Quarter Talk: What These 9 Bloggers are Saying – Q4 2013

Quarter_Talk

Welcome to the fourth – and final – edition of Quarter Talk.* For those of you who are not familiar with it, Quarter Talk is a feature that I started here on Fiktshun in Q1 2013.

It’s a quarterly post – hence the name – where I check in with five to ten bloggers to see how they answer the following five questions about favorite reads from the past quarter, anticipated reads from the upcoming quarter, recommended debuts, trends and covers.

(If you’d like to check out last quarter’s Quarter Talk post, you can find it HERE.)

Q1. What has been your favorite read during the fourth quarter of 2013 (October-December)?

Q2. What is your most anticipated book releasing in January-March 2014?

Q3. What debut book/author released in Q4 2013 would you recommend?

Q4. What genre/sub-genre/trend do you think was “hot” during the fourth quarter of this year?

Q5. What is your favorite cover of Q4 2013?

While the blogger participants may have changed, the questions remained the same. And today, on the 15th day of the month following the end of Q4, I have these nine bloggers’ thoughts to share.

As previously, I have attempted to include a somewhat diverse, but small, group of bloggers in order to get a representative sampling of what’s “hot” and what’s on their radars each quarter. Therefore not all titles will be YA.

*Credit for the name Quarter Talk goes to Rachel of Parajunkee Design who created the banner. She came up with this title when I drew a blank as to the name I’d originally decided upon and couldn’t come up with a clever alternative when put on the spot.

Question 1

What has been your favorite read during the fourth quarter of 2013 (October-December)?

Donna says…

My absolute favorite read this quarter, and one of my top 3 reads of the entire year, was THESE BROKEN STARS by Amie Kaufman. I listened to the audiobook from Listening Library brilliantly narrated by Cynthia Holloway, Johnathan McClain, and Sarge Anton. I can’t wait to read the next in the series!

Dots_Divider

Jaime says…

UNHINGED by A.G. Howard, REBEL SPRING by Morgan Rhodes, SNAKEROOT by Andrea Cremer, INDEPENDENT STUDY by Joelle Charbonneau, & THESE BROKEN STARS by Meagan Spooner and Amie Kaufman.

Dots_Divider

Lisa says…

YA – RACING SAVANNAH By: Miranda Kenneally

New Adult – ALL THE PRETTY LIES By: M. Leighton

Dots_Divider

Daisy says…

I actually read a lot of duds this quarter, but I LOVED THESE BROKEN STARS by Amie Kaufman and Meagan Spooner and ACROSS A STAR-SWEPT SEA by Diana Peterfreund! They were both beautiful books and THESE BROKEN STARS didn’t even really sound like a me-book before I started it! I love getting surprised by books like that :)

Dots_Divider

Danny says…

Oh I have been in Thailand during this time for a 3 weeks vacation so I had tons of time to read. So this is a tough question!

I remember being mega excited over reading AVALON by Mindee Arnett. It’s a SciFi story which I could best describe as Star Wars meets The Heist Society. And gosh, it has been such an adventure!

The second book I was super thrilled about was ALIENATED by Melissa Landers. A YA Alien – SciFi - Contemporary Romance Adventure which had everything I’m always looking for in a good story! The romance and love story has been so beautiful and touching!

Dots_Divider

Reanna says…

My number one book read in this quarter would have to be DEFY by Sara B. Larson. I can’t believe we have to wait almost a year to see what happens next!

A close second is NORTH POLE REFORM SCHOOL by Jaimie Admans. It was such a sweet story!

Dots_Divider

Kt says…

Adult: REAVER by Larissa Ione – I LOVED this story. It was really great to see all the plot threads that had been placed throughout the series finally come together. Enemies to lovers all the way!

YA: DAYLIGHTERS by Rachel Caine – While I was sad to see this much loved series end, it went out with one heck of a bang, and I loved how it all turned out.

Dots_Divider

Mindy says…

This one is easy! I’m obsessed with ENDLESS KNIGHT by Kresley Cole!!! Death plays a major part in this book and his character really surprised me! There were a lot of some pretty crazy scenes, a few hawt scenes and a killer ending. Epic!

Dots_Divider

Alba says…

Wow, now that I’m looking into it I read quite a few books the last quarter of 2013 but I’ve got to say one of my top faves has got to be JET by Jay Crownover. It’s a new adult contemporary romance and it’s the second book in the Marked Men series.

Holly Books! That about sums it up. And another one that has definitely got to be one of the books that killed me last year — GOLD by Talia Vance. What the Clouds?!! Seriously? Was the author’s point to make me cry? Consider it a job well done.

Dots_Divider

Question 2

What is your most anticipated book releasing in January-March 2014?

Donna says…

ALIENATED by Melissa Landers and UNINVITED by Sophie Jordan are definitely the two on my most wanted list for Jan-March 2014.

Dots_Divider

Jaime says…

LOL I’ve read them all! But here’s the ones I’ve read and loved! LANDRY PARK by Bethany Hagen, THE WINNER’S CURSE by Marie Rutkoski, DEATH SWORN by Leah Cypess, ALL THAT GLOWS by Ryan Graudin, ALIENATED by Melissa Landers, CRESS by Marissa Meyer, HER DARK CURIOSITY by Megan Shepherd, & NIL by Lynne Matson.

Dots_Divider

Lisa says…

YA – INTO THE STILL BLUE By: Veronica Rossi

New Adult – SONG OF THE FIREFLIES By: J.A. Redmersky

Dots_Divider

Daisy says…

Oh man, SO MANY! But if I have to pick two, I’m going to go with SPLIT SECOND by Kasie West, because PIVOT POINT was AMAZING and THAT ENDING! Another book I’m really looking forward to is THE LOST SISTERHOOD by Ann Fortier, I totally loved her first book Juliet and am sure this one will be amazing as well!

Dots_Divider

Danny says…

NIL by Lynne Matson. Ever since they changed the cover I’ve been hooked. Plus the story sounds so amazing. It sounds a little like LOST and I know I’ve been addicted to that series for a very long time!

WHITE HOT KISS by Jennifer L. Armentrout. I mean it’s Jennifer Armentrout, the master storyteller who is known to create the most swoon worthy guys ever. And I know that WHITE HOT KISS is exactly as awesome and outstanding as I hoped it would be!! Seriously Girls, be prepared for a major squee fest and swoon fest over Roth!

And…of course all those sequels from my most beloved series, like The Lunar Chronicles. :)

Dots_Divider

Reanna says…

THE UNDEAD POOL by Kim Harrison. I must get my hands on this book the minute it’s released. As soon as I can, I’ll be pre-ordering it!

Also, THE AWAKENING by Nicole R. Taylor is a must read for me. This is going to be the final book in The Witch Hunter Saga, though there may be a novella or two down the road. I love this series. I love this author. Nicole was one of the best finds for me in 2013.

Dots_Divider

Kt says…

Adult – Uhm can I have a four way tie? There are four adult books that I am DYING to read. These are probably pretty close to the very top of my all time favorite series and I’ve had them pre-ordered for an embarrassingly long time: UP FROM THE GRAVE by Jeaniene Frost, WILD THINGS by Chloe Neill, THE UNDEAD POOL by Kim Harrison, NIGHT BROKEN by Patricia Briggs.

YA – This one is easy to narrow down, IGNITE ME by Tahereh Mafi. I can’t wait to see how things end!!

Dots_DividerMindy says…

I can hardly wait for IGNITE ME by Tahereh Mafi and INTO THE STILL BLUE by Veronica Rossi! But I think I might be a little hesitant to want their stories to come to an end, and I’m actually a little worried about the outcomes of both stories!

Dots_Divider

Alba says…

Just 2 books? Seriously… I’m dying here. IGNITE ME by Tahereh Mafi and and and… This is so hard *_* EVERTRUE by Brodi Ashton…

Ahhhhhhhh I’ll just mention 2 names Cat & Bones. <3

Dots_Divider

Question 3

What debut book/author released in Q4 2013 would you recommend?

Donna says…

Of course I’d highly recommend THESE BROKEN STARS by Amie Kaufman. I didn’t read as many debut authors in 2013 as I would have liked. I plan to do better this year!

Dots_Divider

Jaime says…

I didn’t read any debut’s during this quarter.

Dots_Divider

Lisa says…

YA – OLIVIA TWISTED By: Vivi Barnes

New Adult – TATTOO THIEF By: Heidi Joy Tretheway

Dots_Divider

Daisy says…

I just noticed that I totally failed at reading debuts last quarter…

Dots_Divider

Danny says…

Oh most definitely Sabrina Elkins! She released her debut STIR ME UP with Harlequin Teen in October and her story was so wonderful, touching and moving that I fell deeply in love with her and her writing. She reminded me of Katie McGarry, who is maybe my most favorite author ever!

Dots_Divider

Reanna says…

The best debut I read this quarter was DEFY, but since it didn’t release until January, I (technically!) can’t use it here! Wait…I did just use it here. ;)

Dots_Divider

Kt says…

I actually didn’t read any new authors this quarter, but I have some pics for new series starting books.

Adult – HELL BENT by Devon Monk. I love the Allie Beckstrom series, so I was ridiculously excited about Shamus’s spin off, and even more so when it lived up to my expectations.

YA – PAWN by Aimee Carter. This book rocked! The world was interesting and the characters were really great. Loved it!

Dots_Divider

Mindy says…

Unfortunately, I didn’t read any debuts released in the forth quarter. So, I hope the debut I’m about to mention isn’t cheating because it deserves attention! I did “read” DEFY by Sara B Larson in the fourth quarter, and it only just released this week. That book was amazing, and I can’t wait to see how the story will continue.

Dots_Divider

Alba says…

Didn’t read any book from a debut author. Seriously. And now I’m just beginning to remember that I always read books by new authors months and months after they debut them.

Dots_Divider

Question 4

What genre/sub-genre/trend do you think was “hot” during the fourth quarter of this year?

Donna says…

I think YA sci-fi is the “hot” genre and gaining momentum going into 2014. I know there are several sci-fi-esque reads I’m looking forward to this year. I’m still a big fan of zombies, post apocalyptic, and dystopic fiction so I hope they keep those coming as well! I would love to see Epic Fantasy packed with magical creatures and fascinating worlds become a trend.

Dots_Divider

Jaime says…

Still New Adult ugh and Contemporary YA.

Dots_Divider

Lisa says…

I’m still sticking with my answer from the last three quarters and that’d be “New Adult”.

Dots_Divider

Daisy says…

I’m so bad at this, but I’ve noticed that New Adult is still hot and maybe it’s just me but I’ve seen more books about parallel worlds/alternate realities.
Dots_Divider

Danny says…

Even though the whole year Contemporary was the up and rising star – during this last months of this year there were definitely more YA SciFi and Fantasy books coming out. I think this has also to do with the season, as during winter time everything is darker outside so people feel like dreaming some more. *shrugs*

Dots_Divider

Reanna says…

The Contemporary New Adult trend doesn’t seem to be going away anytime soon. As I said last quarter, there are some great books out there, but you may have to dig to find them.

Dots_Divider

Kt says…

Probably gonna have to say NA again…

Dots_DividerMindy says…

I think it’s still New Adult, but I’m not really paying close attention.

Dots_Divider

Alba says…

I think contemporary NA came back full force the last quarter of the year. There were a lot of really awaited releases like J.Lynn and Abbi Glines, Penelope Douglas and a lot more. But also YA contemporary made somewhat of an appearance thanks to Katie McGarry.

Dots_Divider

Question 5

What is your favorite cover of Q4 2013?

Donna says…

HeroThe Eye of Minds

There was A LOT of cover love happening as the year came to a close! I never get tired of “pretty dress” covers so HERO by Alethea Kontis is probably the first cover that comes to mind. I thought it was simply stunning! My son was particularly excited about the cover for THE EYE OF MINDS by James Dashner and I agree, it’s a pretty cool cover (and was an awesome Christmas present for my 12 year old!)

Dots_Divider

Jaime says…

Rebel SpringThese Broken Stars

REBEL SPRING by Morgan Rhodes or THESE BROKEN STARS by Meagan Spooner & Amie Kaufman.

Dots_Divider

Lisa says…

These Broken StarsRide

YA – THESE BROKEN STARS By: Amie Kaufman

New Adult - RIDE By: J.C. Emery

Dots_Divider

Daisy says…

These Broken StarsTaste of Darkness UK

The cover of THESE BROKEN STARS and the UK cover for TASTE OF DARKNESS by Maria V. Snyder, the UK covers for this series are so much prettier than the US ones!

Dots_Divider

Danny says…

TeardropCrash Into You

Oh Rachel! How can you ask me this! There are so many amazing covers that I could ever pick just one…But Ok, I try with .. picking two -ok ? :))

TEARDROP by Lauren Kate. This cover is insanely beautiful, the wonderful colours and the dreamy aspect makes me excited and happy even looking at it!

CRASH INTO YOU by Katie McGarry. I absolutely LOVE the very unique angle of this cover shot! I love Isaiah and Rachel lying in the car and the birds eye view. It’s such a gorgeous cover!

Dots_Divider

Reanna says…

North Pole Reform School

My favorite cover this quarter is NORTH POLE REFORM SCHOOL. I love it. It’s just perfect. :)

Dots_Divider

Kt says…

Darkness SplinteredPawn

Adult – DARKNESS SPLINTERED by Keri Arthur. Gorgeous and badass at the same time. Love it!

YA – PAWN by Aimee Carter. There’s just something about the simplicity of this cover that draws me in. And the eye behind the image… Perfect.

Dots_Divider

Mindy says…

These Broken Stars

THESE BROKEN STARS by Amie Kaufman. I haven’t read it yet but I love the cover!

Dots_Divider

Alba says…

Perfect RuinControl

PERFECT RUIN by Lauren DeStefano, gorgeous cover & CONTROL by Lydia Kang has an amazing and interesting cover.

Dots_Divider

In Sum

In Q4 2013 the blogger participants seem to have a bit more in common in terms of favorite reads. THESE BROKEN STARS by Amie Kaufman and Meagan Spooner popped up quite a bit. ALIENATED by Melissa Landers made a few bloggers’ lists, too.

The NA contemporary trend appears to still be going strong, though YA sci-fi is making its presence known. The most popular cover this quarter goes to THESE BROKEN STARS. And in this last quarter of 2013 not a lot of debut books or authors were discovered.

Dots_Divider

What Do You Think?

So that’s what these nine bloggers think. But what about you?

Do you agree with any (or all) of their picks? Would you answer the questions differently if you were asked?

Is there a trend or genre/sub-genre that you think is “hot” right now that wasn’t mentioned? Or do you think the blogger participants covered all the bases?

Leave a comment if you do. I’d love to know!

Dots_Divider

A final note…

I would just like to thank each and every one of the bloggers who accepted my invitation to participate each quarter. Your favorite reads and insights into the trends have been enormously valuable and I loved seeing what you had to say on or around the 15th. Thank you so much for sharing!

  1. Everyone seems to love These Broken Stars, I definitely need to finish it.

I agree that the sci-fi YA trend is picking up, and we’ll see a lot of it this year, and I really can’t wait, because I love sci-fi :)

And I haven’t actually read any of these books, though I want to read them almost all of them, but one of my fav books that was published this quarter & that I read is Cold Blooded by Amanda Carlson, and I also love its cover, too. I also loved The Creeps by John Connolly, as well as Cinda Williams Chima’s The Enchanter Heir (I actually read it before October from an eARC, but it was published in October.

And from the books coming out in the following months, there are quite a lot I can’t wait for: Half-Off Ragnarok by Seanan McGuire, Cress by Marissa Meyer, Cruel Beauty by Rosamund Hodge, The Unbound by Victoria Schwab, Defy, etc. I can definitely go on & on.

Thanks for all the answers & recommendations :D

  2. Dina says:

I feel like the only person who did not like These Broken Stars. I just found it so boring and could not get into the love story at all. I guess not all books are for all people.

Sci-fi is a hot genre right now, there are even a new crop of TV shows with a sci-fi bent. I do like seeing more fantasy books and I hope that continues.

As most of the bloggers mentioned, I am pretty over New Adult. It was never a genre a read a ton of anyway but I am seeing less people reading (and reviewing) this genre lately.

  3. Thank you so much Rachel for inviting me! It’s been so much fun!
And I was *this* close to pick also These Broken Stars and YEAH about DEFY! loved it soo much!

I must apologize for my Cover pick as I just realised TEARDROP came out earlier… But I still love this cover so so much!

I’m surprised about the trend question as many picked New Adult again. I think it’s a personal taste that I don’t see so many right now. I got a little tired of the same old/same old topics in NA which is why I didn’t read many. So obviously I shut my eyes about this.

  4. Ahhh I need to read These Broken Stars then… :O

T_T I cannot wait for J.Lynn’s book too!! How could I forget!!!!!!!!

    -hugs-
    #1stalker

  5. I’m happy that sci-fi is making a comeback this year. I’m so over the paranormal romances of 2013.

I liked These Broken Stars too and I can’t wait to get my own copy soon. I think I’m going to try to read Maria Synder’s series over the next couple of months because I’ve heard nothing but good things about her.

I hope you’re going to continue this in 2014, since I really enjoyed hearing the Q and As. :D
