Goodreads description:

When you can see things others can’t, what do you do when someone’s watching you?

Everybody knows about Clarity “Clare” Fern. She’s the psychic girl in school, the one who can place her hands on something and see hidden visions from the past.

Only Clare would rather not be a celebrity. She prefers hanging back, observing. Her gift is not a game to her.

But then someone starts playing with her head . . . and heart. Messages and gifts from a secret admirer crop up everywhere Clare turns. Could they be from Gabriel, the gorgeous boy who gets Clare’s pulse racing? Or from Justin, Clare’s hopeful ex-boyfriend who’d do anything to win her back?

One thing is certain. Clare needs to solve this mystery, and soon. Because the messages are becoming sinister, and a girl in town has suddenly disappeared.

***

Things have finally started to quiet down for Clarity Fern after the events that took place over the summer landed her in the spotlight. While she was happy not to be called the town “freak” anymore, by almost everyone, she preferred not to be the center of attention.

But not everything has returned to normal. Brooke and Kendra, two of the Barbie Brigade that used to torment her, now treat her like she’s their new best friend. Her brother Perry is no longer the outgoing, social, flirty and fun older brother he used to be. And it seems she has a secret admirer.

When notes and flowers begin to show up at school and at home, Clare is flattered. Since she hasn’t been able to choose between Justin, her ex, and Gabriel, a very tempting possibility, she assumes it’s one of them.

But she starts to grow concerned when it feels as if she’s being watched and followed. Even though she thinks she’s probably imagining things, she isn’t so quick to disregard what she’s feeling, because as a psychic her intuition is almost never wrong.

Someone is behind all of it. She just has to find out who. And if that wasn’t enough of a mystery for her to solve, it appears that a girl has gone missing. Someone she may be able to help find using her abilities.

Things don’t seem to stay quiet in Eastport for long. And Clare just can’t stay out of danger. At least she can count on Tiffany to be her same cruel, tormenting, back-stabbing and completely normal self.

***

Perception is an immensely entertaining story, a captivating mystery and a thoroughly enjoyable one-sit-read. This incredibly fast-paced sequel, with characters that are exciting and either lovable, detestable or somewhere in between, is utterly engaging and has such an easy flow.

The story returns readers to Eastport and picks up shortly after the events in Clarity ended. Clarity “Clare” Fern has started her Junior year in high school and is attempting to once again fade into the background. But not everyone is willing to let that happen.

With a secret admirer who may be more stalker than admirer and a missing girl who may have simply just run away or could already be dead, Clare has two pretty big mysteries to solve. All the while still trying to decide whether to forgive Justin or to take a chance on Gabriel.

As the mystery deepens and the danger to Clare becomes more real, she’ll have to rely on more than just her psychic abilities to find answers and she’ll have to put her trust in someone. She just hopes it’s the right someone.

Author Kim Harrington has followed up her debut novel with a sequel that is just as charming, just as exciting and just as suspenseful. Her main character, Clare Fern is every bit as strong as she was, perhaps even stronger because of all she’s been through, and if possible, even more likable.

She is smart, kind and compassionate. And it is her interest in solving the mystery and her willingness to help, even when helping could put her at risk, that make her such an endearing character.

While some of the other characters from the first book aren’t as prominent in this second book in the series, new characters are added to the mix that are just as engaging, intriguing or suspicion-inducing, giving readers more characters to question, doubt and mistrust, and giving this series room to grow.

As the story progresses, the pace escalates and the tension continues to build, all leading up to a dramatic finish in which all is revealed.

Perception is an absolutely delightful story and a must read for those looking for a quick and fun mystery with a paranormal twist, an abundance of enticing characters and an ending that won’t leave off at the edge of a cliff.

Reviewer gives this book…

On a personal note:

I absolutely love this sequel. I loved Clarity and I love Perception just as much. It was such an adorable, fun and super quick read. Just as I knew it would be. I really hope there is a third book planned in this series because I already miss Clare, Gabriel, Perry, Starla and even Justin.

For the record, I do not miss Tiffany.

Clare Fern is an easy to love heroine – one of my favorites. She’s sweet, clever, caring and understanding. But she’s not a total pushover. And she has this awesome ability – retrocognitive psychometry – which she wants to use to help others rather than as some party trick or way to make money.

I loved getting back into the world, seeing my favorite characters again, meeting new ones and being challenged to solve the mysteries. While I had that “aha” moment and was able to figure out whodunit right away, I was still captivated by the story and it was totally fun to see Clare try to puzzle things out.

Once again the author did an amazing job making almost all the characters seem suspicious. And while one stood out to me, I could just as easily have been wrong, like I was when I read Clarity. And before I end up letting something slip, I’ll stop talking about the mystery.

But for the same reason, it’s also impossible to talk about the characters without giving something away. Any of them. Old or new. There were a few new and interesting characters in this series, but I can’t say whether I liked them or not without spoiling the mystery. And I can’t say whether or not I was happy to see certain old characters again, because that would be spoiler-y, too.

Though, I suppose I can say that there were characters I loved, characters I wanted to love, characters who gave me the heebie-jeebies, characters I really hoped weren’t guilty and characters I really hoped were.

And I can’t not talk about the love triangle. I absolutely love the love triangle in this book. While it wasn’t the main focus of the story, it was always there in the background. Neither boy was an obvious choice. And Clare’s decision wasn’t a guaranteed one. Which made me very, very nervous.

While I had my favorite, I had no idea if he would be Clare’s pick or even if she’d choose either boy. This was one mystery that kept me in the dark for the entire book. And I mean the entire book. No early answers to that question.

As with the first book, the mysteries were solved and everything was wrapped up pretty nicely in the end. I am just keeping fingers and toes crossed that there will be many more books to come in this series. I would be totally happy to devour them all.

***

I had a couple of passages I loved, but only one favorite:

Gabriel studied me for a moment. “You don’t realize it, do you?”

I blinked, twice. “Realize what?”

“What makes you different makes you beautiful.”

My breath caught in my throat.

Review: Clarity

Mar 12

Clarity is author Kim Harrington’s debut young adult novel. It was released in the U.S. on March 1, 2011 in hardcover and eBook formats. It is available online at Amazon and Barnes & Noble in both formats.

Published by Point (Scholastic) the print edition is 256 pages.

Clarity is one of the books that can be chosen for the 2011 Debut Author Challenge hosted by Kristi at TheStorySiren.com and is one of my original twelve picks.

Goodreads description:

When you can see things others can’t, where do you look for the truth?

This paranormal murder mystery will have teens reading on the edge of their seats.

Clarity “Clare” Fern sees things. Things no one else can see. Things like stolen kisses and long-buried secrets. All she has to do is touch a certain object, and the visions come to her. It’s a gift.

And a curse.

When a teenage girl is found murdered, Clare’s ex-boyfriend wants her to help solve the case–but Clare is still furious at the cheating jerk. Then Clare’s brother–who has supernatural gifts of his own–becomes the prime suspect, and Clare can no longer look away. Teaming up with Gabriel, the smoldering son of the new detective, Clare must venture into the depths of fear, revenge, and lust in order to track the killer. But will her sight fail her just when she needs it most?

***

It’s doubtful the summer could get much worse for Clarity Fern. Her boyfriend Justin, the boy she loved and the only friend she had aside from her brother and his friend Nate, betrayed her by cheating on her with the skanky Tiffany. One drunken moment and everything they had together was shattered.

Now she would have to spend the summer alone, fending off the teasing and taunts by herself. No one wanted to befriend the town freak. It’s not that everyone didn’t believe she had psychic abilities, it’s just that those who did, didn’t want anything to do with her. Justin was the only one who did.

And though she came from a family of psychics, her brother Perry did not have the same problems she did. Because of his looks, girls were willing to overlook almost anything. And it’s not like she’s ugly. She’s seen the way guys look at her. But having retrocognitive psychometry, or visions from touch, would creep anyone out. Just one touch could bring on a vision. It’s how she found out about Justin and Tiffany.

But summer is the busy season for the family business and she is required to put in her time, although she’d much rather spend her days at the beach than giving psychic readings to a bunch of tourists. With a new psychic in town with a prime boardwalk location, her mom is more desperate than ever to get clients so they can make it through the slow season.

She didn’t think it was possible, but things do get even worse. When the body of a teenage girl is found at the local motel, not only is Clare asked to assist in the investigation, but she will have to work alongside her ex. The only bright spot is Gabriel, the super sexy son of the new detective.

With a killer on the loose, the family business in jeopardy and someone she loves a suspect in the crime, Clare finally has a reason to be thankful for her abilities, she only hopes they give her the answers she needs in time.

***

Clarity is a story that is easy to fall in love with. It is a delightful, fast-paced and captivating mystery with a plot that will keep you guessing until all is revealed at the end. And one with just the perfect number of suspects to make this a real puzzle.

Clarity “Clare” Fern is a strong, likable and believable main character. She is fiercely protective of those she cares about and is not afraid to stand up to people who try to put her down. She stays strong and true to her character, even after being betrayed by her boyfriend, and even when it means she’ll be alone.

This is an absolutely fantastic debut novel by author Kim Harrington. Her writing feels effortless – the story just flows on the page from beginning to end. It is a mystery you will be able to just breeze through while trying to figure out whodunit and in the process fall in love with all the characters.

This looks to be an exciting new series and is a must read for fans of mysteries, puzzles and well-written stories with a touch of the paranormal. There is a bit of a love triangle for fans who like them, and not enough of one to be a distraction for those who don’t.

Reviewer gives this book

On a personal note:

This was such a fun and light read. That is if you can call a murder mystery light or fun. I just sailed through this story and loved every second of it.

I did not realize this was as much of a mystery story as it was when I started reading or I would have immediately tried to guess whodunit. And I usually consider myself pretty good at figuring out who the killer is, but I found myself flipping back and forth between who and why so many times I made myself crazy.

And I will admit it. I was not exactly right with my guess. Close, but no cigar for me!

Author Kim Harrington was just so good at distributing suspicion evenly among all the characters. And like Clare, once all was explained all the pieces fit together and I had my “aha” and “duh” moments. This is one of maybe three mysteries I’ve read where I wasn’t right – and I’ve read a ton of Agatha Christie and Mary Higgins Clark books.

I love Clare. She is loyal to her family but not unrealistically so. She is strong and determined and not ashamed of who she is and what she does. Her mom is a great character – the perfect hippy psychic – though definitely one I would not have wanted to be my mom. She is nosy and selfish and seems to have little disregard for what her children want. And to have named her son Periwinkle is just cruel!

And I thought the love triangle in this was perfect. It was subtle and felt very real and unforced.

There was a great setup for the next book with a number of questions to be answered about Clare and her family and a psychic vision about the future we’ll have to wait and see if it comes true. (Though I totally wish I didn’t have to wait.)

Favorite quote: “I’m tired of trying to hate you.” (I can not give attribution to the quote without spoilers, so I’ll just leave it here to tease.)

Book Watch: Releasing This Week #9

Feb 28

Below are the YA books coming out this week that I am spotlighting for my “Book Watch: Releasing This Week” post.

Here are the books for the week of March 1st-7th that I have ordered or am purchasing on release date.

Demonglass is the second book in the Hex Hall series by author Rachel Hawkins. It will be released on March 1, 2011 in the U.S. in hardcover and eBook formats.

It is available for pre-order from Amazon and Barnes & Noble in both formats.

Published by Hyperion Books, the print edition is 368 pages.

UPDATE: Click here to read the excerpt.

I only recently read Hex Hall and I’ve heard nothing but amazing things about this sequel. This is one of the first books that I’ve actually read reviews for – non spoiler-y ones anyway – as I couldn’t wait to get some insight into the sequel.

The first book was immensely entertaining and I’ve heard there is much more action in this one. Author Rachel Hawkins is a fantastic writer and I love the world that was created for Sophie.

If you haven’t read Hex Hall you’ll only need the one day as it is such a quick read and one you won’t be able to put down. Plenty of time for you to catch up before the Tuesday release of Demonglass.

If you’d like to read my review of Hex Hall click here.

If you want to learn more about Demonglass from my “Book Watch” post click here.

Clarity is the debut young adult novel for author Kim Harrington. It will be released in the U.S. on March 1, 2011 in hardcover and eBook formats. It is available for pre-order in both formats at Amazon and Barnes & Noble.

Published by Point (Scholastic) the print edition is 256 pages.

Clarity is one of the books that can be chosen for the 2011 Debut Author Challenge hosted by Kristi at TheStorySiren.com. It is one of my original twelve picks.

I don’t know too much about the book, except that it’s gotten positive feedback from those who’ve read it. It’s dubbed a “paranormal murder mystery” and I love mysteries.

The main character, Clarity, has the ability to see things through visions she gets from touch, and it’s her abilities that will help her in solving a murder.

I have not read any excerpts, just the book description, but I will definitely read this one soon – can’t wait- and as it’s a short book, it can easily be read in one sitting.

Falling Under is the debut young adult novel for author Gwen Hayes. It will also be releasing on March 1, 2011 in paperback and eBook formats in the U.S. It is currently available for pre-order in both formats at Amazon and Barnes & Noble.

Published by NAL Trade the print edition is 336 pages.

Falling Under is also one of the books that can be chosen for the 2011 Debut Author Challenge hosted by Kristi at TheStorySiren.com. Although not one of my original twelve choices this was a book I’ve had on pre-order for awhile and was definitely planning on reading in 2011.

I chose to buy this book simply because of the cover, and then because of its description. I have been anticipating this book’s release for quite some time now and am so glad it’s finally here.

I hope to read this book this week, although due to the overwhelming number of February TBRs I might not get to read this until next week. But I will NOT let this one move down the list as it looks amazing.

If you’d like to read the Goodreads description or watch the trailer, check out my Book Watch post here.

The Liar Society is the debut novel for authors Lisa and Laura Roecker. It will be released in the U.S. on March 1, 2011 in paperback and eBook formats. It is now available for pre-order from Amazon in both formats and Barnes & Noble in paperback only.

Published by Sourcebooks Fire, the paperback is 368 pages.

The Liar Society is one of the books that can be chosen for the 2011 Debut Author Challenge hosted by Kristi at TheStorySiren.com.

If you haven’t been on Twitter you may not have seen any of the authors or bloggers who have “pinked” their avatars/profile images. And if you had seen it, but had no idea why, this book and these authors are why.

It was the pink that first drew me to this book. I had been following the authors on Twitter and had the book on my TBR on Goodreads but only really took note of their book after all the pinked hairdos started cropping up. Everywhere.

I did not have this on my list of DAC picks, but it is one I will definitely be reading. And it just recently became available for the Kindle so of course I ordered it.

The premise is fun – how many characters get email messages from the deceased – and mysterious. This is another great release to start off March the right way!

If you’d like to watch the trailer for this book, check out my post for March trailers here, which includes the trailers for some other March releases.

The Vespertine by author Saundra Mitchell will be released in the U.S. on March 7, 2011 in hardcover and eBook formats. (Although Amazon has been shipping out the print versions for over a week now, at least. I got mine last Monday.)

It is available for pre-order from Amazon and Barnes & Noble in both formats.

Published by Harcourt Children’s Books the hardcover is 304 pages.

I was drawn to The Vespertine for its beautiful cover. Not typically the type of book I would read – historical fiction – there was something about the plot that made me want to read this. Secrets, prophecies and forbidden romance all make for a very intriguing tale.

I received an eARC for this book which I’ll be reviewing this week, and also have the hardcover which I bought from Amazon simply to see if they’d really send it pre-release. I am also pre-ordered for the Kindle version. So, yes. I do want to read this book.

One Hundred Candles by Mara Purnhagen came out on February 15, 2011 in paperback in the U.S. I’m including it here this week as the eBook, which is available for pre-order from Amazon and Barnes & Noble, is releasing on March 1st and that’s the version I’ve opted to purchase.

Published by Harlequin TEEN, the paperback edition is 240 pages.

This book came out in paperback on February 15th, but not in eBook format. And, as I’ve only purchased the electronic version I’ve included it this week instead. If you are an eReader junkie like I am perhaps you’ve also waited until now to buy.

I have read this book as I had an eARC for review and it was my favorite of the series. While I completely enjoyed all the books, this one had just something extra and a dark ending that left me surprised, shocked and wanting more.

The link to the free eBook for the novella Raising the Dead which takes place just prior to this second book in the series can be found in my sidebar on the right.

If you’d like to read my review of One Hundred Candles or read the Goodreads description, click here.

Outside In is the second book in the series by Maria V. Snyder. It was released in paperback format on February 15, 2011 in the U.S., but the eBook format is releasing this week on March 1, 2011. It is now available for pre-order from both Amazon and Barnes & Noble.

Published by Harlequin TEEN, the paperback is 336 pages.

Outside In is another book that released earlier in paperback format than in electronic format. But as I have only purchased the eBook version it is included in this week’s Book Watch: Releasing This Week post.

I was fortunate to have received an eARC of the book prior to its release, and have already read and reviewed this book. But I am still adding the finished copy to my collection as I thoroughly enjoyed this series.

This is the second book in the series and it has a lot more action than the first book, although that one is still my favorite of the two.

If you have read the first book you will definitely want to read this, and if you haven’t read Inside Out then you should. It is part dystopian novel, part mystery and part sci-fi. And if you’re not a fan of science fiction, don’t worry, there is only a hint of it in the story.

If you would like to read my review, get links to an excerpt or read the Goodreads description, click here.
