The Extras: June

Back with another “Extras” post. As some of you may already know…

Whenever I find either a legal free download, an excerpt or sneak peek of a book online, I try to link to it in a related post or include the link in my sidebar (to your right).

But once a month I’ll pop them into a post for a “one-stop shop” with a brief description. You may have previously seen some of these in my sidebar and one or two may still be lingering, well here they are once more in case you missed them. (My sidebar tends to have a LOT of info.)

We have a few peeks at upcoming releases, just released books and some of them are just items that have been offered for free for awhile but you might have missed.

And yes, I know it’s not June yet, but it’s a monthly post that I do around this time each month in anticipation.

Imaginary Girls by Nova Ren Suma will be released on June 14, 2011.

I love this cover and think it is beautiful and so captivating. The colors are just amazing. But apparently the story is dark and haunting, in stark contract to this bright and vivid cover.

I haven’t yet read the sample chapters, as I don’t want to have to stop reading this book once I start, but I can’t wait until it’s released in June.

Scribd is giving readers a peek at the first four chapters, HERE.

The Strange Case of Finley Jayne by Kady Cross was released on May 1, 2011. It is a prequel novella to The Girl in the Steel Corset which will be released on May 24th in hardcover format and as an eBook on June 1st.

It is being offered as a free eBook download from Amazon and Barnes & Noble.

Of course I downloaded both versions for my eReaders. I’m excited to get a peek at the story prior to the full-length novel’s release.

I will be reading this eBook just prior to reading The Girl in the Steel Corset and can’t wait to find out more about the world the author creates in this steampunk novel.

I think the cover for The Girl in the Steel Corset is absolutely stunning and is what drew me to the book in the first place.

Starcrossed by Josephine Angelini will be released on May 31, 2011.

I am really excited to read this book and have refrained from checking out the excerpt as I also want to read this in full.

This is another book with an absolutely gorgeous cover. And it seems like a lifetime since I’ve read a book about Greek mythology, so I’m really looking forward to start reading this one.

Yet again, the awesome HarperTeen is giving readers a long look inside at the first 99 pages HERE.

Graveminder by Melissa Marr will be released on May 17, 2011.

Author Melissa Marr has written a creepy and disturbing-sounding novel in Graveminder and I cannot wait to read it. Graveminder is not a young adult title, but I’m not a young adult so it’s perfect.

Even this cover is super creepy. And I did check out the excerpt and now really can’t wait until this comes out next week.

The publisher, William Morrow, is giving readers a look inside, HERE.

Daimon by Jennifer L. Armentrout was released on April 19, 2011. It is a prequel novella to the author’s upcoming book Half-Blood which will be releasing on September 15, 2011.

This is an amazing book and leads right into the full-length novel. Daimon is not one of those short eBooks that just tease you with a few pages. This has a real storyline that gives you a great sense of the characters and even gives you a peek at the beginning of full-length book.

As of May 10th, the folks at Spencer Hill Press have made this available for free download in multiple formats. CLICK HERE to download.

***

And for one more chance to take a peek, here are a few books that are available now.

Illusions by Aprilynne Pike was released on May 3, 2011. It is the third book in the Wings series.

I adore this series. It’s sweet and fun and has a love triangle that will drive you mad.

I don’t recommend reading this excerpt if you haven’t read the first two books in the series. But if you have, it gives you a nice peek.

The folks at HarperTeen are giving readers a chance to look inside, HERE.

Divergent by Veronica Roth was released on May 3, 2011 and is the debut novel for the author.

I can’t wait to start reading this book as it’s had such high praise. I have not checked out the excerpt as I do own the book, which I will be reading soon.

As always, HarperTeen is offering a peek inside, HERE.

The Last Little Blue Envelope by Maureen Johnson was released on April 26, 2011.

This book is a great follow-up to 13 Little Blue Envelopes and continues the story a few months after the first book ends.

HarperTeen is giving readers a sneak peek HERE.

(I just love HarperTeen’s Browse Inside section on their site and stalk it regularly.)

Summer and the City by Candace Bushnell was released on April 26, 2011.

I have not checked out this young adult series by the author, but I know it’s quite popular and I think this cover is adorable. What girl doesn’t want a quilted, pink clutch purse?

Once again, HarperTeen is offering a look inside at the first 99 pages HERE.

The Gathering by Kelley Armstrong was released on April 12, 2011.

This is a new series by the author in the same world as her Darkest Powers series which will, at some point, cross over with that one. I can’t wait. I loved that series and am really enjoying this new one.

An excerpt is available on the author’s website, HERE.

The publisher is offering a longer excerpt on their website. CLICK HERE to read.

Born at Midnight by C.C. Hunter was released on March 29, 2011. It is the first book in her new Shadow Falls series.

I think this is a great new series by this author. I can’t wait until the second book, Awake at Dawn, comes out this fall – in October.

For those who have read it and want to check out some deleted scenes, CLICK HERE.

I don’t recommend reading it if you haven’t yet read the book.

Turned at Dark by C.C. Hunter was released on March 15, 2011. It is a bonus story in the Shadow Falls series.

What I like about this prequel novella is that it gives you a peek at a secondary character from the series, Della, and the events leading up to her arriving in Shadow Falls.

It’s a nice, quick read and you don’t have to have read Born at Midnight to enjoy it.

It is currently available as a free eBook download from Amazon. To download, CLICK HERE.

Fallen From Grace by M.J. Putney was released on March 15, 2011 and is a bonus Dark Mirror short story.

I haven’t yet read Dark Mirror so I’m not certain whether this can be read without having read the full-length book. I own both books, but to be on the safe side, I’ll be reading the full-length novel first.

It is currently being offered as a free eBook download from Amazon and Barnes & Noble.

It’s a freebie, so of course I had to download and can’t wait to check it out.

Book Watch: Releasing This Week #13

Below are the YA books coming out this week that I am spotlighting for my Book Watch: Releasing This Week post.

These are books for the week of March 29th-April 4th that I have pre-ordered.

Entwined is the debut novel for author Heather Dixon. It will be releasing on Tuesday, March 29, 2011 in the U.S. in hardcover, audio and eBook formats. It is currently available for pre-order at Amazon and Barnes & Noble in all formats.

Published by Greenwillow Books, a division of HarperCollins, the print edition is 480 pages.

Entwined is one of the books that can be chosen for the 2011 Debut Author Challenge hosted by Kristi at TheStorySiren.com.

I saw this cover a few months ago and thought it was so pretty. I hadn’t been aware that it was one of the books available for the DAC but I’m glad to support a debut author with my purchase.

It sounds so much like a good old-fashioned fairytale with magic, romance, elaborate balls and of course someone trapped for centuries in a palace.

I haven’t read any reviews on this book, but look forward to reading it some time in May.

To read a sneak peek from HarperTeen CLICK HERE.

Born at Midnight is the debut young adult novel for author C.C. Hunter and the first book in the new Shadow Falls series. It will be released in the U.S. on Tuesday, March 29, 2011 in paperback and eBook formats. It is currently available online for pre-order in both formats at Amazon and Barnes & Noble.

Published by St. Martin’s Griffin, the print edition is 416 pages.

Born at Midnight is one of the books that can be chosen for the 2011 Debut Author Challenge hosted by Kristi at TheStorySiren.com.

If you’ve visited my blog before you’ll know that I’ve already read and reviewed this book and included it as part of my “Book Watch” spotlight posts. I won’t put all that info here, again, but links are below if you want to check them out.

The “Book Watch” post includes the Goodreads description, trailer and link to the author’s website – CLICK HERE.

If you’d like to read my review, CLICK HERE.

There is a prequel novella called Turned at Dark which is available as a free eBook download at Amazon. Link is in my sidebar. If you’d like to read my review for Turned at Dark, click here.

I’ve said it before but this was a great read and one I can’t wait to own the final copy of on Tuesday. The next book in the series, Awake at Dawn, will be out in October of this year.

Also be sure to check out the author’s website for extras, news and contests – www.cchunterbooks.com.

Fury of the Phoenix is the second book in the Kingdom of Xia series by Cindy Pon. It will be released in the U.S. on Tuesday, March 29, 2011 in hardcover and eBook formats. Both formats are available online for pre-order at Amazon and Barnes & Noble.

Published by Greenwillow Books, a division of HarperCollins, the print edition is 368 pages.

I haven’t yet read the first book in the series, but discovered this series through other bloggers online who have talked about the book in their IMM vlogs. I was really taken with the beauty of the cover for the first book, Silver Phoenix, and so I decided to order it online. I haven’t yet had a chance to read it, but had this second book in the series on my personal watch list and have it on pre-order for Tuesday.

All I can say is that this series sounds pretty epic. In the first book the main character is unwanted, has brought shame on her family and is being pursued by an evil force. In this upcoming book there is “brutal danger, haunting revelations, and new friendships, but also the premonition of a very real and terrifying threat.” So, I am really excited to begin this series and to discover a new author.

I think the trailer for this book is pretty cool, so I’ve included it, below.

Book trailer for Fury of the Phoenix:

Wake Unto Me is the debut young adult novel for author Lisa Cach. It will be releasing on Thursday, March 31, 2011 in the U.S. in paperback and eBook formats. It is available online for pre-order at Amazon and Barnes & Noble in both formats.

Published by Speak, a division of Penguin Group, the print edition is 304 pages.

Wake Unto Me is one of the books that can be chosen for the 2011 Debut Author Challenge hosted by Kristi at TheStorySiren.com.

I don’t know too much about this book from author Lisa Cach. But I had read the description on Goodreads and it sounds like something very different from what I normally read so I want to give it a peek. Yes, I’ve read books about girls in boarding schools before, but never in French boarding schools! Plus, this is in a castle and there is a ghostly love interest, haunting nightmares and vivid dreams that are definitely not nightmares.

This author has written a number of romance novels for adults, so it will be interesting to see how much she pushes the boundaries in this young adult debut.

There is a mystery in Wake Unto Me and this is one I just can’t wait to solve. If April isn’t too crazy I hope to read it mid-month.

To read an excerpt from the prologue and first chapter on the author’s website, CLICK HERE.

***

So, I don’t seem to have too many books on pre-order this week. (Actually I’m kind of relieved as I got myself into a whirlwind book trade today.) I’m sure I’ll discover someone’s blog toward the end of the week with books that have released and will find one or two that I haven’t yet purchased. But these are the ones that I’ve had on order.

As always, I would love to hear what you’re hoping to add to your collection this week!

Quickie Review: Turned at Dark

Turned at Dark is a bonus short story in the Shadow Falls series by author C.C. Hunter. It was released in eBook format only on March 15, 2011 in the U.S. It is currently available at Amazon for free download.

It is published by St. Martin’s Griffin (a division of Macmillan).

[stextbox id=”custom” big=”true”]

Goodreads description:

Independent and strong-willed Della Tsang hadn’t believed in ghosts until she saw her dead cousin darting into the shadows of an alley. She hadn’t believed in vampires until in the dark of that same night she is turned into one.

Introduced to a strange world of supernaturals, she struggles to accept this new reality. Unfortunately, the boy she loves senses something different about her and can’t accept her.

Should she follow her vampire cousin’s lead–walk away from everything she’s knows and loves—and fake her own death? Or should she set her pride aside and ask for help from the camp leader of Shadow Falls—a camp where supernaturals go to learn how to cope with their powers.

Either way, her life as she knows it, will never be the same.

[/stextbox]

In Born at Midnight we meet Della Tsang, Kylie Galen’s vampire roommate at Shadow Falls camp. But Della wasn’t always a vampire. This is her story.

***

Turned at Dark is a quick, fun and at times humorous short story about how Della became a vampire and how she ended up at Shadow Falls. It is a prequel to the full length book, Born at Midnight, which will be releasing in two weeks.

This is a great way to introduce this new series, get a feel for the author’s writing style and meet one of the more interesting characters from Born at Midnight. And it will give readers the opportunity to learn a little more about Della and why she acts as she does.

As this is releasing prior to the first book, it can obviously be read without having read Born at Midnight, although I’m glad I read it afterward. I already liked Della – she is one of my favorite characters – and was therefore much more interested in hearing about her transformation than I might have been had I not previously been introduced.

The Turned at Dark eBook includes a sneak peek of Born at Midnight.

Reviewer gives this book

C.C. Hunter’s debut young adult novel, Born at Midnight will be releasing on March 29, 2011 in the U.S.

Book Watch: Born at Midnight

Born at Midnight is author C.C. Hunter’s debut Young Adult novel. It will be released in the U.S. on March 29, 2011 and is available online for pre-order at Amazon in paperback and eBook formats and as a paperback at Barnes & Noble.

Published by St. Martin’s Griffin, the print edition is 416 pages.

Born at Midnight is one of the books that can be chosen for the 2011 Debut Author Challenge hosted by Kristi at TheStorySiren.com.

***

I know I’ve already read and reviewed this book, but this is definitely a book to look for on March 29th and so I’ve chosen it for this week’s “Book Watch” post. Although I had a review copy of this book, I have this on pre-order so I can have the final version for my eBook collection.

This is the first book in a new series, so there will be a lot of adventures to come and mysteries to solve. Each chapter ends with a mini cliffhanger so you have to keep flipping those pages or you will be left hanging.

As this takes place, for the most part, at a paranormal camp, there are a wide variety of paranormal characters with differing abilities. And as there are two love interests, you will have to choose which boy is right for Kylie. I’m definitely thinking Lucas, but who knows what will happen in book two.

I love the cover for this book. It’s dark, mysterious, beautiful and purple.

The second book in the series, Awake at Dawn, will be out in October, so the wait won’t be too long. And a prequel novella, Turned at Dark, will be released before Born at Midnight, on March 15th. (This may be a new release date for the novella.)

I am definitely looking forward to reading the final version when it comes out at the end of the month.

Goodreads description:

One night Kylie Galen finds herself at the wrong party, with the wrong people, and it changes her life forever.  Her mother ships her off to Shadow Falls—a camp for troubled teens, and within hours of arriving, it becomes painfully clear that her fellow campers aren’t just “troubled.”  Here at Shadow Falls, vampires, werewolves, shapeshifters, witches and fairies train side by side—learning to harness their powers, control their magic and live in the normal world.

Kylie’s never felt normal, but surely she doesn’t belong here with a bunch of paranormal freaks either.  Or does she?  They insist Kylie is one of them, and that she was brought here for a reason.  As if life wasn’t complicated enough, enter Derek and Lucas.  Derek’s a half-fae who’s determined to be her boyfriend, and Lucas is a smokin’ hot werewolf with whom Kylie shares a secret past.  Both Derek and Lucas couldn’t be more different, but they both have a powerful hold on her heart.

Even though Kylie feels deeply uncertain about everything, one thing is becoming painfully clear—Shadow Falls is exactly where she belongs…

The Extras: March

Whenever I find either a legal free download, an excerpt or sneak peek of a book online, I try to link to it in a related post or include the link in my sidebar (to your right).

But once a month I’ll pop them into a post for a “one-stop shop” with a brief description. In an attempt to clear out my sidebar this month I’m adding a few of the oldies here to give you one last chance to grab them.

We have a few peeks at upcoming releases, just released books and some of them are just items that have been offered for free for awhile but you might have missed. Who doesn’t enjoy a nice sneak peek or freebie now and again?

And yes, I know it’s not March yet and I only have one excerpt from a March release (many of the March release excerpts are in the sidebar), but it’s a monthly post and when I did February’s I missed a whole bunch of February freebies, so here it is a week earlier than planned.

Karsten Knight’s upcoming debut novel Wildefire will be releasing on July 26, 2011. Simon & Schuster has an excerpt from this amazing book on their site.

First lines: Ashline Wilde was a human mood ring. Sixteen years old, and she was a cauldron of emotions—frothing, bubbling, and volatile. She had never heard of “bottling it all up inside.” She was as transparent as the air itself.

Desires of the Dead is the second book in the Body Finder series. It was released this week on February 15th. If you haven’t started the series or you want to see if it’s worth a read, check out this nice, long excerpt from the folks at Harper Collins.

I have not yet read it, as I have both books in my TBR pile, but I will be starting them soon, but this peek is 70 pages and is way more than a teaser.

Born at Midnight by C.C. Hunter is the first book in her new young adult series due out on March 29, 2011. Macmillan has a short excerpt on their site if you want to learn more about what is going on in Shadow Falls.

This is an amazing book in what is already a highly addictive series. And yes, I am totally Team Lucas.

Secrets and Shadows, the second book in the 13 to Life series was released just this week on February 15th.

If you haven’t yet started, this short peek from Macmillan will either tide you over or tease you so much that you’ll just have to start reading. The excerpt includes the prologue and part of the first chapter.

Teaser line: A muzzle flash tears at the inky night again and she tumbles to the earth, falling limp.

Infinite Days by Rebecca Maizel was released in August 2010. If you haven’t yet heard of or read this book, check out the short excerpt that the folks at Macmillan (St. Martin’s Griffin) have available.

I have wanted to read this book forever but have been waiting until it’s an eBook and just discovered this very moment that it now is, FINALLY. Having just read this excerpt I think I’m going to have to readjust my TBR pile to move this very close to the top.

Lines to die for:

“Throughout all my histories, I found no one I loved more than you…no one.”

Those were some of Rhode’s last words to me. The last time he would pronounce his love. The last time I would see his face.

The Vampire Diaries: The Return: Nightfall is available to read online free in its entirety from HarperTeen. It was released in March 2010 and is the first of the Return books. The Return: Midnight will be out this March.

Reaper is a novella in the Soul Screamers series by Rachel Vincent. If you haven’t downloaded it by now, I’d be very surprised, but just in case, as I’m taking it off the sidebar, here it is for free download from HarlequinTEEN.

You can still download it free at Amazon and Barnes & Noble.

The Iron Witch is the debut novel and the first in a wonderful new series by author Karen Mahoney. If you haven’t yet had a chance to check it out, now’s the time, as Flux has a great excerpt.
