I Have a COMPULSION for Magic Blog Tour: Kami Garcia and Kimberly Derting Guest Post + Giveaway

I am so excited to be participating in the I Have a COMPULSION for Magic Blog Tour hosted by Mundie Moms Blog Tours.

I cannot wait for COMPULSION to be released later this month so that I can meet Barrie and Eight. And although Andye of Reading Teen claims Eight for herself, I’m not giving up any claim. Not without having had the chance to meet him.

This tour kicked off yesterday and continues all the way up to COMPULSION’s release on the 28th. So be sure to follow along – the schedule can be found at the bottom of this post or on its very own tour page, which you can find by clicking the banner (or the link) above.

This tour is filled with all sorts of awesome excerpts from COMPULSION, guest posts from a number of amazing authors, and a super fab giveaway – none of which you’ll want to miss.

Especially my post today which follows below…

The Guest Author Feature

We’re kicking off something special on the Compulsion for Magic tour with a guest-author feature! On different stops of the tour, we’re going to ask authors to weigh in and talk about what kinds of Compulsion-style magical gifts they (or their characters) would like to have and definitely wouldn’t want to have.

Simon Pulse, the publisher of Compulsion has suggested the book is a little like Beautiful Creatures meets The Body Finder, by which they mean it’s like an atmospheric Southern Gothic romance with paranormal elements meets a mystery solved by a main character with an ability to find lost things.

Since Kimberly Derting, author of The Body Finder series, The Pledge novels, and The Taking, had nice things to say after reading Compulsion, we asked her to share some thoughts.

But first . . .

We want to hear from you!

For a chance to win the HUGE tour mega prize of books and the $100 gift card, tell us about the magical gift you’d like to have, but remember—as it is on Compulsion’s Watson Island—magic is often a curse as well as a gift. Don’t forget to think about what it would really be like!

Want to get a head start on your answer?

We also asked Kami Garcia, the #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Beautiful Creatures novels, Unbreakable and Unmarked in The Legion series, and the new Dangerous Creatures series, what kind of magical gift she would like to have.

Here’s Kami’s answer…

“I would love to be able to bend metal like Magneto. Imagine the possibilities… Secretly, I just want to be Magneto.”

And here’s what Kimberly Derting had to say…

If you could have any “everyday” magical gift, like finding lost things or knowing what people want, what gift would you want and why?

I like the finding-lost-things one, mostly since I come from a family of people who lose everything! But I think if I could have any power, other than a Midas turn-everything-into-chocolate touch, it would definitely be to know where my kids are at all times. And I’m not talking about the “Where’s my iPhone” stalker-mom magical app (although I do love that!). Don’t get me wrong, I don’t want to know what they’re always doing, since two of my kids are 21 and 27, but I love the idea of looking into my crystal ball and knowing that they’re safe.

On the other hand, maybe the Midas-chocolate thing after all! ☺

What everyday magic would your characters wish they had and why?

I can sort of imagine Violet (from THE BODY FINDER) wishing she could turn off the whole finding dead bodies thing, and instead picking something fun like walking through walls, flying, or being invisible. All of those are way less disturbing than being drawn to the dead.

Eight, Barrie’s love interest in Compulsion, has inherited his family’s gift of knowing what people want and feeling compelled to give it to them. What’s one gift you’re glad you don’t have? Or your characters would be glad they didn’t have?

I think at one point or another everyone sort of wishes they could read minds. That is, until you really think about all the weird/creepy/probably even insulting things you’d be overhearing inside other people’s heads. I’m not sure I want to know every teeny-tiny thing my husband, my kids, or even my neighbors think about me. Or anyone else for that matter.

Barrie is tied to her family’s plantation, Watson’s Landing, in a magical way, and the whole landscape becomes magical for her. What’s the one place in your book that you wish you could bring to life?

My place would be the ice castle in THE ESSENCE, book #2 in The Pledge trilogy. It’s this old fortress built into an island covered almost entirely in ice and snow, and for some reason (which is strange, since I’m always freezing!), it’s the one place in my novels I’d like to see in real life. (I guess I need to write some books that are set in the Bahamas!)

If you were going to a Halloween party and you had to dress as a character from a Southern Gothic or a Gothic romance, what would your costume look like?

I would go full Scarlett O’Hara, but only because I’ve always wanted to wear a hoop skirt 😉

* * *

You have to love Kimberley! A Midas touch for chocolate? Count me in!

Now your turn!  Tell us about your magic.

And/Or . . .

Bonus option

If you’ve already done that elsewhere on the tour or just want to do something different for extra entry points, show us your magical or Southern gothic costume! How would you do Scarlet O’Hara? Or would you do Lily from The Raven Boys? Violet from Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea? Daphne du Maurier’s Rebecca? Or how would you show an “everyday magic” as a Halloween costume?

Post a comment with the URL to your photo and we’ll share it. Use tag #CompulsionMagic.

Publisher: Simon & Schuster, Simon Pulse
Pages: 448
Formats: Hardcover, eBook
ISBN: 1481411225

Three plantations. Two wishes. One ancient curse.

All her life, Barrie Watson has been a virtual prisoner in the house where she lives with her shut-in mother. When her mother dies, Barrie promises to put some mileage on her stiletto heels. But she finds a new kind of prison at her aunt’s South Carolina plantation instead–a prison guarded by an ancient spirit who long ago cursed one of the three founding families of Watson Island and gave the others magical gifts that became compulsions.

Stuck with the ghosts of a generations-old feud and hunted by forces she cannot see, Barrie must find a way to break free of the family legacy. With the help of sun-kissed Eight Beaufort, who knows what Barrie wants before she knows herself, the last Watson heir starts to unravel her family’s twisted secrets. What she finds is dangerous: a love she never expected, a river that turns to fire at midnight, a gorgeous cousin who isn’t what she seems, and very real enemies who want both Eight and Barrie dead.

I’d love to be able to transport objects to other locations.

  2. smiling_ina says:

I think knowing what everyone wants would be cool. Though, it could also be depressing and frustrating when you realize you can’t give them what they so desperately desire…

  3. Lisa Brown says:

I would like to be able to move or levitate things. It sure would be nice to levitate a soft to vacuum under it 🙂

  4. laura thomas says:

I’d love to be able to find lost things. It would be an adventure and maybe even a career! Thanks for sharing this new series. I live in the south and am always looking for books featured there.

  5. Lea Krnjeta says:

I would love to be able to touch things and know their history. I dont know why, it just fascinates me and it would be “cool” . Thank you for the giveaway 🙂

  6. wulfluva says:

Could I just write really fast? That would help out my papers… Or I could have Jedi mind tricks and levitate objects to me, because yes, I am lazy. 😉

  7. Kristy Petree says:

I guess if it has to be an “everyday” thing, I’d go with telekinetic powers where I could clean house while sitting on the couch…run the vacuum, dust, straighten up a little, etc. Thanks!

  8. MelissaHardy says:

I think I would like the ability to know when people are telling the truth. I know it would suck for a lot of different reasons, but I think it would be worth it.

  9. I would like to have the magical gift to find lost things. It would definitely help me find two flash drives I misplaced a few years ago, since I refuse to admit they’re lost. I think it would be neat to find all the stuff people lose everyday.

  10. akzelaya says:

I would want the ability to see the future.

  11. Samantha E says:

I would love to have a magical power where I could read really fast, I would get to more books that way

  12. jessica q says:

I would like to wiggle my nose and have things get done. Like wiggle my nose and poof clean room.

  13. Kayla Ward says:

I’d love to be able to find the things I’ve lost. That would be an awesome gift, but knowing my luck the gift would cause me to lose more things lol that would be my luck

  14. i would want to read minds so i always would know what people are thinking

  15. Danna says:

Teloportation!!! So that I’ll never be late ever again 🙂

  16. Thomas Murphy says:

I would want the gift of finding lost things because I am always losing my stuff.

  17. Tammy V. says:

Be able to fly. I know not really a good use for that but I would love to fly over the ocean, mountains, and such for the views and thrill of it.

  18. I think I’d want to be able to move things, or have them appear somewhere when they were miles away before. I wonder if that would work for people too? 🙂

  19. Rachelle says:

I would want the ability to take away someones pain or at least be able to ease it a little. Like Scott does on Teen Wolf. Is that an everyday magical gift? Sorry if I did it wrong lol

  20. IceQueenMiki says:

    Freezing time would be amazing.

  21. Fatima Tariq says:

Teleportation so I won’t ever be late 🙂

  22. Kimberly V says:

I would probably like to be able to calm people down and take away their stress. I think it would make everything better.

  23. Rachel says:

To see the future, or to relive moments in the past, that would be nice! But could also drive you insane! 🙂

  24. randomsteph1210 says:

I would love the gift to find anything that’s missing. My boyfriend and kids are always losing stuff!

  25. meghannmm says:

Not super fancy but I’d love to have a photographic memory combined with deductive reasoning 😛

  26. Luisa says:

I would like an ability that’s not dangerous and easy to control… like moving things with my mind (yes, I’m thinking about the remote control) or the ability to stop time for a few hours so I could have time to catch up on my reading.

  27. Anne Martin says:

I wish I could control time! Like from the movie Click except I could control it with my mind instead of a remote. That would be awesome.

  28. lori clark says:

I would want to hear peoples thoughts. I would like to know what people are really like.

  29. Lauren May says:

I would love to be able to travel through time. I would force myself to not procrastinate.

  30. Levitation would be so cool! Thanks for the giveaway!!!

  31. Jessica Elyse says:

Being able to levitate and move object would be so awesome!! And like Max Evans from Roswell, I’d love to be able to heal.

  32. Melissa Golden says:

Being able to find lost things. Although my boyfriend loses things all the time and I think I may already have this gift! 🙂

  33. bookaholic98 says:

I would love to be able to have an internal alarm clock. 15 minute nap? Perfect I will wake up in 15 minutes exact. Important meeting tomorrow for 8? Set my internal alarm to 6, perfect, never be late for anything… I have time management issues. This would be an ideal magical ability.

  34. Aissa G. says:

Telekinesis would be the best hands down. Moving things with your mind? I could make dinner without even having to get up!

Then again, I feel like side effects might include headaches if I overuse my power to much, but I’m sure some Advil will take care of that. 🙂 The reward definitely outweighs the risk. ^_^

  35. Baggins (Kim Waters) says:

Not sure it counts as an ‘everyday’ magical thing, but if I could have any gift I’d want to be able to teleport. No transport or time necessary, just a thought & I’m where I want to be. 🙂

  36. I’d want the power to be able to dive into books and live whatever character I want, when I want. That would be amazing because I would love to experience things like Hogwarts, Camp Half-Blood, etc. Well, maybe not Hunger Games…

  37. Ali Goff says:

I think I would want to be able to teleport. It would make getting around so much easier.

  38. I ‘d want the power to be able to read other people’s mind. I’d really like to hear other people’s thoughts and be able to know if they are telling the truth or not.

  39. Is telekinesis an “everyday” power? Or maybe hedgewitchery.

  40. MichelleRae6 says:

I’d want the ability to always remember what I want to remember. You know how sometimes you want to remember something and it’s on the very tip of your tongue but you can’t name it? I want the power that would fix that problem. No more short term memory loss!

  41. Kelsey says:

    🙂 <3

  42. Janet H says:

I would love to be able to wield lighting 🙂

  43. Kellani says:

I would simply like to have the magic of perfect pitch, so that when I sight read music, I would be able to sing it properly wihtout really trying. However, it would be a curse to have a s well, given I would be able to tell every time someone went flat, instead of hearing the gradual result of people going flat over time.

  44. bn100 says:

    to cast spells

  45. Ke-sha says:

I would like the ability to remember everything. Like a Photographic memory.

  46. Dovile says:

I’d like to be able to make potions. I already love herbs and cooking, and it would be awesome if what I make would also have magical properties, like liquid courage for example:)

  47. Janhvi says:

I would want to know what people want.

  48. Valentina says:

I would like the ability to read other people’s mind. I’d really like to be able to know if they are telling the truth or not or what they are thinking about me.

  49. Eléanore says:

I’d like the ability to make things come to me, because sometimes, I just don’t want to move to have something I need ! Or I’d like to travel in time, just to see how it was a few century ago.

  50. I’d like to be able to pause and play time. I never feel like there are enough hours in the day to get things done so having a couple of extra hours would be great! Then I could read a whole book in one without having to stop because it’s time to do other stuff 🙂
