DESTROY ME by Tahereh Mafi was released in the U.S. on October 2, 2012 in eBook format only. It is currently available to order online at AMAZON and BARNES &  NOBLE.

Published by HarperCollins, the story is 103 pages.

DESTROY ME is a novella in the author’s Shatter Me series set between SHATTER ME and UNRAVEL ME.

Line_001

Description…

Perfect for the fans of Shatter Me who are desperately awaiting the release of Unravel Me, this novella-length digital original will bridge the gap between these two novels from the perspective of the villain we all love to hate, Warner, the ruthless leader of Sector 45.

In Tahereh Mafi’s Shatter Me, Juliette escaped from The Reestablishment by seducing Warner—and then putting a bullet in his shoulder. But as she’ll learn in Destroy Me, Warner is not that easy to get rid of. . .

Back at the base and recovering from his near-fatal wound, Warner must do everything in his power to keep his soldiers in check and suppress any mention of a rebellion in the sector. Still as obsessed with Juliette as ever, his first priority is to find her, bring her back, and dispose of Adam and Kenji, the two traitors who helped her escape. But when Warner’s father, The Supreme Commander of The Reestablishment, arrives to correct his son’s mistakes, it’s clear that he has much different plans for Juliette. Plans Warner simply cannot allow.

Set after Shatter Me and before its forthcoming sequel, Unravel Me,Destroy Me is a novella told from the perspective of Warner, the ruthless leader of Sector 45.

Line_001

DESTROY ME is an eye-opening and incredibly entertaining novella told from Warner’s point of view. It picks up shortly after the climactic events that occur toward the end of SHATTER ME and continues through the early parts of the next book, UNRAVEL ME.

This exciting short story lets readers see Warner as someone other than the monster he appeared to be in that first book. It gives a glimpse into what his earlier life was like, how and when it all changed, what his existence has been shaped into due to his father’s influence and just how different he is from his outward persona.

It shows his human side, that he has a human side. And it reveals just how he feels about his father, his role as a leader, those he commands, his isolated existence… and Juliette.

This brief look at the story from Warner’s perspective brings to light just what Juliette really means to him, how important she is, how similar their pasts and how connected he is to her. It also sheds light on how cold-hearted and calculated his father is and to just what lengths he is willing to go.

DESTROY ME paints Warner as a character deserving of sympathy. It reveals someone who is very much in need of human contact, someone who is brave and yet fearful, kind but also cruel, and someone who may be unlovable but has the capacity to love.

For readers who are fans of the series, even if not of Warner, this story is a must. It can be enjoyed before or after having read UNRAVEL ME but it will be a much more enlightening story if read before that second book in the series. And for those who haven’t yet read UNRAVEL ME, this story will make them want to dive right in to find out just why getting to know Warner is so important.

DESTROY ME is fast-paced. It is surprising. And it’s more than a touch heartbreaking. Even though it’s not necessary to the story arc, it is necessary to gaining a better understanding of one of the series’ more important characters, one who has a significant role in UNRAVEL ME.

This short novella includes not only an excerpt of the first two chapters of UNRAVEL ME but an excerpt from Warner’s Files.

On a personal note…

I don’t know why it took me so long to read this novella. It was amazing. And if I were the type to use lots of exclamation points I wouldn’t need to utter another word, just fill the page with those slashes with dots at the end. But as I’m not….

I read UNRAVEL ME early, long before this story was released, and had been a Warner fan since the first book in the series. So not immediately devouring this novella affirms the fact that I am insane.

While I knew some of Warner’s feelings – as they were revealed in UNRAVEL ME – getting to know about them from him was so much better. And getting to know even more about what he thought about Juliette made me adore him all the more.

I loved learning about why he was first interested in Juliette. I loved learning the truth about his actions. I loved learning about what he thought about a certain journal. And I loved hearing about just how he was destroyed.

I could go on and on about the awesomeness that is Warner or how this short story broke my heart for him all over again. But I probably should keep my lips sealed just in case someone hasn’t yet read this novella or the second book in the series.

I’ll just say that this is unquestionably a must read. Even if you don’t love Warner. Yet. Or ever. Because it explains a lot. It will make you see certain events from both books in a different light. It is a story that gives you pages and pages of the author’s heart-achingly beautiful writing.

And maybe, just maybe, it will introduce you to a character who is redeemable.

Flirting with Maybe

addtogoodreads

FLIRTING WITH MAYBE by Wendy Higgins was released in the U.S. on March 5, 2013 in eBook format only. It is currently available to order online at AMAZON and BARNES & NOBLE.

Published by HarperTeen, the story is 92 pages.

Line_001

Description…

He was fifteen and she was seventeen.

When sophomore Ryan “The Kid” McPhearson makes the Varsity baseball team, he finds himself submersed into the life of upperclassmen, and falling in love with senior Brooke Bennet. To Ryan she’s his dream girl, perfect. Maybe to the outside world a two-year age difference doesn’t matter, but this is high school. Everything matters.

Ryan soon realizes Brooke’s life is not so perfect. He becomes her closest friend, her safe place to fall when she needs to escape. Ryan seems to be benched in the friend zone with no chance to bat.

Time is both a curse and a blessing. It ushers Brooke away to college, and Ryan into the arms of his first girlfriend. It alters Ryan from a kid to a high school graduate, ready to venture to college himself. But when Ryan sees Brooke again he realizes there are some things even time can’t touch.

Though much has changed, one question still remains. Will the things that mattered in high school always stand between them?

Line_001

FLIRTING WITH MAYBE is an absolutely delightful and heartwarming novella that follows the relationship of Ryan and Brooke as their friendship develops into the possibility of something more.

Told from Ryan’s point of view, this short story spans nearly three years, giving readers glimpses of significant moments in his life involving Brooke as he progresses from a shy high school sophomore to a more confident high school graduate.

It is a story that tests whether love can overcome any number of obstacles – age, appearances, friends, family, self-worth, distance – even when that love may be one-sided. And it puts it to the test time and time again as life takes Ryan and Brooke in different directions.

This novella is fun and flirty, but also bittersweet. It introduces a character who is outwardly shy but sure of himself and his feelings and one who appears in control but is actually a bit of an emotional mess, which makes for an exciting dynamic and makes this an incredibly engaging read.

While this is only a novella, the story feels complete and the characters are easy to connect with. The author gives readers enough of a peek into their lives to become attached and to feel invested in the outcome. And she keeps them riveted by taking them along on the emotional roller coaster ride she put her main character on.

For readers looking for a quick maybe love story that’s not only hopeful, light and sweet but substantive, FLIRTING WITH MAYBE is a must.

On a personal note…

What a sweet story. I loved getting to meet Ryan McPhearson, even if it was for only a short while. And although Brooke was so very flawed, I liked getting to know her too.

For a short story that spanned such a long time period, I thought the pacing was perfect and there were just the right number of peeks into Ryan’s life. I was immediately drawn into the story and made an instant connection with the main character.

What I liked most about this story were its characters. Neither was perfect, but the possibility for them to be perfect for each other made me hopeful for a happy ending.

And I liked that the author touched upon some very real issues involving body image, self-worth, alcoholism, broken families. It gave the story a bit more depth and its characters, as well.

Of course, I adored the love story, even if it was a bit of an unrequited one. Whether it ended up that way… well, I’ll never tell.

As much as I loved the novella, I would love to see this story fleshed out a bit more and made into a full-length novel. The story is there. The characters are there. And of course getting only a short peek at their lives makes me want to know more about them. But then I knew that would be the case when I decided to read this standalone contemporary.

Regardless, I definitely recommend FLIRTING WITH MAYBE. It’s a wonderful short story that gave me all sorts of smiles, with a main character I’m very glad I met.

Quickie Review: Glitter & Doom

Glitter and Doom

addtogoodreads

GLITTER & DOOM by Bethany Griffin was released in the U.S. on March 26, 2013 in eBook format only. It is currently available to order online at AMAZON and BARNES & NOBLE.

Published by Greenwillow Books, the story is 44 pages.

GLITTER & DOOM is a novella in the author’s Masque of the Red Death series set between MASQUE OF THE RED DEATH and DANCE OF THE RED DEATH.

Line_001

Description…

A 50-page, digital-only novella set in the world of Bethany Griffin’s dark and haunting retelling of the classic Edgar Allan Poe story Masque of the Red Death. When a rich teenage girl who spends her nights in the most desirable club and a smart, young inventor meet, they might have more in common than they know.

April, niece to the dying city’s cruel dictator, is Araby Worth’s glittery and frivolous best friend. But she’s more than she appears. And when she disappeared in Masque of the Red Death, where did she go? This short novella answers that question, taking us deep underneath the crumbling city, where April crosses paths with Kent, the serious young inventor who is key to rebellion. Glitter & Doom is a story of chilling action, of spies, and of surprising love. Can love be anything but doomed is a city that’s burning down around its survivors?

A dark, unnerving story about two of the most fascinating characters from Masque of the Red Death.

Line_001

GLITTER & DOOM is a captivating short novella told in two parts – Glitter, from April’s point of view and Doom, from Kent’s. It offers readers a peek at the world from two characters who play an important role in the series’ outcome and gives insight into events that take place outside of the main story but are integral to it.

This story allows readers to get to know both characters a little bit more, to see how they first met and to see just what parts they played in the events leading up to the climactic conclusion at the end of the first book, MASQUE OF THE RED DEATH. And it gives them a few more reasons to detest both Prospero and Malcontent.

Glitter let’s readers see how April and Elliott became the people they were when they are first introduced in book one. It reveals a moment from their earlier lives that is both horrifying and heartbreaking. It shows a different side of April than the one most often seen through Araby’s point of view. And it doing so, it makes her a much more relatable character.

Doom gives readers Kent’s backstory and let’s them make a stronger connection to a character who only plays a supporting role in the novels. It let’s readers see what his motivations are and why he feels the way he does. And by getting this short peek at his history and his early encounters with April, he becomes a much more three-dimensional character than he is in the novels.

GLITTER & DOOM is a quick but riveting read that will offer up a different reading experience depending upon whether it is read prior to the final book in the series or after, though it can be read either before or after DANCE OF THE RED DEATH. It is both a heartwarming and bittersweet story that delivers danger, excitement, suspense and romance in each of its two parts.

And while not essential to an overall enjoyment of the series, the stories and characters in GLITTER & DOOM add quite a bit to it, making it a must read for fans.

This novella also includes a short excerpt of Chapter One from DANCE OF THE RED DEATH.

Reviewer gives this novella…

Rate05

On a personal note…

I had no idea when I picked up GLITTER & DOOM that it was two short stories from April and Kent’s points of view. I thought it was only April’s story. When I found out that it was both of their stories I was even more eager… and anxious… to read it.

Though I can’t say why that is. But those who read DANCE OF THE RED DEATH will know exactly what I’m talking about… or why I can’t say anything about how I felt when reading this novella.

I have always thought April was awesome. And reading her short story and reading about her in Kent’s made her even more so. She was brave. Fearless. Clever. And seeing her with Kent in the scenes in this novella makes me wish for an entire novel from her point of view.

And I loved seeing a younger Elliott, even though what happened was absolutely devastating. I loved getting to see those tiny glimpses of Will. I loved getting to see what April thought of Araby. And I loved the fact that this novella made me absolutely adore a character I hadn’t paid much attention to in the novels – Kent.

What I most loved, however, is the thing I can’t talk about. Though I suppose it wouldn’t be too revealing to say that because I read this after the series ended, I made a much stronger emotional connection to the story than I would have had I read it prior to reading DANCE OF THE RED DEATH.

While I normally am a proponent of reading things in order, I’m glad I read it out of sequence. It felt like a much more important story than it might have if I hadn’t known how things ended for all this series’ main characters.

Even though this was such a short novella, the author managed to break my heart a couple of times. Once in Glitter and once in Doom. And she made me fall in love with her series all over again.

I cannot recommend GLITTER & DOOM enough. This is a must, must, must read and a short story I must, must, must read again.

I am so unbelievably excited that today is the release day for STAR CURSED by Jessica Spotswood. I was only just recently introduced to the series and its characters, but it is now one of my very most favorites. I already cannot wait for the third book in this series to be released. And as I have no idea when it’s slated for release, the wait is going to be torturous.

I absolutely adore Cate Cahill and her sister Tess. I’m in love with the world. And I more than a little bit fond of Finn. The writing is gorgeous, the story is magical and the ending is…. Oops, I think I’ve said enough about that.

As I thought this book was more than amazing - I gave it my off-the-menu rating in my review - I wanted to offer up a couple copies for giveaway. And so that’s what I’m doing.

For those who haven’t yet read the description for this second book in the Cahill Witch Chronicles, I’ve included it below. Though, if you haven’t read BORN WICKED, you may want to skip right to the giveaway as it does contain some mild spoilers for that book.

STAR CURSED Description…

With the Brotherhood persecuting witches like never before, a divided Sisterhood desperately needs Cate to come into her Prophesied powers. And after Cate’s friend Sachi is arrested for using magic, a war-thirsty Sister offers to help her find answers—if Cate is willing to endanger everyone she loves.

Cate doesn’t want to be a weapon, and she doesn’t want to involve her friends and Finn in the Sisterhood’s schemes. But when Maura and Tess join the Sisterhood, Maura makes it clear that she’ll do whatever it takes to lead the witches to victory. Even if it means sacrifices. Even if it means overthrowing Cate. Even if it means all-out war.

In the highly anticipated sequel to Born Wicked, the Cahill Witch Chronicles continue Cate, Maura and Tess’s quest to find love, protect family, and explore their magic against all odds in an alternate history of New England.

POISON (Legacy #2) by Molly Cochran

About POISON

Arthurian legend mixes with modern-day witchcraft in this haunting sequel to Legacy, which Publishers Weekly said “should please the legions of paranormal fans looking for a sophisticated supernatural thriller.”

After the riveting—and romantic—events of Legacy, Katy has won Peter’s heart and is nowclaiming her place in the magical world. Though half the students at her boarding school come from witching lines, the use of magic is expressly forbidden at Ainsworth, so as to keep the witching world hidden from the blue-blooded preppies, aka Muffies, who also walk the halls.

But the Muffies have at least a notion of magic, because Katy catches them staging a made-up ritual—and to her astonishment, the girls collapse at Katy’s feet and fall into comas. When Katy is blamed, she becomes desperate to clear her name and finds herself battling all odds to harness her growing magical powers in order to save the Muffies and dispel the Darkness once more.

The Guest Post

Katy interviews Molly Cochran

Katy: Hi, Molly.

Molly: Hi, Katy.

Katy: This is the first time we’ve talked.

Molly: I didn’t think you knew I existed.

Katy: I didn’t. Well, sometimes I got the feeling that I was being watched.

Molly: I’m not just watching you. I created you.

Katy: Whoa, creep alert!

Molly: Sorry. So what did you want to ask me? Anything. I’ll answer.

Katy: Okay. What makes you think you know me?

Molly: I am you. That is to say, I’ve been through all the things you go through—

Katy: Hah! I suppose you’ve almost been burned at the stake!

Molly: No, but at times I’ve felt like everyone was against me… that no matter what I said, I couldn’t get anyone to understand me. Wasn’t that what the burning-at-the-stake business was really about?

Katy: I’ll bet you never flung a five-hundred-pound table at anyone, either.

Molly: Correct. But I’ve wanted to. You were the vehicle I used to get even with all the nasty people I’ve ever wanted to lash out at but was too powerless to try.

Katy: What a loser.

Molly: Maybe. Everybody feels like a loser sometimes. But if you think about why you feel like a loser, that changes everything. You go from being a loser to being a thinker. All writers start out as thinkers.

Katy: Whatever. Let me look at my notes. Oh, right. If you were an insect, what would you be?

Molly: A Katydid!

Katy: God, just how lame are you?

Molly: If you’re calling me God, I am. I’m your god. I can do anything I want with your life.

Katy: Is that why you write? To feel power?

Molly: No. I write because I have to. When I don’t write I begin to feel weird. Trapped.

Katy: Trapped?

Molly: This is how it is with me: Basically I feel like I was born in a cinderblock cell with no windows or doors. It’s gray and cold and the air is stale. All I have with me is a bottle of bubble juice.

So I blow a bubble, and . . . voila, I can see a universe inside! The bubble grows bigger and bigger, until it’s big enough for me to walk into it. And when I do, I find that suddenly I’m in Camelot. Or a monastery in Tibet. Or Atlantis . . .

Katy: Or Whitfield, Massachusetts, home to more witches than any other town in America?

Molly: Exactly. I get to live there for months, and sometimes years, getting to know the people who belong there and having adventures with them.

Katy: And then it’s over.

Molly: Alas. Those words “The End” are always the hardest goodbye. That’s when the bubble fades and vanishes, and everything inside it goes away.

Katy: Except for the book.

Molly: Yes. That’s my record of having been there. My souvenir.

Katy: So why did you choose this life? Why be a writer?

Molly: Because it’s the only way I can get inside that bubble.

Katy: Wow. And I live there all the time!

Molly: Lucky you.

Katy (checks notes again): If you died and got reincarnated, what would you like to come back as?

Molly: A fictional character. Preferably a major one who doesn’t get killed off in the early chapters.

Katy: A witch, maybe?

Molly: Definitely a witch, Katy.

Novella Reading Week Wraps Up!

Jun 17

NRW_400

Novella Reading Week has ended. Wow that went fast! I’d been debating making it a two-week event, but it seems that one week was the perfect length in order to get a few of those novellas read and not cause too much of a backup for those review books.

And I cannot thank Mindy of Magical Urban Fantasy Reads enough for co-hosting this event with me. It was nice to know that even if no one else took part in the challenge this past week, she was joining me in my quest to clear a few novellas off my TBR pile.

But she wasn’t the only one participating in Novella Reading Week! I am totally stoked that there were so many awesome readers joining us this past week. And I cannot wait to check out each and every one of the reviews.

Mindy and I will be gathering all the participants entries – from the Linky List and from the comments on our posts – and we’ll throw them into Random to choose the winners, which will be announced in our Novella Reading Week Begins posts on Tuesday.

I hope that you got a few novellas cleared off your piles and that at the one, or ones, you did read made it worth your while. And I can’t thank you all enough for joining this event and for sharing your thoughts about those novellas you did read.

div4

My Novella Reading Week…

While I didn’t get every novella read that I wanted to read, I did reach my goal of reading seven novellas for this challenge. I’d originally chosen five books to read for the challenge, but decided to aim for seven and I managed to read them all.

Though I would have liked to read the other five novellas I’d earmarked, I wouldn’t have been able to read all those stories and have any time left over to write reviews. So I stuck with just my seven initial picks.

And while I only posted reviews for four of the novellas I read, I did end up writing six reviews before the challenge officially ended and hope to finish writing the last one momentarily. The three remaining reviews will be posted on Tuesday and Wednesday as I have a blog tour scheduled for today.

The novellas I read for the challenge were…

UNDONE (Unbreakable #1.5) by Elizabeth Norris. (Review)

GLITTER & DOOM (Masque of the Red Death #1.5) by Bethany Griffin. (Review to post Tuesday)

DIE FOR HER (Die for Me #2.5) by Amy Plum. (Review)

RADIANT (Unearthly #2.5) by Cynthia Hand. (Review)

DESTROY ME (Shatter Me #1.5) by Tahereh Mafi. (Review in progress)

FLIRTING WITH MAYBE by Wendy Higgins (Review to post Wednesday)

ORIGINS: THE FIRE (Mila 2.0 #0.5) by Debra Driza. (Review)

So while it wasn’t a complete success, I do consider this past week a success. I read seven novellas I’ve been wanting to read – some for quite some time. I managed to fall in love with some of my favorite series all over again. And reading a couple of the novellas gave me the push I needed to finally be willing to say goodbye to those series. Which, for me, is a win.

div4

Your Novella Reading Week…

But enough about me. What about your novella reading week?

Did you read all the novellas you wanted to read this week? Did you read more than you’d planned? Or did you read fewer than anticipated?

Were the novellas you did read ones that you absolutely adored or were some more of a miss than a hit?

And, whether you read one or twenty-one, do you consider this a successful novella reading week for you?

If you’d like to share your thoughts, I’d love to know!

MILA 2 Origins of Fire

addtogoodreads

ORIGINS: THE FIRE by Debra Driza was released in the U.S. on January 8, 2013 in eBook format only. It is currently available to order online at AMAZON and BARNES & NOBLE.

Published by Katherine Tegen Books, the story is 15 pages.

ORIGINS: THE FIRE is a free eBook short story that includes the first seven chapters of MILA 2.0

Line_001

Description…

Heart-stopping and electric, MILA 2.0: Origins: The Fire contains a short prequel story and an excerpt to MILA 2.0, the first book in a riveting Bourne Identity–style trilogy by Debra Driza.

Mila can’t remember anything before the fire that took her father’s life. It’s normal to have some memory loss after traumatic events, but Mila doesn’t remember if she’s ever learned to ride a bike, or if she’s ever been in love. Nothing.

What she doesn’t know is that she isn’t supposed to remember—that she was built in a computer science lab and programmed to forget. Because if she remembers, she might discover her true identity.

The question is: If she relived the fire, what would she see?

Line_001

ORIGINS: THE FIRE offers readers a short introduction to the world of MILA 2.0 along with several chapters from the full-length novel. It is a teaser-length story that gives just a taste of the author’s writing and only hints at who Mila is. The context for this story itself is revealed in MILA 2.0.

It’s an engaging read that tells the tale of the fire that was an integral part of Mila’s memories. And it ends in a way that may be a bit of a surprise to those who haven’t yet “met” Mila or read the description for the novel.

Readers should not expect a novella-length story. It is simply a brief intro. But for those who have yet to purchase the full-length novel, it gives a nice long look at seven chapters from the book.

Set before the events in MILA 2.0, ORIGINS: THE FIRE can be enjoyed by both those who have read the book and those who have yet to read it.

On a personal note…

I really liked this short story. I found myself totally caught up in what was happening, so I was more than a little bit surprised when it ended so suddenly. Of course I wanted more!

I’d been alerted to the fact that it was so short before I started reading it, so I wasn’t as surprised as I would have been had I not known that most of the eBook was taken up with several chapters from MILA 2.0.

It was interesting reading it after having read MILA 2.0, knowing exactly what was going on. But I can imagine, if I read this story first, I would have wondered what the heck happened right there at the end.

I am glad that this was written and that I read it. It makes me even more sympathetic toward Mila and makes me wonder a little bit more about Mila’s mom. Though I won’t say why, as my questions about her are rather spoiler-y.

As this was such a short read, I won’t make my review any longer than it already is, but I will just say that the eBook offers readers a great short story and a nice long look at the full-length novel.

Jules Marchenoir is a revenant-an undead being whose fate forces him to sacrifice himself over and over again to save human lives. He’s spent the better part of the last century flirting his way through Paris, but when he met Kate Mercier, the heroine from Amy Plum’s Die for Me trilogy, he knew his afterlife had changed forever and he had found the love of his life. Until Kate fell for his best friend, Vincent. Now Jules is faced with an impossible decision: choosing between his loyal friend and a love truly worth dying for.

DIE FOR HER is a wildly entertaining and incredibly revealing novella in author Amy Plum’s Die for Me series told from Jules’ perspective. Released between books two and three, this short story takes a look at events from the first two books in the series from his POV and concludes at the same point in the story as UNTIL I DIE.

As it does parallel the story as told from Kate’s point of view, this novella should not be read prior to having read both previously released books. And as it reveals certain things that were hinted at in that second book, and which will likely come to light in IF I SHOULD DIE, it is best read prior to reading that third and final book in the series.

Jules is one of the author’s more charismatic characters. His charming and flirtatious behavior serve to make him one of the more likable characters in this series, even if at first glance he appears to be a bit shallow. But in this novella, readers will get to see a different side of Jules and will learn that there is more to him than what meets the eye.

This novella also gives readers an expanded look at the world as well as a look at it from an alternate viewpoint. It offers a quick look at events that couldn’t be explored from Kate’s perspective, insight into events where her POV may not have been the most accurate, and an eye-opening peek at scenes involving both Kate and Jules.

DIE FOR HER is not only a riveting read but a heartbreaking one. For fans of the series, and especially Jules, this story is not one to be missed. And for those readers who may not have picked up on the hints in UNTIL I DIE, reading this novella will make them want to go back for a second look.

As it doesn’t cover new ground or bridge a gap between novels, it’s not mandatory to read DIE FOR HER to complete the series. But for those readers who like to take a longer look at the world or who like to see another character’s views on what has transpired, this novella is a must.

And as it includes a short excerpt of chapter one from IF I SHOULD DIE, readers will get to continue the story right to the edge of a small cliff.

On a personal note…

Jules is my favorite male character in this series. While Vincent may have held the top spot in DIE FOR ME, I’ve always been fond of his ever flirty best friend Jules. But after having read UNTIL I DIE, Vincent was out and Jules was in.

So I was totally thrilled to be able to read this short novella from his perspective. And I was even more thrilled to find out that what I thought was going on with Jules wasn’t just  wishful thinking.

As a fan of this character, I couldn’t help but fall instantly in love with this story. It made me grin, it tore my heart out and it made me want to read an entire novel from his point of view. It also made me happy that I was right to adore him, that he wasn’t just a flirt, that he was so much more.

And I am so glad I read this before reading IF I SHOULD DIE. I would have been wondering if my suspicions were correct for the entire read until all was revealed. And not knowing Jules’ thoughts would have made for a completely different reading experience of that last book.

I don’t usually get all swoon-y over a novella. And I almost never fall madly in love with one. But it couldn’t be helped. This story was all sorts of awesome.

Description…

From New York Times bestselling author Cynthia Hand comes a riveting original novella (available only as an ebook) set in the world of the Unearthly series.

Clara is desperate to get away—from the memories that haunt her in Wyoming and the visions of a future she isn’t ready to face—and spending the summer in Italy with her best friend, Angela, should be the perfect escape. . . .

For as long as she can remember, Angela has been told that love is dangerous, that she must always guard her heart. But when she met a mysterious guy in Italy two years ago she was determined to be with him, no matter the costs. Now she must decide whether she can trust Clara with her secret, or if telling her the truth will risk everything she cares about.

Alternating between Angela and Clara’s perspectives, Radiant chronicles the unforgettable summer that will test the bounds of their friendship and change their lives forever.

RADIANT is a short novella that alternates between Clara and Angela’s points of view. Set in the summer between the events that took place in HALLOWED, the second book in the series, and those in BOUNDLESS, the final book, this story takes readers to Italy where they’ll learn just a little bit more about the mysterious boy from Angela’s past.

And because of the dual perspectives, readers will get to know Angela a little bit better, from her insecurities to her wariness about falling in love.

Even though RADIANT includes Clara’s point of view, it is Angela’s story and it is a bit of a love story. It reveals some weaknesses in Angela’s character as well as some of her vulnerabilities, developing her into someone who is more than a little bit selfish but also rather sympathetic.

A new character is introduced in this novella. Someone who this story makes clear will have a rather significant role to play in the final book in the series. Their presence and the questions they raise about events to come add mystery and suspense, making for an incredibly engaging read.

RADIANT leaves readers on the edge of a cliff with its parting line. And for those that haven’t yet read the final book in the series, they’ll want to dive right in to find out just what that one decision means for the story. For those that have, it will reveal the possibility of a very different outcome had a different decision been made.

While this series can be enjoyed without having read this novella, getting more insight into another character from the series and getting the chance to see just how different things might have been, makes RADIANT an exciting, must read addition to this series.

And for those that don’t yet have BOUNDLESS, this novella offers an incredibly entertaining sneak peek at the prologue and first chapter.

On a personal note…

It was so easy to fall right back in love with this series when reading RADIANT. While Clara wasn’t exactly at her best – pining over Tucker, suffering from her visions – and Angela seemed to be at her worst – selfish, jealous, weak – I still found myself glued to this short story.

I wanted to know more about this mystery man. I wanted to know what it was about him that made Angela’s behavior totally change. I wanted to know if he was someone trustworthy or if Clara was right to be wary.

RADIANT was such a tease. It made me incredibly curious about Angela’s vision – what it meant, when it would come to pass and just who was the guy in the vision. It made me worried about what visions Clara was having. And it made me super nervous about the new character.

But it was the last line that killed me. I had to fight the urge to pick up BOUNDLESS the instant I finished reading this story. It filled me with dread about the events to come. And it made me worried about how just one small choice could alter things so drastically and for the worse.

Fortunately I have BOUNDLESS so I don’t have to wait too long to read it. I cannot imagine how torturous the wait must have been for those who read this novella before it was available to dive right into.

Quickie Review: Undone

Undone

addtogoodreads

UNDONE by Elizabeth Norris was released in the U.S. on March 5, 2013 in eBook format only. It is currently available to order online at AMAZON and BARNES & NOBLE.

Published by Balzer + Bray, the story is 105 pages.

UNDONE is a novella in the author’s Unravelling series set between the first and second books.

Line_001

Description…

Before the accident. Before their universes collided. Before they fell in love.

Riveting and romantic, Undone: An Unraveling Novella contains three short stories set in the world of Unraveling, the first book in the gripping sci-fi duology by Elizabeth Norris.

Before Ben Michaels saved Janelle Tenner’s life, Janelle saved Ben when he stumbled through an interuniverse portal into a completely new world. That day, he fell in love with the girl of his dreams. And he never forgot her.

Through three stories told from Ben’s point of view, learn how Ben and his friends discovered their ability to travel between worlds, how Ben first met Janelle, and how he pined for her for years before he actually got the chance to meet her, save her life, and capture her heart. And find out what happens to Ben between the cliff-hanger conclusion to Unraveling and the beginning of its heart-stopping sequel, Unbreakable.

Line_001

UNDONE is an exciting, fast-paced novella told from Ben Michaels’ perspective that bridges the gap between the events that took place in book one, UNRAVELING, and those that take place in UNBREAKABLE, the final book in the series.

The story also gives readers a quick peek at events in Ben’s life that took place prior to the start of UNRAVELING up through everything that readers had experienced through Janelle’s eyes in that book.

While much of the earlier part of the story had already been revealed, UNDONE let’s readers see just how Ben felt about those things that happened, how he reacted and just how important Janelle was to him.

The beginning of the story jumps rather quickly from moment to moment, only allowing for a glimpse, but the pace slows a bit to allow readers to connect to the new events, those exclusive to this novella.

Where the first part of the story offers a heartwarming and heartbreaking look at Ben’s life, the latter part of the story adds excitement and suspense to the mix. It introduces new characters, reveals that not all is as was expected for Ben and Eli, and sets the stage for things to come.

For those that read this story in sequence, the ending leaves off at a place in the story that will make them anxious to find out what happens next. For those that read it after both full-length novels, while there won’t be that same level of anticipation, it may just prompt a re-read of that next book.

UNDONE is a must for those that want to take a longer look at the world, to find out exactly what happened with Ben and Eli before Janelle’s arrival, or to get to know a little bit more about Ben – his feelings about Janelle, his attempts to return home, and his reasons for what he did after he got there.

And for those that wish to continue the story for just a little bit longer, this eNovella also includes a short two-chapter sneak peek at UNBREAKABLE.

On a personal note…

I am always a fan of getting to see a story from another charcter’s POV. And I loved getting to experience this story through Ben’s eyes. Even if it was only a brief peek.

As I did read this out of sequence, there wasn’t quite the same tension build as there would have been had I not already read the series to its conclusion. But I still enjoyed getting to see what was going on with Ben during the time that led up to everything that happened in UNBREAKABLE.

Of course my favorite part of this novella was seeing what Ben thought of Janelle from the moment they’d first met. Yes, I may have swooned once or twice. And I loved getting to know what was happening with him during those moments from UNRAVELING as seen from Janelle’s POV.

And yes, reading the novella made me want to re-read UNRAVELING so I could match up those previously revealed moments with what I now know about Ben.
