I am so excited to be kicking off the first day here on the Authors Are Rockstars Tour with an author who is on my top five favorite authors of all time list – the incredibly talented and always amazing, Rachel Vincent.
I would have loved to have hosted this author last year – as she is a rockstar author in every way – but I felt like that would have been too greedy of me. And I still feel that way, but as she is one of my very most favorite authors I just had to host her this year and have her be a part of the tour kick-off today.
And for her stop today she’s answered the burning question on my mind – and I’m sure all of her fans’ minds – “What’s Next for Rachel Vincent?”
As I have read the post, I am even more excited than before for the release of her upcoming YA and Adult titles. And while I did get a very early peek at the first book in her new YA series – which is unbelievably AWESOME – I still can’t wait to read the final version and to see it on the shelves.
In addition to the awesome guest post by this author, who I’ve considered a rockstar since long before I started blogging, I have a couple of giveaways to share. The first is courtesy of the publisher, Harlequin Teen, and the second is something I’m offering up for giveaway. So be sure to check them out, below.
I know I’ve already rambled on a bit here, as I tend to do, but as part of my post I’m supposed to share why I think the author I’m hosting is a rockstar. And so…
Rachel Vincent is a rockstar because…
She is one of the hardest working authors I know.
She is dedicated to her craft and works tirelessly on her stories to make sure they are the very best they can be.
She cares about her characters.
She is not afraid to take on subjects that are complicated, difficult.
She’s not afraid to take her stories in a direction that may not be the most popular.
She is one of the most talented authors I know.
She has the ability to put her readers (and characters) on emotional roller coasters like no other writer.
She creates characters and stories that are “real” and believable, even though they are in the paranormal/urban fantasy genre.
She is a master at sarcastic dialogue.
She created Tod.
She wrote passages like…
Tod lifted me and turned, and suddenly I was looking up at him, propped up on my elbows. His eyes churned with an intense blend of pain, and fear, and need, and anger, but at the center, just outside of his pupils, there was a deep spiral of something more powerful than all the others. Something stronger, like it could swallow everything else he was feeling with a sudden, startling leap of intuition, I realized that that spiral was me. That deep, bright blue that grew and twisted throughout the other colors—that was how he felt about me.
“So you really did grow up on cookies and cake. I knew it.”
“That’s why I’m so sweet now. I have no idea what went wrong with Nash.”
And one of my favorites…
“I am in the clench of every first. I am the hot thrum of blood rushing through your veins. Every thud of knuckles against flesh is the cry of my true name. I am the glint of rage in your ex’s eyes, the livid grinding of his teeth. My pulse is the wave of anger washing over the crows. The swing of a corpse from the noose. The final twitch of a man murdered in revenge. I know you, Kaylee Cavanaugh. I know you very, very well and I can give you what you want most in the world. What no one else can give you.”
(Passages and quotes from WITH ALL MY SOUL.)
So, yes, for these… and so many, many, many more… reasons, Rachel Vincent is a total rockstar. And I’m so unbelievably stoked to be able to have her here on the blog today to kick off the first day of the month-long 2nd Annual Authors Are Rockstars Tour.
A resident of Central Oklahoma, Rachel Vincent has a BA in English and an overactive imagination, and consistently finds the latter to be more practical. She shares her office with two black cats (Kaci and Nyx) and her # 1 fan. Rachel is older than she looks-seriously-and younger than she feels, but remains convinced that for every day she spends writing, one more day will be added to her lifespan.
As some of you may know, I had two releases this past spring, one in YA, the other in adult. WITH ALL MY SOUL (Soul Screamers 7) and OATH BOUND (Unbound 3) hit the shelves less than a month apart. They were each the last book in their respective series.
To reiterate, I ended two different series, one YA and one adult, within thirty days of each other.
If you think that was a stressful month for me, you’re right. If you think I suffered multiple panic attacks as well as the urge to hide from the internet, you’d be right again. But if you think that double final release led to the biggest “what now?” moment of my career, well…you’d be wrong about that.
I hit the “what now?” panic waaaaay in advance.
I’m a planner. I begin every single day of my life with a plan, even if that plan is “Do nothing, and do it well.” The most common question I ask my husband (other than, “What’s for dinner.”) is “What’s your plan?” For the day. For the evening. For retirement. And yes, for dinner.
I can’t function if I don’t know what I need to be doing, even if I have no intention of actually doing that thing that needs to be done, which is often the case with folding laundry. 😉 I don’t sit down and flip through the TV stations. I don’t even turn the TV on unless I already know what I want to watch.
So, I know what’s next for me, in publishing, and I’ve known since long before I was allowed to announce either project. By the time the Soul Screamers and Unbound series officially ended, I’d already sold two books in my upcoming young adult series to Delacorte and the debut of my upcoming adult series to Mira. ANATHEMA, the first in the new YA series, was complete when I sold it, and I’d been working on it in one form or another for around two years, at that point. By the time it comes out in 2015, I will have been working on it for more than four years.
I was almost 40,000 words into the new adult book (Since I can’t tell you what it is yet, let’s just call it ADULT) by the time OATH BOUND came out, and I’d been working on it (at least conceptually) for a more than a year. By the time ADULT comes out, I will have been working on it for two and a half years.
It seems strange to me that in these days of instant messaging and instant gratification, traditional publishing still seems to move at a snail’s pace, but sometimes that’s true. Neither good, nor bad, but definitely, inarguably true. Everything takes longer than it seems like it should, even if there’s a really good reason.
Because of the two-year wait for ANATHEMA to hit the shelves, 2014 is a rebuilding year for me in YA. The only young adult release I’ll have is the SS Volume 4 omnibus, but Soul Screamers readers won’t want to miss it! Volume 4 will contain brand new content, written especially for this omnibus. (Hint: Tod) Stay tuned for the cover and an official description of this new content!
On the bright side, I should be able to officially announce ADULT soon. Very soon. In a matter of days, if the rumors are true. So stay tuned. I think you’re going to like this one. 😉
And if you’re a Soul Screamers fan, or a reader who’s always wanted to try the series, I have even more good news. Soul Screamers Volume 3 came out two days ago. It contains books 5 & 6 (IF I DIE and BEFORE I WAKE) as well as the Sophie novella “Never To Sleep,” which is now in print for the first time! What that means is that the first six (of seven) novels are now in two-book bind-ups, each of which includes a bonus novella.
Hopefully that’s enough to tide you over until you meet Nina in ANATHEMA, in 2015!
It starts with a scream .
