I Have a COMPULSION for Magic Blog Tour: Kami Garcia and Kimberly Derting Guest Post + Giveaway

Compulsion_MMBT

I am so excited to be participating in the I Have a COMPULSION for Magic Blog Tour hosted by Mundie Moms Blog Tours.

I cannot wait for COMPULSION to be released later this month so that I can meet Barrie and Eight. And although Andye of Reading Teen claims Eight for herself, I’m not giving up any claim. Not without having had the chance to meet him.

This tour kicked off yesterday and continues all the way up to COMPULSION’s release on the 28th. So be sure to follow along – the schedule can be found at the bottom of this post or on its very own tour page, which you can find by clicking the banner (or the link) above.

This tour is filled with all sorts of awesome excerpts from COMPULSION, guest posts from a number of amazing authors, and a super fab giveaway – none of which you’ll want to miss.

Especially my post today which follows below…

The Guest Author Feature

We’re kicking off something special on the Compulsion for Magic tour with a guest-author feature! On different stops of the tour, we’re going to ask authors to weigh in and talk about what kinds of Compulsion-style magical gifts they (or their characters) would like to have and definitely wouldn’t want to have.

Simon Pulse, the publisher of Compulsion has suggested the book is a little like Beautiful Creatures meets The Body Finder, by which they mean it’s like an atmospheric Southern Gothic romance with paranormal elements meets a mystery solved by a main character with an ability to find lost things.

Since Kimberly Derting, author of The Body Finder series, The Pledge novels, and The Taking, had nice things to say after reading Compulsion, we asked her to share some thoughts.

But first . . .

We want to hear from you!

For a chance to win the HUGE tour mega prize of books and the $100 gift card, tell us about the magical gift you’d like to have, but remember—as it is on Compulsion’s Watson Island—magic is often a curse as well as a gift. Don’t forget to think about what it would really be like!

Want to get a head start on your answer?

We also asked Kami Garcia, the #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Beautiful Creatures novels, Unbreakable and Unmarked in The Legion series, and the new Dangerous Creatures series, what kind of magical gift she would like to have.

Here’s Kami’s answer…

“I would love to be able to bend metal like Magneto. Imagine the possibilities… Secretly, I just want to be Magneto.”

And here’s what Kimberly Derting had to say…

If you could have any “everyday” magical gift, like finding lost things or knowing what people want, what gift would you want and why?

I like the finding-lost-things one, mostly since I come from a family of people who lose everything! But I think if I could have any power, other than a Midas turn-everything-into-chocolate touch, it would definitely be to know where my kids are at all times. And I’m not talking about the “Where’s my iPhone” stalker-mom magical app (although I do love that!). Don’t get me wrong, I don’t want to know what they’re always doing, since two of my kids are 21 and 27, but I love the idea of looking into my crystal ball and knowing that they’re safe.

On the other hand, maybe the Midas-chocolate thing after all! ☺

What everyday magic would your characters wish they had and why?

I can sort of imagine Violet (from THE BODY FINDER) wishing she could turn off the whole finding dead bodies thing, and instead picking something fun like walking through walls, flying, or being invisible. All of those are way less disturbing than being drawn to the dead.

Eight, Barrie’s love interest in Compulsion, has inherited his family’s gift of knowing what people want and feeling compelled to give it to them. What’s one gift you’re glad you don’t have? Or your characters would be glad they didn’t have?

I think at one point or another everyone sort of wishes they could read minds. That is, until you really think about all the weird/creepy/probably even insulting things you’d be overhearing inside other people’s heads. I’m not sure I want to know every teeny-tiny thing my husband, my kids, or even my neighbors think about me. Or anyone else for that matter.

Barrie is tied to her family’s plantation, Watson’s Landing, in a magical way, and the whole landscape becomes magical for her. What’s the one place in your book that you wish you could bring to life?

My place would be the ice castle in THE ESSENCE, book #2 in The Pledge trilogy. It’s this old fortress built into an island covered almost entirely in ice and snow, and for some reason (which is strange, since I’m always freezing!), it’s the one place in my novels I’d like to see in real life. (I guess I need to write some books that are set in the Bahamas!)

If you were going to a Halloween party and you had to dress as a character from a Southern Gothic or a Gothic romance, what would your costume look like?

I would go full Scarlett O’Hara, but only because I’ve always wanted to wear a hoop skirt 😉

* * *

You have to love Kimberley! A Midas touch for chocolate? Count me in!

Now your turn!  Tell us about your magic.

And/Or . . .

Bonus option

If you’ve already done that elsewhere on the tour or just want to do something different for extra entry points, show us your magical or Southern gothic costume! How would you do Scarlet O’Hara? Or would you do Lily from The Raven Boys? Violet from Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea? Daphne du Maurier’s Rebecca? Or how would you show an “everyday magic” as a Halloween costume?

Post a comment with the URL to your photo and we’ll share it. Use tag #CompulsionMagic.

The Interview

Q. You call the setting a “magical place” on your website. Could you paint us a picture of Watson Island?

Watson Island is the sort of sleepy, close-knit, gossipy town that most people who have visited the South will recognize, with a bit of a difference. The town is well aware of the magic that surrounds the three founding families, and particularly the plantation at Watson’s Landing. They keep the secret. In that way, the book begins like magical realism, but the magic is part of the mystery that Barrie Watson has to uncover when she arrives.

The truly magical place is Watson’s Landing. There, the spirit of a Cherokee witch sets the river surrounding the property on fire each night at midnight in a ceremony he has performed for longer than anyone remembers in order to keep the land protected and to keep the yunwi, the mischievous and magical little people, confined to the island. As Barrie comes to find out, she is bound to this land, both physically and spiritually, and uncovering what that means and why the island exists is part of what I am having a blast exploring in the course of the trilogy.

The gifts (and the curse) that belong to the Watsons, Beauforts, and Colesworths, all tie into this magic, but not necessarily for the reasons the families think.

Q. Had you always planned for your story to be a trilogy? If so, what makes a trilogy the best way to tell the tale? If not, have you had to make any significant changes to it?

My acquiring editor is very smart. I had planned three companion novels to tell this story, one from the perspective of a member of each family, but she saw that not only was the romance between Eight and Barrie the heart of the story, but that the magic of Watson’s Landing was the story itself. I didn’t have to change much except the point of view, but I’m so glad that I’m having the chance to explore what is happening at Watson’s Landing in greater detail.

Q. What was your favorite scene to write in COMPULSION (and why)? And can you share a teaser from that scene?

I love the beach scene where Barrie and Eight finally get to really kiss — there are a lot of other things going on in that scene, but I can still see it so clearly in my mind:

Drained by the aftereffects of anger and adrenaline, Barrie found herself breathing in Eight’s recklessness, swept up in it, and suddenly it didn’t matter where they were going or what he planned to do. His moods were contagious, dangerous to her equilibrium.

He stopped at the beach, the same beach where they’d seen the turtle nest. Neither of them said a word while Eight retrieved a musty-smelling towel from his trunk and caught Barrie’s hand, lacing their fingers like they were made to fit.

They ran barefoot over the dunes and through a break in the pickets that held back the sea oats. The moon turned the white sand to diamond dust, and Eight laid the towel down above the hide-tide marker of shells and seaweed and damp, dark sand. He sat down and drew her against him, her back against his chest.

His arms wrapped around her, and she leaned into the solidness of him. His heartbeat washed through her like the waves, until she didn’t know whether the pounding of it was hers or his.

When she sighed and relaxed, he eased her down and leaned over and finally kissed her until she felt like she was going to fall. She reached for him, kissing him more deeply. His lips were scalding on hers, leaving her tingling and whole instead of so, so alone. She wanted the feeling, the moment, to never stop.

Only when she came up for air did the word “love” enter her thoughts. She pushed it away, but maybe by the time any girl thought about protecting herself, keeping herself from falling for a guy who was going to leave her brokenhearted, it was already too late. Maybe it had been like that for Lula with Wade, and instead of being Prince Charming, Wade had turned out to be like Wyatt.

“Why do you suppose my mother was afraid of Wyatt?” Barrie rolled and rested on one elbow to look at Eight.

“Apart from what we saw tonight, you mean?”

“I assumed it was about the feud. Because she was a Watson and she’d run off with Wyatt’s brother. But it felt more personal.”

“Feuds are always personal. That’s what makes it hard to break the cycle. Everyone lives locked inside their own anger until someone is finally brave enough to step outside themselves to see the view from the other side. It’s why I need to get away from this place.”

“But you’re not stepping out for a different view.” Barrie tipped her face up to the stars so she wouldn’t have to look at him. “You’re stepping out to run away.”

He was silent, and she was suddenly afraid. Afraid that she had said too much, presumed too much, hoped too much. She rolled her capris as high as they would go, then ran toward the water. She didn’t look back until she was knee deep, which was as far as she dared. He was right behind her, his face gleaming in the kind of light that turned beautiful boys into gods. He caught her, and held her, his skin so warm and alive, she couldn’t help but melt.

“Why did you run?” he asked.

“To see if you’d come after me.”

“It scares me how willing I am to run after you. We’re both doing too much running.”

“So kiss me again.”

Her hands crept around his neck, tangling in his hair to keep him closer, even though she knew that beautiful boys with expiration dates couldn’t be held, only borrowed for a time.

Q. Your Goodreads bio mentions that COMPULSION has romance, mystery, mayhem and magic. Which component was your favorite to write about? And can you tell us just a little bit more about the mayhem?

Compulsion is a Southern Gothic, so there is definitely the “setting as character” aspect to the story, which I’ve outlined a bit in the previous question about the magic. But it also introduces elements of narrative that are unique to the South—the sense of a place remaining static as history eddies around it the way water flows around a rock, the way social position and family determine not only how a person is viewed but also who they become, the desire to both embrace and run away from the past. There are also the characters, who, as is requisite in a Southern Gothic, are weird and fantastic and often “grotesque.” Apart from the romance, that’s my favorite aspect.

Where I departed from the Southern Gothic is that I pushed the paranormal elements and the romance further than usual. The School Library Journal calls it a “little bit Gone with the Wind and a little bit Romeo and Juliet” and it is like that, which I love. I also took the typical macabre and fantastical situation and made them related to the wishes and the curse that tie the three families together. That results in things that went very wrong on three different timelines, each of which place Barrie into danger as she starts to connect the pieces.

All of that makes the book a bit of a hybrid. It starts out sleepy in the way of a Southern Gothic, and along the way, the romance is building between Eight and Barrie, and between Barrie and Watson’s Landing. Walking in Barrie’s footsteps, the reader is following a protagonist who has led a very sheltered life and has no idea that a place like Watson’s Landing could exist. She has little experience with people, or with family, so she has to figure out who to trust and how far to trust them. Mostly, she has to learn to trust herself as she grows into her own strength. But as she gets stronger, she pushes other people more to get the answers she needs, and that results in the “mayhem” I mentioned. Careful readers will see things building in the beginning that others, including Barrie, might have missed. They won’t be surprised when it turns into a thriller by the end. 🙂

Q. COMPULSION comes out on October 28th, what has it been like waiting for its release day? And do you plan on waiting at the bookstore for it to hit shelves on the 28th?

I’m lucky to be part of an AMAZING tour, which we’re calling Compelling Reads (www.CompellingReads.com). There are eleven stops on the tour and eighteen incredible authors. The way things worked out, we’re actually starting events on the tour on the 26th with a presentation at the Arlington Library, and my actual launch party will be on the 27th with a Book Dating Gameshow at One More Page Books including Melissa Marr, Wendy Higgins, Leah Cypess, and Kimberley Griffiths Little. These are literally some of my favorite authors on the planet, and I am beyond honored that they’ve read the book and are willing to come hang out with me and celebrate their own books as well as mine. I guess that means technically I’ll be waiting at the bookstore BEFORE the 28th, and honestly, between putting that tour together, working on Persuasion (Book Two), putting together the massive book-trailer celebration and pre-order giveaways (www.CompulsionToRead.com), I’ve had very little time to feel like I’m “waiting” for release day. I’m so happy and grateful to have the opportunity to share this book with bloggers and readers, and it’s truly bewildering how kind everyone has been!

Book Watch: Releasing This Week #18

Below are the YA books coming out this week that I am spotlighting for my “Book Watch: Releasing This Week” post.

These are books for the week of May 3rd-May 9th that I have pre-ordered.

Bite Club by Rachel Caine is the 10th book in The Morganville Vampires series. It will be released in the U.S. on May 3, 2011 in hardcover, eBook and audio formats.

It is currently available online for pre-order in all formats at Amazon and in hardcover and eBook formats at Barnes & Noble.

Published by NAL, the print edition is 352 pages.

I fell in love with this series when I first started reading young adult books about vampires. Although I haven’t yet read one for review purposes, I enthusiastically five-starred them all on Goodreads because I just adored the story and the characters.

I love this purple cover for Bite Club and I can’t wait for it to download this week. I’m ashamed that I haven’t yet read Ghost Town but I will be doing so really soon as I miss this world and these characters.

I didn’t read too many descriptions in case they gave away spoilers but this installment in the series seems to be about some kind of fight club with vampires, which sounds like a really dangerous endeavor. Ah, I get it now, “fight club” and “Bite Club.”

To read an excerpt of the first two chapters from Scribd, CLICK HERE.

I did end up pre-ordering a signed copy of Bite Club for giveaway on the blog. Once I get it, I’ll be sure to post all details.

Illusions is the third book in the Wings (also called Laurel) series by author Aprilynne Pike. It will be releasing in the U.S. on May 3, 2011 in hardcover and eBook formats.

It is currently available online for pre-order in both formats at Amazon and Barnes & Noble.

Published by HarperTeen, the print edition is 384 pages.

I was really fortunate to receive a copy of Illusions through a book trade. I have another copy coming to me, too, as I apparently traded for this one twice, but I have the eBook pre-ordered for download this week even though I’ve already reviewed it here back in March.

This is another one of my guilty pleasures series. It’s sweet and fun and the love triangle makes me crazy. I’m a Tamani fan all the way. I have the first two books on my Kindle and can’t wait for Illusions to download so that my collection will be complete.

Book trailer for Illusions:

Hounded is the first book in The Iron Druid Chronicles by author Kevin Hearne. It will be released in the U.S. on May 3, 2011 in paperback, eBook and audio formats.

It is currently available for pre-order in all formats at Amazon and Barnes & Noble.

Published by Del Rey, the print edition is 320 pages.

I had been following the author for awhile on Twitter and decided to check out his books on Goodreads. They sounded really cool so I pre-ordered the three books available in the series. The main character is a young tattooed Irish guy who can shapeshift and is actually centuries old even though he looks like he’s in his twenties.

This book is definitely urban fantasy, filled with shifters, vampires, werewolves and witches. And I can’t wait to see what this series has to offer.

Shift is the second book in the Shade series by author Jeri Smith-Ready. It will be released in the U.S. on May 3, 2011 in hardcover, eBook and audio formats.

It is currently available online for pre-order at Amazon and Barnes & Noble in all formats. And if you check out the author’s website, she has a link to the Indie Bookstore where you can order signed copies of Shift.

Published by Simon Pulse, a division of Simon & Schuster, the print edition is 384 pages.

I’ve already spotlighted this book for my Book Watch post, which has a few other links, the Shade book trailer and a few more of my ramblings, so I won’t continue to gush here, even though I am on the Shade street team to support this author and her amazing books.

I have an electronic ARC of this book from Simon & Schuster’s Galley Grab program, so I will be reviewing this book on Monday or release date. But I also have a pre-order of the eBook which will download and have also pre-ordered a personalized signed book from the Indie Bookstore to complete my collection as I got Shade signed by the author at RT.

I also have ordered a signed copy for giveaway on the blog in support of the author and to do my part for the street team. I was given a number of signed and unsigned bookmarks from the author, but what good is a signed bookmark without a nice signed book to tuck it into? So, I couldn’t not buy a copy to give away on the blog.

Compulsion by Heidi Ayarbe will also be released on May 3, 2011 in the U.S. It is currently available for pre-order online at Amazon and Barnes & Noble in hardcover and eBook formats.

Published by Balzer + Bray, a division of Harper Collins, the print edition is 304 pages.

(Although the title uses the number one for the letter “I,” I have chosen to spell the book the traditional way so that it can be searchable.)

This story grabbed my attention with its cover. I knew right away it was a book about OCD and I thought that the topic would be very interesting to read about. I have not read anything else by the author, but was immediately drawn in by just the brief description provided.

This subject is very personal to me and I’m looking forward to reading this story which I heard got some terrific reviews.

Moonglass is the debut novel for author Jessi Kirby. It will be released in the U.S. on May 3, 2011 in hardcover and eBook formats.

It is currently available online for pre-order at Amazon and Barnes & Noble in both formats, although Amazon is listing the print edition as currently available.

Published by Simon & Schuster Children’s Publishing, the print edition is 240 pages.

Moonglass is one of the books that can be chosen for the 2011 Debut Author Challenge hosted by Kristi at TheStorySiren.com.

I just finished reading and reviewing an ARC of this book a few days ago and posted my review here on the blog so I won’t go into too much detail again. But I loved this heartbreaking story and the author’s writing so I immediately added the eBook to my pre-orders as I had to pass along the ARC to another reviewer that I promised it to.

I had no idea when I started reading the book that the location was real, and once I finished I looked up the website for Crystal Cove and saw just how well the author captured the feel of this small beach community in her story.

The main character’s story is a sad one, but the author treats it with a delicacy and optimism that keep this from being heavy. There is a touch of romance, but it is not the main focus. And there is a sweet, somewhat clueless and funny friend who will make you smile. Although this takes place on a beach, it’s not a light and flirty beach story, but it won’t leave you completely gutted.

If you haven’t heard of the book, you can check out the description on Goodreads, here.

Divergent by Veronica Roth is another debut book releasing on May 3, 2011 in the U.S. It is currently available online for pre-order at Amazon and Barnes & Noble in hardcover and eBook formats.

Published by Katherine Tegen Books the print edition is 496 pages.

Divergent is one of the books that can be chosen for the 2011 Debut Author Challenge hosted by Kristi at TheStorySiren.com.

I am really looking forward to this book. I heard so many great things about it and was told I had to read it. I managed to do a trade for an ARC, but haven’t yet received it, so I’ll be either reading that copy or the final eBook that I have on pre-order for my review this week.

As I’ve mentioned in My Reading Pile post, I have not looked at any book descriptions, read any reviews or know really anything about this. I am buying this solely based on the hype. I am known to do that now and again.

The cover is amazing and as I think this is a debut novel that I will really enjoy.

The author talks a little bit about the book in this video, which I haven’t watched, but will once I’ve read Divergent.

The Vampire Diaries: Stefan’s Diaries #3: The Craving will be released in the U.S. on May 3, 2011 in paperback, eBook, library binding and audio formats.

It is currently available for pre-order in all formats at Amazon and in paperback, library binding and eBook formats at Barnes & Noble.

Published by HarperTeen, the print edition is 256 pages.

The Vampire Diaries: Stefan’s Diaries series is inspired by the books by L.J. Smith and the television show by Kevin Williamson and Julie Plec. I have purchased the first two books in the series but still haven’t gotten around to reading them. I am very behind on my The Vampire Diaries books right now and so I have a lot of catching up to do.

Even though I haven’t read either of the first two of these books in the series, I had to buy this one to keep the complete collection intact. I love almost all things The Vampire Diaries and I’m sure when the television show goes on hiatus I will definitely be looking to read more about Damon, Stefan, Elena and Katherine.

Dead Reckoning is the 11th book in the Southern Vampires series by author Charlaine Harris. It will be released in the U.S. on May 3, 2011 in hardcover, eBook and audio formats.

It is currently available online for pre-order at Amazon and Barnes & Noble in all formats.

Published by Ace, the print edition is 336 pages.

I have been waiting a long time for this installment in the series. I really wish I had the patience to wait two years between books so that I could read two at a time rather than being strung along year after year. I was lucky not to discover this series until after the ninth book’s release, but sadly I’ve had to wait just like everyone else for these last two books.

I have not looked at any of the excerpts as I refused to put myself through the torment this time, like I did last year. But I’m really excited that this is finally coming out so that can I find out what’s in store for Sookie and Eric. And I am hoping that the author doesn’t leave this book with a cliffhanger ending like she did book nine.

The author is offering a peek at Chapter One on her website, HERE.

There is also an excerpt from Chapter Three being offered by Penguin, HERE, for those who just can’t wait.

This week has a ginormous amount of new releases. Ugh, my poor wallet. So not good for reducing book buys. But these are all books I want to have in my collection so I will bite the bullet.

As always, I would love to hear what you’re hoping to add to your collection this week!

And please let me know if I missed purchasing something that is a “must read” – though I’m a little afraid to have ten books download in one week…or one day as the case may be!
