addtogoodreads

DIE FOR HER by Amy Plum was released in the U.S. on April 2, 2013 in eBook format only. It is currently available to order online at AMAZON and BARNES & NOBLE.

Published by HarperTeen, the story is 6o pages.

DIE FOR HER is a novella in the author’s Die for Me series set between UNTIL I DIE and IF I SHOULD DIE.

Line_001

Description…

Set in the romantic and death-defying world of the international bestselling Die for Me trilogy, this digital original novella follows Jules, a brooding, immortal French artist who has fallen in love with his best friend’s girlfriend.

Jules Marchenoir is a revenant-an undead being whose fate forces him to sacrifice himself over and over again to save human lives. He’s spent the better part of the last century flirting his way through Paris, but when he met Kate Mercier, the heroine from Amy Plum’s Die for Me trilogy, he knew his afterlife had changed forever and he had found the love of his life. Until Kate fell for his best friend, Vincent. Now Jules is faced with an impossible decision: choosing between his loyal friend and a love truly worth dying for.

Line_001

DIE FOR HER is a wildly entertaining and incredibly revealing novella in author Amy Plum’s Die for Me series told from Jules’ perspective. Released between books two and three, this short story takes a look at events from the first two books in the series from his POV and concludes at the same point in the story as UNTIL I DIE.

As it does parallel the story as told from Kate’s point of view, this novella should not be read prior to having read both previously released books. And as it reveals certain things that were hinted at in that second book, and which will likely come to light in IF I SHOULD DIE, it is best read prior to reading that third and final book in the series.

Jules is one of the author’s more charismatic characters. His charming and flirtatious behavior serve to make him one of the more likable characters in this series, even if at first glance he appears to be a bit shallow. But in this novella, readers will get to see a different side of Jules and will learn that there is more to him than what meets the eye.

This novella also gives readers an expanded look at the world as well as a look at it from an alternate viewpoint. It offers a quick look at events that couldn’t be explored from Kate’s perspective, insight into events where her POV may not have been the most accurate, and an eye-opening peek at scenes involving both Kate and Jules.

DIE FOR HER is not only a riveting read but a heartbreaking one. For fans of the series, and especially Jules, this story is not one to be missed. And for those readers who may not have picked up on the hints in UNTIL I DIE, reading this novella will make them want to go back for a second look.

As it doesn’t cover new ground or bridge a gap between novels, it’s not mandatory to read DIE FOR HER to complete the series. But for those readers who like to take a longer look at the world or who like to see another character’s views on what has transpired, this novella is a must.

And as it includes a short excerpt of chapter one from IF I SHOULD DIE, readers will get to continue the story right to the edge of a small cliff.

On a personal note…

Jules is my favorite male character in this series. While Vincent may have held the top spot in DIE FOR ME, I’ve always been fond of his ever flirty best friend Jules. But after having read UNTIL I DIE, Vincent was out and Jules was in.

So I was totally thrilled to be able to read this short novella from his perspective. And I was even more thrilled to find out that what I thought was going on with Jules wasn’t just  wishful thinking.

As a fan of this character, I couldn’t help but fall instantly in love with this story. It made me grin, it tore my heart out and it made me want to read an entire novel from his point of view. It also made me happy that I was right to adore him, that he wasn’t just a flirt, that he was so much more.

And I am so glad I read this before reading IF I SHOULD DIE. I would have been wondering if my suspicions were correct for the entire read until all was revealed. And not knowing Jules’ thoughts would have made for a completely different reading experience of that last book.

I don’t usually get all swoon-y over a novella. And I almost never fall madly in love with one. But it couldn’t be helped. This story was all sorts of awesome.

Quickie Review: Radiant

Radiant

addtogoodreads

RADIANT by Cynthia Hand was released in the U.S. on December 4, 2012 in eBook format only. It is currently available to order online at AMAZON and BARNES & NOBLE.

Published by HarperTeen, the story is 69 pages.

RADIANT is a novella in the author’s Unearthly series set between HALLOWED and BOUNDLESS.

Line_001

Description…

From New York Times bestselling author Cynthia Hand comes a riveting original novella (available only as an ebook) set in the world of the Unearthly series.

Clara is desperate to get away—from the memories that haunt her in Wyoming and the visions of a future she isn’t ready to face—and spending the summer in Italy with her best friend, Angela, should be the perfect escape. . . .

For as long as she can remember, Angela has been told that love is dangerous, that she must always guard her heart. But when she met a mysterious guy in Italy two years ago she was determined to be with him, no matter the costs. Now she must decide whether she can trust Clara with her secret, or if telling her the truth will risk everything she cares about.

Alternating between Angela and Clara’s perspectives, Radiant chronicles the unforgettable summer that will test the bounds of their friendship and change their lives forever.

Line_001

RADIANT is a short novella that alternates between Clara and Angela’s points of view. Set in the summer between the events that took place in HALLOWED, the second book in the series, and those in BOUNDLESS, the final book, this story takes readers to Italy where they’ll learn just a little bit more about the mysterious boy from Angela’s past.

And because of the dual perspectives, readers will get to know Angela a little bit better, from her insecurities to her wariness about falling in love.

Even though RADIANT includes Clara’s point of view, it is Angela’s story and it is a bit of a love story. It reveals some weaknesses in Angela’s character as well as some of her vulnerabilities, developing her into someone who is more than a little bit selfish but also rather sympathetic.

A new character is introduced in this novella. Someone who this story makes clear will have a rather significant role to play in the final book in the series. Their presence and the questions they raise about events to come add mystery and suspense, making for an incredibly engaging read.

RADIANT leaves readers on the edge of a cliff with its parting line. And for those that haven’t yet read the final book in the series, they’ll want to dive right in to find out just what that one decision means for the story. For those that have, it will reveal the possibility of a very different outcome had a different decision been made.

While this series can be enjoyed without having read this novella, getting more insight into another character from the series and getting the chance to see just how different things might have been, makes RADIANT an exciting, must read addition to this series.

And for those that don’t yet have BOUNDLESS, this novella offers an incredibly entertaining sneak peek at the prologue and first chapter.

On a personal note…

It was so easy to fall right back in love with this series when reading RADIANT. While Clara wasn’t exactly at her best – pining over Tucker, suffering from her visions – and Angela seemed to be at her worst – selfish, jealous, weak – I still found myself glued to this short story.

I wanted to know more about this mystery man. I wanted to know what it was about him that made Angela’s behavior totally change. I wanted to know if he was someone trustworthy or if Clara was right to be wary.

RADIANT was such a tease. It made me incredibly curious about Angela’s vision – what it meant, when it would come to pass and just who was the guy in the vision. It made me worried about what visions Clara was having. And it made me super nervous about the new character.

But it was the last line that killed me. I had to fight the urge to pick up BOUNDLESS the instant I finished reading this story. It filled me with dread about the events to come. And it made me worried about how just one small choice could alter things so drastically and for the worse.

Fortunately I have BOUNDLESS so I don’t have to wait too long to read it. I cannot imagine how torturous the wait must have been for those who read this novella before it was available to dive right into.

My Reading Pile #118

Jun 15

I didn’t get any print books in the mail this week, though the books I traded for will be arriving on Monday. But I did get approved for a couple of awesome titles on NetGalley this week, so it’s not a completely quiet week for books.

My-Reading-Pile-118

[Credit for mailbox sharing goes to The Story Siren]

It had been ages since I put in the request for PHANTOM EYES (Witch Eyes #3) by Scott Tracey, so I was sure I would never be approved. But when I got the OK to download it this week from Flux I was totally stoked.

And I never thought I’d get approved to read NEVER FADE (The Darkest Minds #2) by Alexandra Bracken, but thanks to the awesome folks at Disney-Hyperion I get to add this amazing book to my review pile.

And while I’d love to be able to read either one of these books this week, as both books aren’t releasing until October I won’t be adding them to the pile just yet. Of course I could go off-pile to read them….

But there are a couple books that I will be reading – that I’m dying to read – and they are…

Here are the books I have in my reading pile this week.
(June 16, 2013 – June 22, 2013)

05Boundless

addtogoodreads

First up on the pile is BOUNDLESS by Cynthia Hand. I hadn’t intended to say goodbye to this series this week, but thanks to the way the novella, RADIANT, ended, I just have to know what happens.

And I really, really want to know now. But I won’t be able to start on this week’s reads until Monday, as Novella Reading Week doesn’t end until then. But after that last line I’m so very anxious about what’s going to happen in this final book.

I tried not to listen to the chatter, but I did hear that there may have been tears involved for those who read it. Which makes me really, really nervous. Especially since the description mentions “sacrifices and betrayal” and that Clara is being watched by a fallen angel and that a battle with the Black Wings is “looming.”

I am expecting to have my heart broken in this finale. I’m positive that not everyone will survive. And I just have a feeling that the sacrifices that will have to be made are ones that will leave me in tears.

As much as I’ve been dreading saying goodbye to this series, I just have to know. I can’t wait any longer. And as soon as Monday rolls around I will be diving into this book.

If I Should Die

addtogoodreads

Next up on the pile is IF I SHOULD DIE by Amy Plum. It’s actually a back on the pile read, as I’d intended to read it a few weeks ago, but ran out of time. But now that I have read Jules’ story in the novella, I’m desperate to find out what happens with him in this final book in the series.

Between everything that happened in UNTIL I DIE and what was revealed in DIE FOR HER, I am excited to find out just what happens with Kate, Vincent, Jules and the rest of the revenants.

I am almost positive that the happily ever after I’m looking for won’t be the one at the end of this book. But I’m ever the optimist. Of course it is very possible that there won’t be a happy ending at all. Not after what happened at the end of book two.

Of course, Kate is a fighter. And the description hints that she’d be willing to “risk everything” to be with Vincent. So that particular happy ending is a possibility. Right?

As much as I want to know this instant, I suppose I’ll have to read the book first…. And I plan on doing just that on Tuesday or Wednesday.

Line_001

Wishful Thinking Reads:

WILD CARDS by Simone Elkeles is my wishful thinking read this week. I got approved the other week and I’m just dying to meet “bad boy” Derek Fitzpatrick. I love this author’s writing and her stories with their unconventional characters. So I’m really hoping my wish can become reality if I get a bit more reading done this week than just the two books I have on hte pile.

Line_001

Those Left Behind:

I put five novellas on the pile last week – GLITTER & DOOM, DESTROY ME, ORIGINS: THE FIRE, DIE FOR HER and FLIRTING WITH MAYBE. I only read two of them and I’m currently reading DESTROY ME. But I have until tomorrow to finish this week’s reads and I will be reading the remaining two stories.

I ended up choosing two other novellas to read first – UNDONE and RADIANT – but it doesn’t mean those others won’t be on my “read” pile by the end of tomorrow.

Of course I haven’t yet written any reviews for the novellas, but I also plan on working on those this weekend. They’re only “Quickie” reviews so I can’t imagine not being able to wrangle my thoughts about each read fairly quickly and posting my reviews before tomorrow’s end.

I did end up setting aside PHOENIX until the challenge was over, so I’ll have to finish that this week. And I had to postpone my review for DANCE OF THE RED DEATH due to a rather crowded blog schedule this past week. But it will be up on Tuesday.

I have some extra quiet time this week, so I’m hoping I’ll be able to write my review for INDELIBLE. But if I decide not to spend it reviewing I will be reading EARTH BOUND by Aprilynne Pike.

And while I have a few review books I need to be reading, after diving into some awesome novellas this past week, I just have to continue those series. The short peeks at the worlds and characters were enough to lure me back in and make me want more, more, more.

But I will be back to the review pile next week as there are a few titles I need to read before the month’s end. But for now I’m happy to read purely for pleasure. And no, I don’t feel guilty…. Well, not that guilty.

Line_001

NetGalley Pile Adds & Finds:

I did end up requesting one book from NetGalley this week….

Consume

CONSUME (The Clann #3) by Melissa Darnell (Harlequin Teen, Aug 27 2013)

I’ve read the first two books in the series and I’m curious to see what happens with Tristan and Savannah in this third book. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that I’ll be approved.

But that was my only request from NetGalley this week, though I also requested a book from Edelweiss.

And, as mentioned above, I was approved for NEVER FADE by Alexandra Bracken and PHANTOM EYES by Scott Tracey, so I’m super stoked about that.

***

But there are a couple of other books I am really tempted to request. However, as I have so many eBooks for review right now, I’m going to wait. I just don’t know for how long….

HEREAFTER by Kate Brian (Disney Book Group, Oct 1 2013)

TIME AFTER TIME by Tamara Ireland Stone (Disney Book Group, Oct 8 2013)

THE INFINITE MOMENT OF US by Lauren Myracle (Abrams, Aug 20 2013)

TASTE TEST by Kelly Fiore (Bloomsbury USA Children’s Books, Aug 27 2013)

SICK by Tom Leveen (Abrams, Oct 1 2013)

BANISH by Nicola Marsh (Harlequin Enterprise Australia, Aug 1 2013) ***Australian Reviewers Only***

LOVE DISGUISED by Lisa Klein (Bloomsbury USA Children’s Books, Jul 30 2013)

THE WEIGHT OF WATER by Sarah Crossan (Bloomsbury USA Children’s Books, Jul 23 2013)

RED by Alison Cherry (Random House Children’s, Oct 8 2013)

TANDEM (The Many-Worlds Trilogy #1) by Anna Jarzab (Random House Children’s, Oct 8 2013)

NOT YOUR ORDINARY WOLF GIRL by Emily Pohl-Weary (Penguin Canada, Sep 24 2013)

CONTAMINATED by Em Garner (Egmont USA, Jul 23 2013)

And… there is also a CHAPTER SAMPLER from UNHINGED by A.G. Howard (Abrams, Jan 7 2014) which I did request and was approved for.

I am trying so hard not to request any more titles, though I really am interested in requesting HEREAFTER by Kate Brian and TIME AFTER TIME by Tamara Ireland Stone. I love, love, love time travel stories so I think it’s very likely I will be requesting at least that one title.

And TANDEM sounds so unbelievably good as does THE INFINITE MOMENT OF US.

I will not request any more books. I will not request any more books. I will not….

Div01

Things are a bit up in the air with me this week. Because I have some quiet time to myself I may end up doing a little bit of writing instead of reading. Though I’m desperately in the mood to sink into a book or two or three.

My mood keeps shifting so it’s hard for me to decide upon a book to read in advance of reading it. But I’m certain I want to read the two books I have on the pile this week.

I did not expect the novellas to get me as excited about continuing the series as they did. Fortunately a few of the novellas are from series I am already caught up on. But I may end up skipping over the Throne of Glass novellas as I should wait just a little longer before diving into CROWN OF MIDNIGHT. And I just know the temptation will be too hard to resist if I start reading those short stories.

I hope to get a few more novellas read and maybe even a few of them reviewed before the end of the weekend, because I have a couple of reviews to post on the blog this week. And with a tour stop and my Novella Reading Week wrap-up posts on Monday, a giveaway and a review scheduled for Tuesday, another review set for Wednesday and my Book Watch post slated for Thursday, I don’t exactly have too many free days to try and post those Quickie Reviews.

And I really do want to spend more time reading. So, we’ll see….

As ever, I hope you had an amazing reading week, that you fell in love with a book or two, found a new “team” to cheer for and will meet one or two more this week. So, if you’d like to share what you’re planning on reading this week, what you’ve just moved off your reading pile or what amazing books you’ve received this week, leave a comment. I’d love to know.

The Distance Between Us

addtogoodreads

WatchBOOK-2

THE DISTANCE BETWEEN US by Kasie West will be released in the U.S. on July 2, 2013 in paperback and eBook formats.

It is currently available to pre-order online in both formats at AMAZON and BARNES & NOBLE.

Published by HarperTeen, the print edition is 320 pages.

div1

It feels like I’ve been waiting for this Book Watch post forever, because ever since I read Kasie West’s PIVOT POINT I’ve been dying to get my hands on THE DISTANCE BETWEEN US. So when it came time to choose the book to watch for the week of July 2nd there was no other book I could dream of spotlighting but this amazing-sounding book.

I just love the way this author tells a story and develops her characters and I cannot wait to see how she weaves her words in this contemporary tale which has been described as “Pretty in Pink meets Pride and Prejudice.” And I can’t wait to see if Caymen and Xander are able to overcome the distance between them or if the divide is just too great.

Aside from the fact that Caymen is wary about those with money and that her mother has warned her against rich boys’ attention spans, the description hints that there’s something more than just her mother’s disapproval that Caymen “should’ve been worried about” or rather someone. Which makes me really curious to find out just who that is.

I love stories where the characters are from different worlds, especially ones that involve differences in socioeconomic status. I mean, who doesn’t love a Cinderella story or a love story where one of those in love is from the wrong side of the tracks?

There’s nothing quite like class distinctions or biases to keep two people apart… or at the very least put some pretty big obstacles in the way of a happily-ever-after. And I’m super curious to see if what else, if anything, comes between Caymen and Xander.

I loved “Pretty in Pink.” It’s one of my favorite films. And I even loved the book that was clearly based on an earlier version of the script with a very, very different ending. So, if the framework for this story is anything like that movie I just know I’m going to love the DISTANCE BETWEEN US, even if the ending is a bittersweet or tragic one.

Of course, if the story is nothing like that movie, I still couldn’t imagine not loving it. A cautious and biased main character. A persistent, charming and wealthy love interest. A disapproving parent. And a love story that’s far from insta-love. How could I not love it?

So… because of its awesomeness, because the author is amazing and because I’m just dying to read this book, even though there are some other fantastic-sounding books releasing the week of July 2nd, for me, THE DISTANCE BETWEEN US is the book to watch this week.

About the Book

Goodreads description:

Seventeen-year-old Caymen Meyers studies the rich like her own personal science experiment, and after years of observation she’s pretty sure they’re only good for one thing—spending money on useless stuff, like the porcelain dolls in her mother’s shop.

So when Xander Spence walks into the store to pick up a doll for his grandmother, it only takes one glance for Caymen to figure out he’s oozing rich. Despite his charming ways and that he’s one of the first people who actually gets her, she’s smart enough to know his interest won’t last. Because if there’s one thing she’s learned from her mother’s warnings, it’s that the rich have a short attention span. But Xander keeps coming around, despite her best efforts to scare him off. And much to her dismay, she’s beginning to enjoy his company.

She knows her mom can’t find out—she wouldn’t approve. She’d much rather Caymen hang out with the local rocker who hasn’t been raised by money. But just when Xander’s attention and loyalty are about to convince Caymen that being rich isn’t a character flaw, she finds out that money is a much bigger part of their relationship than she’d ever realized. And that Xander’s not the only one she should’ve been worried about.

GODDESS Blog Tour: Guest Post + Giveaway

May 21

Button_Goddess1

I don’t think I could be any more excited than I am right now because I get to share Lucas Delos’ interview with Author Josephine Angelini for the GODDESS Blog Tour. And, as you might imagine, it is awesome.

Lucas is not afraid to ask the good questions. Those questions that every reader wants to know. Questions about happy endings, love triangles, fight scenes, kissing scenes. And, of course, my favorite – whether the author really does enjoy torturing her characters.

I don’t think I could be that brave an interviewer.

The Starcrossed Trilogy is one of my favorite YA series. I made an immediate connection to the story and to Helen and Lucas. I remember being so blown away by the scene in STARCROSSED where both characters fall from the sky and are broken and tangled up in one another. And I remember turning to the last page and then immediately going back to the first for a re-read.

It wasn’t my only re-read.

I love the mythology in this series and I adore its characters. Some more than others. Yes, I have been and always will be Team Lucas. But I’m also Team Helen.  Even though…. Must. Not. Reveal. Series. Spoilers.

And I love the author’s writing. Which makes me so incredibly sad that this series had to end after just the three books. Though, thanks to this tour, I found out about STARCROSSED CITY, a short story posted on the author’s website. Which means I don’t have to say goodbye quite yet. And with the author’s response to Lucas’ final interview question, it makes me wonder.

So….

I am just so unbelievably thrilled to be a part of this tour and to have Lucas Delos on the blog to share his interview with Josie. Which I opted to post immediately below.

But if you’d like to know more about GODDESS, about Josephine Angelini and about the other books in this gorgeous series, their details and places to find them online follow the interview.

There are also two awesome giveaways on the tour. So be sure to check out those details too.

Now, though, without any further ado, let me turn my blog over to Lucas.

The Interview

Lucas Delos Interviews Author Josephine Angelini

Line_001

LUCAS: Hi Josie.

JOSIE: What up, dawg?

LUCAS: Same old. So I guess we’ll get right to it…do you enjoy torturing your characters?

JOSIE: Every single one of them. Look, if you’re going to go Greek, you might as well get ready for some pretty horrific stuff. At least I didn’t kill all of you at the end, like I should have if I was going to make this really Greek. I just killed some of you.

LUCAS: You couldn’t have given Helen and me a perfectly happy ending? You had to complicate it?

JOSIE: I did give you a happy ending—just not a perfect one. Perfect is boring. And untrustworthy. I don’t trust perfect.

LUCAS: Okay, I can live with that. So, about not trusting perfect…where’d the fascination with Helen of Troy come from? She was the perfect beauty…

JOSIE: Yeah. And look at all the trouble it caused. It wasn’t really Helen of Troy I was interested in, not as she was written. I was interested in finding a way to make her, and Paris, sympathetic. I saw it as a huge challenge, considering they are two of the most hated characters in history. I wanted to write about their love story in a way that modern readers could relate to, and maybe understand.

LUCAS: Why the love triangle?

JOSIE: (laughs) I thought that might bother you. Actually, love triangles bother a lot of people. What I wanted to do with Orion (apart from the fact that I needed him to bring all the Houses together for plot reasons) was to offer up a few things that really bother me about love-triangles, and maybe try to work against the grain on them.

LUCAS: The things that bother you?

JOSIE: Yeah. One of the things that I don’t like in some love-triangles is that the spare guy—the one who everyone knows the girl isn’t going to choose—is never the one to say, “If you can’t make up your mind, then you’re not enough for me, Fancy Face.” Usually, the odd man out is some great guy who’d wait until the end of time or whatever. Heck no. I wanted Orion to recognize his own worth and demand better.

LUCAS: He is a good guy. Not my favorite guy right now, but whatever. Why are you so interested in my kind, anyway? Instead of Scions, why not write about normal people living in a normal town?

JOSIE: Snore. (laughs) Okay, I should be more diplomatic. I have nothing against straight stories, they just don’t speak to me the way fantasy and science fiction do. It’s probably because I read too much Shakespeare in my formative years.

LUCAS: Shakespeare?

JOSIE: Sure. Try to find a play he wrote that doesn’t have a ghost, a sorcerer, three witches, or a fairy in it. You’re down to Henry IV and V, and I didn’t read those when I was a kid. Most classical works have gods and monsters in them, and even when they don’t, they are about kings and queens, larger-than-life people, who changed the world. I think fantasy and science fiction keep the classical tradition alive.

LUCAS: What’s with all the fight scenes? I’m still a little beat up from it.

JOSIE: Sorry ‘bout that. I love to write action. It’s the kissing scenes I have a problem with.

LUCAS: Don’t get me wrong. I like a nice brawl, but I could have used a few more kissing scenes.

JOSIE: But what if I wrote them about Helen and Orion?

LUCAS: Scratch that. I think you wrote plenty of kissing scenes.

JOSIE: Smart lad. Anything else?

LUCAS: Last question. I would like to know, and my family would like to know, if you’re done harassing us?

JOSIE: Possibly. I plead the fifth.

LUCAS: (grinning) You really suck.

JOSIE: (grinning back) I really do.
