Title: NAMELESS
Author: Jennifer Jenkins
Release date: October 6, 2015
Publisher: Month9Books, LLC
Pages: 336
Formats: Paperback, eBook

Description…

Four clans have been at war for centuries: the Kodiak, the Raven, the Wolf and the Ram. Through brutal war tactics, the Ram have dominated the region, inflicting death and destruction on their neighbors.

Seventeen-year-old Zo is a Wolf and a Healer who volunteers to infiltrate the Ram as a spy on behalf of the allied clans. She offers herself as a Ram slave, joining the people who are called the “nameless.” Hers is a suicide mission – Zo’s despair after losing her parents in a Ram raid has left her seeking both revenge and an end to her own misery. But after her younger sister follows her into Rams Gate, Zo must find a way to survive her dangerous mission and keep her sister safe.

What she doesn’t expect to find is the friendship of a young Ram whose life she saves, the confusing feelings she develops for a Ram soldier, and an underground nameless insurrection. Zo learns that revenge, loyalty and love are more complicated than she ever imagined in the first installment of this two-book series.

NOTE: This review is based on an eARC received from the publisher in exchange for my honest thoughts about the book.

The Review

Electrifying and intense and instantly and completely captivating, NAMELESS is one of those reads that will make you race through the pages to find out what’s going to happen next. With a fascinating new world to discover, one that is primitive, harsh, brutal, and intriguing new characters to meet who are fierce and determined and deadly, some of whom are cruel and others who are compassionate, you will be immediately pulled into the story and you’ll never want the journey to end.

Zo was determined to help the Allies, even if it meant sacrificing herself. While she knew she might be able to get beyond the wall of Ram’s Gate, she held out no hope of getting back out. But it would be worth it if she could discover anything about her enemy that could be used to help take them down.

She was the Allies’ best chance of getting inside. Her abilities as a Healer would hopefully make her useful enough to the Ram to keep her alive long enough to fulfill her mission. And it might have worked.

If only she hadn’t let her rage blind her, she would have known that the two people who cared most about her wouldn’t let her go so easily. While she was more than willing to risk her own life to avenge her parents’ deaths, she would never have risked her sister Tess’s life or her best friend Gabe’s.

Now with something to lose she’d have to be careful. She couldn’t take any unnecessary chances. She couldn’t risk being discovered as anything other than one of the nameless. And she’d have to find a way to do the impossible – to get herself and her sister back over the wall.

Jennifer Jenkins immerses readers into her story right from the start. There is no long lead up to Zo putting her plan into action. There is no lengthy backstory to slow the pace. She brings the action, the suspense, the intrigue from the get-go.

She keeps readers riveted by making them curious to know more about the nameless, more about what made Zo so vengeful, what made the Ram so aggressive, how they got so powerful, whether Zo will succeed or if she’ll fail. She lets her story unfold from not just Zo’s perspective, but from that of another incredibly appealing character, Gryphon, who is brave, powerful, loyal, determined, but also merciful and conflicted.

And she introduces a heartfelt romance that is not of the “insta-love” variety, she builds the foundation for a much expanded world in later books in the series, she teases bits and pieces of information about the other clans, and she reveals hidden plots, sympathizers, and allies, making for an interesting and engaging and unputdownable read.

NAMELESS is powerful and surprising and unexpected. It tackles a number of issues that mirror real-life issues that have arisen throughout the history of the world – starvation, genocide, enslavement, sacrifice, the cost of retaliation, doing whatever it takes to survive. It explores the many facets of human nature. It shows opposing perspectives, giving readers a more complete picture in order that they might be more understanding and sympathetic.

It has a number of strong characters that are immensely likable. It’s set in a world that is cold-blooded, severe, ruthless but still allows for kindness and beauty. It’s a story that is beautiful and breathtaking and one that is absolutely not to be missed.

The Poison Study Covers

The Scavenger Hunt Excerpt

…From Chapter Two

With some trepidation, I took a sip, again detecting the faint orange taste.  Bracing myself for the rancid flavor, I gargled Valek’s drink and was relieved that it only enhanced the orange essence.

“Better?” Valek asked as he took back the empty cup.

“Yes.”

Valek sat down behind his desk, opening my folder once more. Picking up his quill, he talked to me while writing.  “You just had your first lesson in food tasting.  Your drink was laced with a poison called Butterfly’s Dust.  Mine wasn’t.  The only way to detect Butterfly’s Dust in a liquid is to gargle it.  That rotten orange flavor you tasted was the poison.”

I rose, my head spinning.  “Is it lethal?”

“A big enough dose will kill you in two days.  The symptoms don’t arrive until the second day, but by then it’s too late.”

“Did I have a lethal dose?”  I held my breath.

“Of course.  Anything less and you wouldn’t have tasted the poison.”

My stomach rebelled and I started to gag.  I forced down the bile in my throat, trying hard to avoid the indignity of vomiting all over Valek’s desk.

Valek looked up from the stack of papers.  He studied my face.  “I warned you the training would be dangerous.  But I would hardly give you a poison your body had to fight while you suffered from malnutrition.  There is an antidote to Butterfly’s Dust.”  He showed me a small vial containing a white liquid.

Sinking back into my chair, I sighed deeply.  Valek’s metal face had returned; I realized he hadn’t offered the antidote to me.

“In answer to the question you didn’t ask but should have, this…”  Valek raised the small vial and shook it, “…is how we keep the Commander’s food taster from escaping.”

I stared at him, trying to understand the implication.

“Yelena, you confessed to murder.  We would be fools to let you serve the Commander without some guarantees.  Guards watch the Commander at all times and it is unlikely you would be able to reach him with a weapon.  For other forms of retaliation, we use Butterfly’s Dust.”  Valek picked up the vial of antidote, and twirled it in the sunlight.  “You need a daily dose of this to stay alive.  The antidote keeps the poison from killing you.  As long as you show up each morning in my office, I will give you the antidote.  Miss one morning and you’ll be dead by the next.  Commit a crime or an act of treason and you’ll be sent back to the dungeon until the poison takes you.  I would avoid that fate, if I were you.  The poison causes severe stomach cramps, and uncontrollable vomiting.”

Before full comprehension of my situation could sink in, Valek’s eyes slid past my shoulder.  I turned to see a stout woman in a housekeeper’s uniform opening the door.  Valek introduced her as Margg, the person that would take care of my basic needs.  Expecting me to follow her, Margg strode quickly out the door.

I glanced at the vial on Valek’s desk.

About Maria V. Snyder

Maria

Maria V. Snyder changed from being a meteorologist to a novelist in 1995, when she began writing to keep her sanity while raising two children. Since then, she has published numerous freelance articles in magazines and newspapers, and teaches fiction-writing classes at the local college and area libraries. The classes give her the wonderful opportunity to encourage fellow writers, and to keep improving her craft.

Born and raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Maria always had a fascination with big storms. Dreaming of chasing tornados, Maria earned a bachelors of science degree in meteorology at Penn State University. But she discovered, much to her chagrin, that forecasting the weather wasn’t one of her skills. In order to chase tornados you had to predict where they might form. Creating fantasy worlds where she has complete control of the weather was more agreeable to her.

Maria’s research on food-tasting methods with an expert chocolate taster, her husband, turned out to be a delicious bonus while writing Poison Study.

Maria has a brown belt in Isshinryu Karate, and enjoys playing volleyball and the cello. Traveling in general and via cruise ship in particular are her biggest distractions from writing. Maria has traveled to Belize, Canada, China, Costa Rica, Europe, Mexico, the Caribbean and through the Panama Canal.

Maria lives with her husband, son, daughter and yellow lab, Hazelnut, in Pennsylvania where she is at work on more LUNA novels. She is also pursuing a master’s degree in writing popular fiction from Seton Hill University.

NOTE: This review is based on an eARC received from the publisher via Edelweiss in exchange for my honest thoughts about the book.

The Review

THE WHITE ROSE is fast-paced, exciting, gripping, and tension-filled. It picks up the story right where it left off after a cliffhanger ending that can only be called killer. It takes readers and characters alike on a nail-biting journey through other parts of the Lone City, reveals things about the surrogates and the royals that were previously unknown, sets the stage for an uprising, uncovers a sinister plan, and answers all those burning questions about the Auguries.

It is a sequel that delivers even more action than its predecessor. It’s a bit darker and more intriguing. It offers up details about the world, its history, its powers. It introduces new characters. It takes the story in a new direction. It is surprising, and fascinating, and immensely entertaining. It’s a suspenseful, edge-of-your-seat read that’s totally unputdownable.

Forced to flee the Jewel, Violet will have to put her trust in an unexpected ally if she wants to have any chance of making it to safety. She was supposed to have traveled alone but there was no way she was going to leave her friends behind. Even if it put her, put them all, in greater danger.

With no idea where she’s heading, or what she’s supposed to do once she gets there, Violet begins to question whether she made the right choice. But if the alternative is staying with the Duchess of the Lake, remaining property, being known only as Lot 197, facing the very real possibility of death, she doesn’t think she did choose wrong.

Even without a guarantee of safety, or freedom, or victory, the possibility of them all is worth every risk. She’ll just have to keep reminding herself of that fact when the Regimentals get too close, when the wanted posters plastered throughout every circle limit their chances of going undetected, when she learns what it is that’s expected of her.

Amy Ewing did an incredible job expanding on her story with this sequel, opening it up to new possibilities, exploring the history of the Lone City, sharing its darkest secrets, revealing the source of the Auguries’ power, changing up the setting, giving it a more focused purpose. She introduces some changes to her characters, making some more sympathetic, others stronger, others weaker, and others even more heartless than they’d been. She picks up the pace, ratchets up the danger, and adds in a number of surprises, producing a story that is absolutely riveting.

THE WHITE ROSE is a must for fans of the series, for readers who enjoy sequels that have substance, move the plot forward, improve upon the original, and that continue to astonish, thrill, enthrall. And with a jaw-dropping and somewhat abrupt ending, it will leave readers desperately awaiting the next installment.

Description…

The Jewel means wealth. The Jewel means beauty. The Jewel means royalty. But for girls like Violet, the Jewel means servitude. Not just any kind of servitude. Violet, born and raised in the Marsh, has been trained as a surrogate for the royalty—because in the Jewel the only thing more important than opulence is offspring.

Purchased at the surrogacy auction by the Duchess of the Lake and greeted with a slap to the face, Violet (now known only as #197) quickly learns of the brutal truths that lie beneath the Jewel’s glittering facade: the cruelty, backstabbing, and hidden violence that have become the royal way of life.

Violet must accept the ugly realities of her existence… and try to stay alive. But then a forbidden romance erupts between Violet and a handsome gentleman hired as a companion to the Duchess’s petulant niece. Though his presence makes life in the Jewel a bit brighter, the consequences of their illicit relationship will cost them both more than they bargained for.
