My Reading Pile #99
Feb 02
A couple of the books I was expecting this week didn’t show up and neither did the books I traded for, but that is more than fine because I got this seriously awesome stack of books thanks to Jaime of Two Chicks on Books and her amazing mom!
So I am absolutely not complaining.

While I haven’t heard of all the books in the above pile, I was so unbelievably excited when I learned that GODDESS by Josephine Angelini was headed my way. I’d read DREAMLESS early last year and I’ve been pining for this book in the worst way.
I am also so unbelievably excited for BORN OF ILLUSION by Teri Brown, POISON by Bridget Zinn, ICONS by Margaret Stohl, IN THE AFTER by Demitria Lunetta, TRANSPARENT by Natalie Whipple, and THE END GAMES by T. Michael Martin, which I almost requested from Edelweiss this past week.
And I’m super curious about the other two books which I hadn’t heard of – WHEN WE WAKE by Karen Healey and RUSH by Eve Silver.
While I am incredibly tempted to throw GODDESS on the pile this week, as it was one of my wishful thinking reads last week, I am going to try very hard to stick to the two books I have decided to read this week. And so…
Here are the books I have in my reading pile this week.
(February 3, 2013 – February 9, 2013)
First up on the pile is ETIQUETTE & ESPIONAGE by Gail Carriger. I received an ARC a few months back from Jaime and I’ve been dying to get it on the pile. As it is releasing this week I just have to read it.
I have been in the most eclectic of reading moods lately and while I normally gravitate to all things paranormal – vampires, fae, demons – I have been seeking out books that are just a little bit different. And this novel has been shouting, loudly, from the pile.
I cannot wait to get immersed in this story of etiquette, “death, diversion, deceit, espionage, and the modern weaponries.” I can’t wait to meet Sophronia and find out just how she fares her first year at finishing school.
The cover is gorgeous and the story sounds amazing and I am super excited to read my first Gail Carriger novel this week.
I had been waiting for a couple of months for NOBODY BUT US to come out and now that it has I just have to get it on the pile this week. I just have to meet Zoe and Will. And I just have to find out whether their story has a bittersweet ending or a tragic one.
I am so curious as to what they did that was so terrible that they’re on the run. I want to find out why their escape is “fraught with danger.” And I’m so desperate to read this book that’s touted as being “heartbreaking and hopeful.”
And while I would love to have put this book at the top of the pile this week, I am making this the second read just in case it totally wrecks me as I expect it will.
Wishful Thinking Reads:
I really, really want to read ICONS by Margaret Stohl this week. This book sounds utterly amazing and I cannot wait to meet Dol, Ro, Tima and Lucas. I want to know exactly what happened to Earth, why they survived and what the conspiracy is all about. But as it doesn’t come out for awhile and I have a few books I should be reading before then, for now it’s only just a wish.
Those Left Behind:
I finished reading ILLUMINATE, though I am a bit behind on my review. It was such a gorgeous story, rich with detail, that I found I needed to sit with it for just a bit longer to organize my thoughts. I will be posting it this coming Wednesday, though.
I also managed to sneak in DANCE OF SHADOWS which I devoured in what felt like an instant. I’d been told the story started off a bit slowly, but for me the beginning passed in a blink. I loved the setting – both the fact that it was in New York and that it was specifically in New York’s Lincoln Center. I loved the mystery. I loved all the talk of the ballet. And I loved… okay I suppose I should wait to include all that in my review, which I plan on writing this week.
I just started UNBREAKABLE, but will be reading it this weekend, so I hope to start on this week’s pile on Monday at the latest. I also hope to have written both my HOUSE RULES and ILLUMINATE reviews by Monday. But that is still to be determined as I have a number of other posts that need to be written for the week ahead.
NetGalley Pile Adds:
I discovered WEATHER WITCH by Shannon Delany (St. Martin’s Griffin, June 25, 2013) on NetGalley this week and of course I had to request it. I’m not confident I will get approved, but I had to try.
But that’s the only book I’ve requested this week. Even though I was so very tempted by some of the finds. Looking at the books on my NetGalley TBR shelf just waiting to be read and reviewed reminds me that I should really not request anything until I get a bit more caught up.
So for now, here are the books that caught my eye….
THE MURDER NOTEBOOKS: KILLING RACHEL by Anne Cassidy (Bloomsbury USA Children’s Books, Feb 26, 2013)
ODETTE’S SECRETS by Maryann MacDonald (Bloomsbury USA Children’s Books, Feb 26, 2013)
THE SUMMER PRINCE by Alaya Dawn Johnson (Scholastic Inc., Mar 1, 2013)
THAT TIME I JOINED THE CIRCUS by J.J. Howard (Scholastic Inc., April 1, 2013)
OBSIDIAN MIRROR by Catherine Fisher (Dial, April 23, 2013)
THE ART OF WISHING by Lindsay Ribar (Dial, Mar 21, 2013)
BELOW by Meg McKinlay (Candlewick Press, May 14, 2013)
JANE AUSTEN GOES TO HOLLYWOOD by Abby McDonald (Candlewick, April 9, 2013)
SURFACING by Nora Raleigh Baskin (Candlewick, Mar 12, 2013)
FORMERLY SHARK GIRL by Kelly Bingham (Candlewick, May 14, 2013)
NOTES FROM GHOST TOWN by Kate Ellison (Egmont, Feb 12, 2013)
There are quite a few books I found this time around. I suppose looking A to Z through the publishers listed increases the odds of finding something pretty dramatically. And I was just so very tempted to request NOTES FROM GHOST TOWN but as it’s releasing in just over a week I decided to buy it and read it at my leisure… someday soon, I hope.
Things started getting back to “business as usual” on the blog this past week. And I finally was able to focus on reading again mid-week. So hopefully next week I’ll be able to get ahead with my posts again. I am very hopeful for a quiet blogging week ahead.
I have a non-YA read I need to dive into this week as I’d like to include my review with my tour stop next week. So hopefully I’ll be able to carve out some time to do so. The book looks awesome and I really want to dive into it – yes there are fallen angels involved – and it will be nice to take a break from the YA world for just a bit.
I’m not feeling in the most ramble-y of moods at the moment as I really want to dive back into UNBREAKABLE. So for now I’ll just say happy reading! And if you’d like to share your reads for the week or even the books you’ve received, leave a comment – and perhaps a link – so that I can check them out!
Until next week….

Do you create a reading pile?
If so, what’s in your pile this week?

Thanks Alba! And it’s called Out in Blue by Sarah Gilman. I’m looking forward to reading that a bit later this week.
I hadn’t heard of Phoebe Pope but can’t wait to hear what YOU think!
And oh my gosh what did you get this week? I’ll have to check it out soon.
IT was actually a really surprising read… I even mentioned on my thoughts that I haven’t read a read as refreshing as that once since I read The Soul Screamers series
Which really… Is something…
I don’t know… I just felt the author really really wanted to make her story different.
IT worked for me

Again, I don’t know any of your books. EPIC FAIL!!! :/
I didn’t get any books in the mail, but I did go to our second hand bookstore and was stunned by what I found: Wildefire!!! I couldn’t believe it. Of course, I just had to get it, along with Shattered Souls and Dark Kiss.
The lady is always super nice, and she also never charges what it says. I got them all for 5 Bucks each. Happy, happy, happy!!!
As for reading, last week was slow, and still need to finish a book for a blog tour. After that, I’m hoping to read Demon Eyes and then Wildefire.
Change of plans: my next read is going to be Carnival of Souls!!! There is this really cool app where I can borrow ebooks from my library and I just got the email that it’s my turn for this one. Yay!!! Excited!!!
Wildefire on second hand bookstore! you are so lucky Ina. I just got my paperback copy of that from book depository recently, after a long wait of waiting because of the shipping. It was one of those books who I have to track down because I thought it was lost in the mail already. It took almost three months to finally received the book. *sigh* but at least I got it. I already started reading it from my kindle last year but sad to say I only read few pages before my kindle broke down
I planned to start reading it again as soon as I get a copy of the second book, hopefully before the released of the final book this year.
Rachel is the netgalley book Notes from Ghost Town a “read now”? That is how it shows up for me (and i can’t imagine that i would be auto-approved from Egmont – or at least I was never notified that i was). Someone else recommended this book to me as a great YA mystery. So i got it.
It is a “Read Now” book. Going forward I’ll make sure to specify in the post. I had opted not to “request” it as I hadn’t wanted to commit to a review in the next few weeks. If I buy it I can read it at my leisure.
And yay. It looks amazing. February is just a packed month for me.
I wish they listed all the “read it nows” in one place. At least if you request it you know you won’t be rejected!
Phew! At least I got most of those ARCs of yours on Edelweiss (thank the lords I’m auto-approved on edelweiss for harper). Mostly looking forward to The End Games.
When We Wake I’m currently halfway through. It’s a futuristic novel set in Melbourne (my city!) about a girl who was cryogenically frozen and comes back alive 70-100 years later or something to a changed society. (Though knowing how US publishers handle books set in Australia they might have changed the setting of it.)
And Nobody But Us was…. blaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah! it was DNF for me after 50 pages.
Enjoy all your amazing new books, lovely!
So jealous about goddess!!!!! I’ve been dying to read it since I finished dreamless!!!!
Soooo looking forward to E&E!!!! Weather Witch looks amazing as well!
Can anyone explain what edelweiss is. Do you have to be a blogger?
Awwww, I love all the titles you have! Sigh, lucky you! But I have some pretty awesome books right now!
I got Weather Witch, one of my most anticipated books for 2013. I LOVE IT. And Apollyon!!!! it’s MINE! Okay, I’m trying not to read it right now, but it’s hard to resist.
I have a couple of Italian books I was sent this week and they are both pretty good. And I hope I can find a job soon so I can buy the sequel to Touch of Power by Maria Snyder because I’ve just finished reading it and I LOVED it.
Oh my gosh. I’m not even jealous of this. It’s like I’m just contented staring at the picture, imagining them in my hands… lol, I’m probably not making much sense! XD But it was incredibly awesome of Jamie to do that! I hope you enjoy them all too! I’m also looking forward to When We Wake, since I read Karen Healey’s Guardian of the Dead. It was set in NZ, and it was pretty cool too! (And of course, I look forward to pretty much all of Harper Teen’s books.
)
And I also read Illuminate, but I didn’t really love LOVE It. It was kinda too long and a bit draggy for me. Shame too, with its gorgeous cover! But that’s just my opinion, and I’m glad you actually enjoyed it!
You got a lot of amazing titles!
I got a couple of them through Edelweiss and I’m really excited to read them! I really need to read Dreamless, I loved Starcrossed!
And I couldn’t help but request The Weather Witch as well, it sounds awesome, I hope you get approved!
