As you may know, I love author Jordan Dane’s writing and her stories. Not only are they unique for their content but for the voice she brings to her characters. They’re often outsiders, some with rather “prickly” personalities, but all of them are individuals and they’re characters I love getting to know.
So I am so excited about this new series of the author’s and I love getting the chance to be a part of the tour for this first book in this series, INDIGO AWAKENING, which I absolutely loved.
The whole concept of the Indigo children had me riveted. Their abilities were fascinating, strange, a little creepy even, but utterly intriguing. The idea that they were the evolutionary future of mankind had me excited to learn more. And the fact that they were being hunted by those who wanted to study them and those who wanted to stop them made this book even more of a must read for me.
I am so thrilled that I get to share this amazing guest post by the author which reveals just a little bit more about the Believers. The author also asks for your thoughts, which I’d love to hear about in the comments.
But before you start reading about that, you’ll definitely want to check out the description for the book. And if you’d like to learn a little more about the author, there’s a short bio and a few links to places where you can find her online.
As part of this tour, which is hosted by the lovely folks at Kismet Book Touring and brought to you by the always awesome Harlequin Teen, there is also a giveaway that is full of WIN. So be sure to check it out before you go!
About the Book
Book #1 in THE HUNTED series.
Because of what you are, the Believers will hunt you down.
Voices told Lucas Darby to run. Voices no one else can hear. He’s warned his sister not to look for him, but Rayne refuses to let her troubled brother vanish on the streets of LA. In her desperate search, she meets Gabriel Stewart, a runaway with mysterious powers and far too many secrets. Rayne can’t explain her crazy need to trust the strange yet compelling boy–to touch him–to protect him even though he scares her.
A fanatical church secretly hunts psychic kids–gifted “Indigo” teens feared to be the next evolution of mankind–for reasons only “the Believers” know. Now Rayne’s only hope is Gabe, who is haunted by an awakening power–a force darker than either of them imagine–that could doom them all.
They are our future–if they survive…
About the Author
Jordan Dane launched her back-to-back debut suspense novels in 2008 after the three books sold in auction. Ripped from the headlines, Jordan’s gritty plots weave a tapestry of vivid settings, intrigue and dark humor.
Publishers Weekly compared her intense pacing to Lisa Jackson, Lisa Gardner, and Tami Hoag—and named her debut book No One Heard Her Scream as Best Book of 2008.
INDIGO AWAKENING is the third YA novel written by Jordan Dane.
Who are the Believers?
The Church of Spiritual Freedom is a global religious organization that is pure fiction, created for the Hunted series. Although the next time someone with pamphlets comes knocking at your door, you never know who they really are.
For Indigo Awakening (book #1 of the Hunted series), I researched a number of existing organizations to find common ground, then threw out the conventional and contrived the strange ‘Believers’ faction that would be an extreme to any faith, people who believe they are “chosen” and are therefore “right,” at the expense of anyone else. Pretty scary.
Within the legitimate church there are fanatics who have taken their beliefs too far. They believe that mankind has been created in the image of God and has a duty to survive at the expense of all other creatures, if need be. So when the scientists among the faithful see growing evidence that Indigo/Crystal children might be evolving into a superior race of human beings, the most fervent Believers see this as a threat to humanity. They believe that Indigo kids are an abomination, a new plague for man to endure and survive. A test of the faithful. They create a covert organization of the most devoted followers who are willing to do whatever it takes to stop this threat. What’s their goal? Initially, they want to stop or control these children and to protect the human race from extinction, but when dealing with extremists, you never know where goals might lead. More will be known in book #2 – Crystal Storm.
In these kids, they find the perfect victims. These gifted psychic teens are vulnerable to being hunted in secret because they can’t report what is happening to them. If people across the world discover who and what they are, it would be far worse. That would put them in a spotlight they couldn’t survive. From experience and word of mouth on the street, these kids know that the Believers have a far reach with resources and money. They spare no expense to hunt them. They have cops, politicians, and others in power on their payroll. How do they hunt Indigos? The Believers have hacked into LA’s surveillance and traffic cams. They run their own facial recognition programs (from a private database) to hunt these kids on the sly, using paid mercenaries and people willing to be bought. Big brother is definitely watching. The central location for the Believers to “study” these children is Haven Hills Treatment Facility (the initial assessment hospital) where suspected Indigos are transferred to Ward 8 located in the basement—a one-way trip for any kid assigned there.
I wanted to create an out-of-control secret organization that operated without fear of being caught. Under the guise of religious fervor, they believe they are superior because God made them so, and they have more of a right to survive than these children, because they are the chosen.
I also found the idea of man’s evolution an interesting notion. Why wouldn’t mankind be at the mercy of evolution too? What would we evolve into? If you query ‘Indigo Child’ on the Internet, you’ll get over 8 million hits. These psychic kids have been featured on TV, in movies, and in countless books. Are they real? I don’t know, but the idea intrigued me. Some people believe that the next evolution of man is already walking among us and that they are highly intelligent, psychically gifted, and can see angels and the dead. Pretty cool.
In Indigo Awakening, I depict these teens as victims, until Gabriel Stewart comes out of hiding and commits to the fight. They’re uncovering their abilities and awakening powers that are frightening, but in Crystal Storm (book #2 in the Hunted series), their darker natures will emerge. Human nature, on both sides, will be tested.
If these kids really exist, and are superior to us, would they be a threat to our own existence—or are they our future, if they survive? What do you think? Is there a new breed of psychic Indigo child and could they be the next evolution?
Wow, I did Google “Indigo Child” and “Indigo Children” and there are a ton of sites and posts devoted to them. I can see why they were so intriguing to research and write about. Especially after reading about them on the Wikipedia page.
I can also totally see how there could be a religious organization devoted toward their capture and containment. Which makes this series even more chilling for its realism.
I cannot wait to read about their darker natures in CRYSTAL STORM and see just where things lead in book two and beyond. I loved getting to know Rayne, Gabe, Lucas, Kendra, Rafe and the rest of the characters… well, maybe not the Believers, O’Dell or Rayne’s sister Mia… but the “good guys.” And I’m excited to see how the story develops over the course of the series.
To add my two cents – in regards to your questions – I’m definitely of the mindset that change is inevitable and if our species were to evolve, these types of human beings could be the next iteration of mankind. We currently only use a fraction of our brains, so who knows what tapping into the rest of our gray matter could mean. There’s a lot we don’t know as human beings and to say that something isn’t possible is a little more close-minded than I’m willing to be at the moment.
Thank you so much for sharing a little bit more about the Believers, giving new readers the chance to learn more about the Indigo children and for revealing just a hint of what is to come in book two.
I cannot wait to read it!
