I am absolutely thrilled to be today’s stop on the TASTE OF DARKNESS Blog Tour hosted by Rockstar Book Tours and to be able to share Maria V. Snyder’s Five Favorite Quotes from her novels and why they are favorites of hers on this first day of the new year.
Maria V. Snyder is an amazing and creative and imaginative writer who not only pens brilliant fantasy novels but unique and engaging science fiction books, too. And while I haven’t yet met all of her characters in all of her series, I have met, crushed on, adored, several of them. And there’s not a story of hers that I’ve read that I haven’t fallen in love with.

Maria V. Snyder’s Top Five Favorite Quotes from Her Novels… and Why
Finding only five is going to be hard! But here’s goes.
1 – From POISON STUDY:
“It’s a dirty way to fight, but I’m late for lunch.” Valek says this after he disarms and knocks out two opponents in ten seconds. I love this quote because it defines Valek’s character so well. He’s an assassin, he’s practical, and he has a bit of a dark sense of humor.
2 – From POISON STUDY (this one really doesn’t need an explanation for why I like it so much ☺):
“But you’ve slipped under my skin, invaded my blood and seized my heart.” [Valek confessing his love to Yelena]
“That sounds more like a poison than a person,” was all I [Yelena] could say. His confession had both shocked and thrilled me.
“Exactly,” Valek replied. “You have poisoned me.” [sigh!]
3 – From INSIDE OUT:
“I never said it would be easy. Giving up is easy.” Riley says this to Trella when she’s at her darkest point in the story. I’m a big believer in persisting and to keep going despite the setbacks in life. This quote says it perfectly.
4 – From STORM GLASS:
“I know I hated magic for a reason,” Janco said.
“Congratulations. This is the first time you’ve had a VALID reason to hate something,” Ari countered. “Remember your campaign against sand?”
“Sand! Horrid little stuff. Gets everywhere. I had a perfectly good argue–”
“Janco.” Ari’s voice rumbled deep in his throat.
In a heartbeat, Janco switched gears. “Well, this blood magic sounds worse than sand.”
Ari and Janco are two of my most popular side characters. My readers are always commenting that they want more from these guys (I did write a short story about them called POWER STUDY that’s available for free here: http://www.mariavsnyder.com/powerstudy.php). I love Janco’s quirky way of looking at life. He’s fun, goofy, and doesn’t pout for long or hold grudges unless it’s regarding sand. However, he can become deadly serious when the time is right. This little exchange between the partners just shows their personalities so well.
5 – From TOUCH OF POWER:
“…things happen that are out of your control.” [Belen says to Kerrick as he and Avry are about to leave for a mission]
Kerrick gave him a tight smile. “You mean I’m not omnipotent?”
“You’re not even semi-potent.” [Belen]
“’Is that even a word?” Kerrick asked.
“He probably means you’re impotent,” I [Avry] offered.
I love this exchange between these three. It shows that Belen cares for Avry and is stepping into the protective “older brother” role. It shows Kerrick does have a sense of humor after chapters of being way too serious. And it shows Avry is comfortable enough with Kerrick to tease him.
Fiktshun: I LOVE all five of these quotes. They are the perfect choices. Especially the first one, which I completely and totally agree speaks volumes about Valek and left me grinning when I first read it and again when reading it in this post.
I also wholeheartedly agree with the quote from INSIDE OUT. It’s so true and real and is something to remember when faced with the many challenges that life throws at you.
And oh my gosh that passage from TOUCH OF POWER is not only laugh out loud funny, but left me snickering for a long while after reading it.
Remember, this is just a small taste of the amazing that is Maria V. Snyder, so be sure to pick up any (or all) of her books to find out just how awesome she is.

Laying hands upon the injured and dying, Avry of Kazan assumes their wounds and diseases into herself. But rather than being honored for her skills, she is hunted. Healers like Avry are accused of spreading the plague that has decimated the Territories, leaving the survivors in a state of chaos.
Stressed and tired from hiding, Avry is abducted by a band of rogues who, shockingly, value her gift above the golden bounty offered for her capture. Their leader, an enigmatic captor-protector with powers of his own, is unequivocal in his demands: Avry must heal a plague-stricken prince—leader of a campaign against her people. As they traverse the daunting Nine Mountains, beset by mercenaries and magical dangers, Avry must decide who is worth healing and what is worth dying for. Because the price of peace may well be her life….

As the last Healer in the Fifteen Realms, Avry of Kazan is in a unique position: in the minds of her friends and foes alike, she no longer exists. And she must do it alone, as Kerrick, her partner and sole confident, returns to Alga to summon his country into battle.
Though she should be in hiding, Avry will do whatever she can to support Tohon’s opponents. Including infiltrating a holy army, evading magic sniffers, teaching forest skills to soldiers and figuring out how to stop Tohon’s most horrible creations yet; an army of the walking dead—human and animal alike and nearly impossible to defeat.
War is coming and Avry is alone. Unless she figures out how to do the impossible … again.

Maria V. Snyder changed from being a meteorologist to a novelist in 1995, when she began writing to keep her sanity while raising two children. Since then, she has published numerous freelance articles in magazines and newspapers, and teaches fiction-writing classes at the local college and area libraries. The classes give her the wonderful opportunity to encourage fellow writers, and to keep improving her craft.
Born and raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Maria always had a fascination with big storms. Dreaming of chasing tornados, Maria earned a bachelors of science degree in meteorology at Penn State University. But she discovered, much to her chagrin, that forecasting the weather wasn’t one of her skills. In order to chase tornados you had to predict where they might form. Creating fantasy worlds where she has complete control of the weather was more agreeable to her.
Maria’s research on food-tasting methods with an expert chocolate taster, her husband, turned out to be a delicious bonus while writing Poison Study.
Maria has a brown belt in Isshinryu Karate, and enjoys playing volleyball and the cello. Traveling in general and via cruise ship in particular are her biggest distractions from writing. Maria has traveled to Belize, Canada, China, Costa Rica, Europe, Mexico, the Caribbean and through the Panama Canal.
Maria lives with her husband, son, daughter and yellow lab, Hazelnut, in Pennsylvania where she is at work on more LUNA novels. She is also pursuing a master’s degree in writing popular fiction from Seton Hill University.
