Harcourt Children’s Books, the print edition is 320 pages.

I received an ARC through a trade a few months back, but I knew I wouldn’t get to read it prior to release and so I gave it away to someone who could read it early. But I’m so glad to add this book to my permanent eBook collection this week.

I fell in cover, title and description love when I first saw this book. It’s a story that seems just so heartbreakingly sad. The story is told from three different perspectives – Holly, Jason and Rob – and is one of love, loss and moving on.

It’s the story of a boy, Rob, who died in an accident and instead of moving on, becomes a ghost who watches over his girlfriend, Holly, and sees her and his best friend Jason growing closer. When Holly realizes that Rob may be trying to communicate with her through her grandfather, she is faced with the difficult task of helping Rob let go.

There is an amazing book releasing today, November 14, 2011, that I forgot to include in my post last week. It may be too late to pre-order it, but it is available to order online or pick up in stores right now.

It has already downloaded to my Kindle and I’m excited to have it in my permanent collection.

The Space Between by Brenna Yovanoff releases today, November 14, 2011 in the U.S.

Find it here: AmazonBarnes & Noble

***

This week I have four books pre-ordered (not including The Space Between which should have been included with last week’s orders). As I’ve already read Shatter Me, twice, it’s not technically getting added to my reading pile, and I hope to have The Future of Us read prior to its release.

Two new adds aren’t so bad, and I plan on reading The Pledge hopefully later this week, so that’s only one book added to my extra long list of books to be read.

I am excited to read The Space Between, but it’s just a bit further down in the pile and I hope to get to it early next year.

As always, I would love to hear what you’re hoping to add to your collection this week!

And if you have any great suggestions of “must read” books to buy that are releasing this week, please let me know!

My Reading Pile #34

Nov 05

This week was a really, really, really, really great week for books. In large part because of Jaime from Two Chicks On Books.

While some of the books (as always) that I was expecting didn’t show up, I’m thinking that’s mainly due to the fact that it’s been raining and my mailman hates to deliver the mail when it rains. I’m hoping a few of those books will show up in today’s mail, but I have quite a few books to talk about so I’ll save any of today’s deliveries for next week’s post.

Since I did get a TON of lovely things worth talking about in my mailbox this week, I am giving credit to Kristi at The Story Siren who came up with the idea of sharing what’s in her mailbox each week.

I didn’t just get books in the mail this week, so I didn’t create a pile for the pics, and because there were so many, I’ve separated them into a few pics.

“Pile” One is from Jaime (mentioned and linked above) of Two Chicks On Books.

In addition to quite a few amazing ARCs she picked up at a conference she attended last week, she sent me lovely signed and unsigned swag. Not shown are two posters for The Hunger Games which are really cool.

She also sent that lovely Silence book jacket, which I apparently photographed backwards, because on the other side there’s a picture of Nora and Patch and it’s signed by the author. There are some buttons and magnets and bookmarks, but the most amazing thing is the flyer for the Smart Chicks tour which has so many signatures. I nearly fainted when I saw it!

And then there are the ARCs. I knew that she was grabbing me a couple, but I didn’t know there would be five – yes, that’s right, five – ARCs. So, just in case it’s not obvious from that photo of awesome, Jaime sent me…

A Million Suns by Beth Revis, the sequel to Across the Universe, Fever by Lauren DeStefano, which I have been dying to read, Revived by Cat Patrick, which I hadn’t heard about but looks so amazingly awesome, Under the Never Sky by Veronica Rossi, which I’ve heard such incredible things about, but hadn’t yet requested and now I don’t have to! And finally Born Wicked by Jessica Spotswood, which I had actually just requested from the publisher but never expected to receive.

I can’t thank you enough Jaime, I will have to pay you back somehow and I think I have an idea of just how to do it.

Of course, that wasn’t all that showed up this week.

I had been one of the winners for the daily If I Die giveaway from the Kismet Book Tour the other month. I can’t tell you how excited I was to win two copies of If I Die. Well, three books showed up this week from Harlequin TEEN. The two copies of If I Die are unsigned, but the copy of My Soul to Steal is. Sadly, the post office bent the cover a little bit, but it’s still gorgeous.

And, of course, I mailed off the copies of If I Die to the author to be signed, because Rachel Vincent is so amazing and she’ll do that if you send a S.A.S.E.

But I also got about twenty signed Shadow Bound postcards in the mail. The author was doing blogger giveaways for these on Twitter, and for the U.S. group of ten, I was lucky number nine. I just made it. Talk about perfect timing.

And last, but definitely not least, is a beautiful signed copy of Smokeless Fire by author Samantha Young. I love the cover of this first book in her newest series, Fire Spirits, which I read and reviewed here on the blog. It was designed by Phat Puppy Art, an amazing artist, whose site I now stalk regularly.

I decided not to share the inscription, as it’s personally signed and I always feel weird about posting those messages here on the blog.

Anyway enough about the books I received…

Here are the books I have in my reading pile this week.

(November 6-November 12, 2011)

***

First up is The Pledge by Kimberly Derting. I have an eARC of this book from Simon & Schuster’s Galley Grab program and I am going to try really hard to get to it this week, but I’m quite behind on my reads.

I have wanted to read this book forever. I think I mentioned that, repeatedly, in my Book Watch post and to anyone who would listen on Twitter. The second the author revealed the cover I created a widget and have been watching it count down ever since. That was hundreds of days ago. Of course I just noticed the sort of watermarked letters spelling out “PLEDGE” which I had never seen before. Really cool.

I can’t wait to finally find out more about this dystopian novel by the author. I haven’t read her other series, The Body Finder, but I have a couple of those books signed and they’re also on my Kindle just waiting to be read. I love the idea that language plays such an important role in Ludania, that it’s language that determines what class you’re in, and that knowing as many languages as she does could be really dangerous for Charlie.

While I can’t always connect with dystopian novels, this one sounds like one of those that I will just love and I can’t wait to read it this week and find out.

Dark Beauty by Taryn Browning is next up on the pile. I received a request from the author for a review of her full-length book Dark Seeker and she sent that to me along with this short story prequel.

It was a quick glance at the reviews of this short book, from reviewers I trust, that made me accept Dark Seeker for review and also made me want to add this series to the pile. But it was the fact that it sounds action-packed and really cool that sealed the deal for me.

While it wasn’t necessary for me to read Dark Beauty in order to review the full-length book, I’d heard such great things about it, that I wanted to read and review it, too. I also prefer to read books in the order they’re released and since this came out first, it’s first up on my list.

If I like it as much as I think I will, I’ll be adding Dark Seeker to the pile next week.

Last up is The Future of Us by Jay Asher and Carolyn Mackler. This is a “Back on the Pile” ARC that I had won in a charitable auction and I’ve been just dying to read it ever since it arrived.

I can’t wait to meet Emma and Josh and see what discovering a site like Facebook in 1996 is like. Especially when it gives them a peek into their future. And I have skimmed through a few of the pages throughout the book to get a feel for both authors’ writing and I think it will be really easy to get caught up in this story.

I will not let release date come and go without having read it, so although I didn’t get to read it when it was first on the pile four weeks ago, this time I’m determined and so it’s back on the pile this week.

Wishful Thinking reads:

I have one wishful thinking read for a book I don’t even own. I know that ARCs have been mailed, but I haven’t received one. I’m not certain I’m even on the list. But this section is for my wishful thinking reads, so I don’t have to actually own the book to wish to read it.

Well, my wishful thinking read is A Touch Morbid by Leah Clifford. I am, and have been for months, d.y.i.n.g. to read this book. Just DYING to read it. I have read A Touch Mortal more times than is probably healthy and more times than I’ll admit to in this post. I will just say that if I counted my re-reads toward my total reads for 2011, I’d be a LOT closer to my goal this year.

Anyway, I loved that book and have been looking for hidden meaning in its pages to try and keep me occupied until I get my hands on A Touch Morbid.

Those left behind:

Once again, I am completely behind on last week’s reads. I didn’t start them. I’ve barely read anything this past week. Why? Because of NaNoWriMo mostly. Also, for some reason blogging has been taking up more time than usual and yet I feel like I’ve actually produced less content. Go figure.

I did finish Where You Are by Tammara Webber that I started the previous week, but I didn’t even get started on Halo or Hades. And I don’t know that I’m going to get to them this week. I have a few “must review” books coming up this month, so these two might have to take a back seat until December. And, on top of everything else, I want to try and sneak in an audio book review this week, too.

***

I ended up requesting just one more book this week from the publisher. But it technically wasn’t a new request, since I’d previously requested it and was concerned it might have gotten lost in the shuffle.

And thanks to Jaime, I don’t have to take any further risks of rejection since she sent me so many of the ARCs I’ve been dying to read. I think the only missing books that I won’t even bother requesting are Clockwork Prince, Bloodrose and Pandemonium. They’re just way too popular for me to think I’d be considered for an ARC.

But I have more than enough on the pile to keep me reading well through March at this rate and I really want to start reading a few adult PNR/UF books from my favorite YA authors in 2012.

Do you create a reading pile?

If so, what’s in your pile this week?

The Extras: October & November

Nov 04

Yes we’re back with this month’s and last month’s “Extras” post. As some of you may already know…

Whenever I find either a legal free download, an excerpt or sneak peek of a book online, I try to link to it in a related post or include the link in my sidebar (to your right).

But once a month I’ll pop them into a post for a “one-stop shop” with a brief description. You may have previously seen some of these in my sidebar and one or two may still be lingering, well here they are once more in case you missed them. (My sidebar tends to have a LOT of info.)

We have a few peeks at upcoming releases, just released books and some of them are just items that have been offered for free for awhile but you might have missed.

***

I know I’m a month late with this post, so I’m doing one LONG post combining this month and last month, but better late than never. Especially for free stuff!

November Peeks

Kiss of Frost by Jennifer Estep will be released in the U.S. on November 29, 2011.

Kiss of Frost is the second full-length book in the Mythos Academy series by the author. Dark Frost, the third book in the series, is slated for release in 2012.

This sounds like an exciting series. Gwen Frost is a warrior-in-training at Mythos Academy, a school for “myths, magic and warrior whiz kids.” In this sequel, Gwen is in her second year and there is a new mystery or two to solve. It seems two people – an invisible archer and a Reaper – want Gwen dead. And she’ll have to team up with Logan Quinn in order to figure out how to stop them and hopefully survive.

To get a peek at Chapter One from the author’s website, CLICK HERE.

Legend by Marie Lu will be released in the U.S. on November 29, 2011.

Legend is the first book in a new dystopian series by the debut author, set in a militaristic nation, now occupying the western portion of the United States.

The story revolves around June, who is from a well-to-do family, and Day, who is not. Day becomes the suspect in June’s brother’s murder and she is seeking vengeance against his killer. With a description that promises “nonstop action, suspense, and romance,” Legend looks to be an exciting read.

Unleashed by Nancy Holder and Debbie Viguie will be released in the U.S. on November 22, 2011.

Unleashed is the first book in the new Wolf Springs Chronicles by the authors.

This new series sounds absolutely intriguing. Katelyn McBride is sent to live in the small town of Wolf Springs, nestled in the Ozarks of Arkansas. The town’s secrets are centuries-old and “sinister” according to the description and Katelyn is the catalyst for some sort of change – for good or bad we do not know.

The Future of Us by Jay Asher and Carolyn Mackler will be released in the U.S. on November 15, 2011.

The premise of The Future of Us is absolutely fascinating. This story takes readers to back 1996 when fewer than half of high schoolers in the U.S. had used the Internet. Emma gets her first computer and she and her best friend Josh log on to find themselves on Facebook in 2011. Like the title says, they get a glimpse at their future selves and it will be exciting to see what it holds for these two characters.

The authors wrote alternating chapters, according to Carolyn Mackler’s website. She wrote Emma’s first draft and he wrote Josh’s. Then they swapped and edited each other’s work. It sounds like an exciting concept where two different voices are made cohesive through the editorial process and I’m excited to see just how well it all comes together.

Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi will be released in the U.S. on November 15, 2011.

Shatter Me is the first book in a new dystopian/paranormal series by debut author Tahereh Mafi.

I normally give a little summary based on the Goodreads description for each book. But I’ve read Shatter Me and I loved, loved, loved it, so I first have to say, just read the excerpt. You won’t be disappointed. This book is written so unbelievably beautifully. Any description won’t do it justice.

If you must know the basics and believe me, they don’t even touch on the amazing-ness of this book, Shatter Me is being called a dystopian novel with a paranormal twist. The Reestablishment has imprisoned Juliette for murder. Her touch is lethal and because of that she’s been in isolation for a very long time. After being in captivity for so long, without any human contact, they decide that her deadly touch could be an asset. She could be their weapon. And Shatter Me is Juliette’s story.

To get a sneak peek at chapter one on the book’s Facebook page, CLICK HERE.

The Pledge by Kimberly Derting will be released in the U.S. on November 15, 2011.

The Pledge is a dystopian novel set in Ludania, a violent country where language determines class. The main character Charlaina has the ability to understand all languages, which in Ludania can be very dangerous. And from the description, life in Ludania is harsh and its citizens are fearful, but Charlie seems to be the key to ousting the “oppressive” leadership and changing things for everyone.

The Ripper: The Vampire Diaries: Stefan’s Diaries by Kevin Williamson and Julie Plec, based on L.J. Smith’s The Vampire Diaries novel and the CW’s The Vampire Diaries television show, will be released in the U.S. on November 8, 2011.

The Ripper is the fourth volume of Stefan’s Diaries and interestingly, its release corresponds to the appearance of Stefan as “The Ripper” on this season’s show, although this book is about the original serial killer, Jack the Ripper.

This installment takes readers to London in 1888 where Stefan is drawn to the investigation that follows Jack the Ripper, the famous serial killer, and Stefan thinks the killer is a vampire and someone he knows.

Prized by Caragh M. O’Brien will be released in the U.S. on November 8, 2011.

Prized is the second book in the Birthmarked series by the author. Birthmarked was the author’s debut novel.

The second book in this dystopian series follows sixteen-year-old Gaia Stone as she leaves the Enclave and heads out into the wasteland. She’s is captured by another society, where the women outnumber the men, whose rules state that kissing is a crime. And from the description it seems that in order to be reunited with her sister, she must follow their rules and not her heart.

November Peeks: Already Released

Tiger’s Voyage by Colleen Houck was released in the U.S. on November 1, 2011.

Tiger’s Voyage is the third book in the Tiger’s Curse series by the author. Tiger’s Destiny, the fourth book in the series, and Tiger’s Dream, the fifth book, are both scheduled for release in 2012.

As I haven’t yet read this series, but own the first two books, I’ve been trying to avoid the Goodreads description for this book. But I did get a glimpse. And it seems that this book will bring Kelsey and the tiger princes closer to breaking the curse.

To get a long look inside at the first four chapters from the series website, CLICK HERE.

Reckoning by Lili St. Crow was released in the U.S. on November 1, 2011.

Reckoning is the fifth and final book in the Strange Angels series by the author.

Strange Angels is a favorite series that I’ve fallen quite behind on, so I absolutely will not look at its description on Goodreads. But I know that the first two books in this series, which follows Dru Anderson, a girl with “the touch” who has to constantly battle to survive, were incredibly exciting.

To get a preview at the first chapter of Reckoning, CLICK HERE.

Crossed by Ally Condie was released in the U.S. on November 1, 2011.

Crossed is the second book in the Matched trilogy by the author. The third book, slated for release next year, is currently untitled.

I have yet to read Matched, but it is in my collection. In this installment, Cassia journeys to the Outer Providences to find Ky and according to the description, she still hasn’t decided about a future with Ky or one with Xander. It also promises that twists and turns can be expected for this sequel in a series I can’t wait to devour.

To read an excerpt of the first two chapters of Crossed from EW’s Shelf Life,CLICK HERE.

Last Breath by Rachel Caine was released in the U.S. on November 1, 2011.

Last Breath is the eleventh book in the Morganville Vampires series by Rachel Caine. The twelfth book, Black Dawn, will be released in 2012.

In this installment, there are three missing vampires and a new arrival in town named Magnus. Claire Danvers is certain that he he isn’t human, but she’s not sure just what he is. Could there be a new paranormal in Morganville?

Last Breath has already been released, but for those who don’t have it quite yet, but don’t want to wait, CLICK HERE for an excerpt from Penguin’s website.

Dark Eden by Patrick Carman was released in the U.S. on November 1, 2011.

A sequel, Eve of Destruction, is slated for release on April 24, 2012.

Seven teens are sent to Fort Eden in a last-ditch attempt to overcome their fears. But while Fort Eden may hold the cure, the price might not be worth paying. And with an unusual twist at the end about just what’s really going on at Fort Eden and a complete multimedia experience to supplement the story, this is definitely worth checking out.

I have only read a few of the above October and November releases. That’s just how far behind I am with my reading. And I haven’t checked out any of the excerpts.

But I do own most of the books in the above list or have them pre-ordered, so I hope to get to them soon.

I know I’ve missed quite a few Amazon freebie downloads in this post, but if they’re still available when I do my December Extras post in a few weeks, I’ll add them to that, much shorter list.

I hope there are a few excerpts for books that you might enjoy. Happy freebie reading!

My Reading Pile #30

This week’s mailbox was a little slower, though I think it was mostly due to bad weather and a mailman who didn’t show up on one or two days. As always, I have a feeling that Saturday’s mail delivery will be full of surprises.

But I got some really great books this week, and since I did, I would like to give credit to Kristi at The Story Siren who came up with the idea of sharing what’s in her mailbox each week.

Earlier this week I got an ARC of Away by Teri Hall from Aly of Kid Lit Frenzy! as part of an event she’s putting together. I’ve got The Line on the pile for this week, so I’m super excited to read Away next week.

I also just received the three books in the River of Time series by author Lisa T. Bergren – Waterfall, Cascade and Torrent - and they’re signed, with three lovely signed bookmarks, too. I won them in a giveaway the author had for bloggers over the summer/early fall.

As I own all the books in eBook format, she said she’d send them to me signed so that I can give them away here on the blog, which I will do later this week or early next week. Sadly, Mr. Postman banged up the back corner of Cascade just a little bit, but I’m hoping that by keeping them in the stack, it will unbend a little.

I am still waiting on those books I bid on and won from a charitable auction in June, but as the woman behind the event has stopped returning my emails, I think I’ll never see those books.

I am unbelievably thrilled with the books I got this week, and am slightly happy that I have no new adds to this week’s pile, but I do have a pile and so…

Here are the books I have in my reading pile this week.

(October 9-October 15, 2011)

First up is The Future of Us by Jay Asher and Carolyn Mackler. I received this ARC from a charitable auction and as soon as I read the description I was dying to read it.

I love the idea that it’s set in 1996 and that the characters will be getting a look into the future, our present. I’m so curious to find out what the authors do with this – how will the teens of the ’90s react to the world of 2011? Will it seem so unrealistic or will it seem like a very real, very possible future? Will they believe what they’re seeing?

And I am especially curious to see what they’ll think of Facebook, from a 1990s perspective. I’m so glad to have received an early copy and I can’t wait to start reading it this week.

Next up is The Line by Teri Hall. I’ve owned this in eBook format since it was released. And it’s been on my TBR list for some time, I just wasn’t able to move it up to the top of the pile until now.

The world intrigues me. A future where the United States is sealed off and where a line separates part of the country from its enemies on the other side. And even though it’s dangerous, there are some who are willing to live near the Line, including the main character Rachel’s family.

I can’t wait to find out who from across the Line in Away sent the recorded message that Rachel discovered and what it all means.

Now that Away is released, I’m more curious than ever to find out about this world so that I can dive into Away to see just what exists on the other side of the Line.

Wishful Thinking reads:

Solitary is my wishful thinking read this week. I actually downloaded it the second I finished Lockdown because I couldn’t stand being left on that cliff and had to know what happened. I did end up reading a few pages, but stopped as I had to get back to the books on the pile, but I would love to be able to just keep reading this series.

It’s so dark and gruesome, and the action and fear of capture make this an extremely riveting series, which I really didn’t expect. So, I find myself drawn to Solitary, but am keeping it as a wishful thinking read as I really shouldn’t be reading it this week.

Those left behind:

I’m almost done with Shatter Me, so I’m not really behind on last week’s pile. But I have a few books that are still TBR from much earlier piles. I hope to catch up on those in the coming weeks.

I was also made aware of a book that had been promised a review from quite some time ago which was lost in the shuffle. I will be reviewing that this month here, or on my other blog, but that is definitely one book that can certainly be considered “left behind.”

I fell a little behind this week because I got the chance to beta read the upcoming novella in the Soul Screamers series. Which I did end up reading twice. Because you never really get a good read going when you beta read.

I can’t complain about falling behind because of it, as it was just the best thing ever to have read this book so super early. I loved it both times I read it, so I don’t even care that I’m behind on my posts, writing up my reviews or being completely sleep deprived. Once in a lifetime experience? You bet.
